Hivemind.
« on: January 15, 2010, 09:09:50 am »
This is a short story, that depending on people's opinions will be extended. I haven't read all the stories on here so sorry if the concepts are similar to someone else's. It should stay as true to the game as I can keep it, and give some back story and added realism to the world of tremulous... not that it NEEDS it :P it's a great game without backstory.

Just an experiment :)

The overmind gained awareness. In the "alien room" of the Advanced Tactical Combat Simulator. The overmind was connected to other overminds in a hive mind collective consciousness, but was also an individual only part of the whole. It knew that it was being held captive, to train humans to fight the alien races. It had known pain, and many "deaths" of it's corporeal form. It would "die" again returning to the collective, eventually and a granger would re-form a body for it when the humans decided to train new recruits. It also knew that the humans could be killed in this place, and that they would nourish the creep, and the many "children" that were to be born. The children stirred in the overmind's "brain" wishing for bodies so they might act and feed, becoming more powerful.

A dretch was born. Expelled from the egg, it quickly realized it's consciousness, and began to feel the overmind touch it's new mind. Vaguely directed to defend the overmind, and the eggs the dretch was mostly left to act for itself, and feed itself.

A granger was busy tending creep nearby, forming acid tubes but the dretch took no notice.

Hunger drove the dretch to explore, it moved quickly out of the creep, towards the open center of the simulation area. It explored the walls, the floor, and the ceilings. It already knew the layout of the environment, and quickly, carefully probed the immediate area, knowing the danger that human weapons posed.

Sound alerted the dretch, it slid out of the line of sight, letting the human pass and then dropped down from the height, chasing silently, then leaping to the back of the human's neck, it bit. It then bit the back of the human's spine, ensuring death.

A series of sharp cracks, and rifle fire destroyed the dretch's body and it was forced to take a new body from the eggs back at the creep. But it had fed, and the human blood energized it, giving the small creature vitality even in it's new body.

The dretch touched the overmind, it received evolutional information that had been stored and modified over the centuries. It quickly restrucured it's own genetic code, forming the new tissues rapidly and became a basilisk. Exuding a pheromone that could cause rapid healing of wounds, it stalked away making a slight clicking sound as it walked back towards the entrance of the alien room to wait...

Its nice, but its also short (Like you mentioned.). The style of literature you depict reminds me of those old video game novels I read when I was younger (Which is a good thing.). Can we have moar?

A quick note: I've realized the need to have a sort of naming system for the aliens. I don't want to give them silly cheesy names like zerboid or anything like that so they will be known by the order they were "born" into ATCS. For example the alien that is the focus is called First. They have no gender (in this story) and will therefore be called it, instead of he/she.

The unsuspecting humans building their base sent out another scout group. It was fortunate that the humans wanted recruits to be trained "trial by fire" with no prior knowledge of alien tactics or forms. The sly alien dropped down, wrapping the human in it's embrace and clawing at it's back and neck. The human turned around rapidly, and caught a shotgun blast from his own teammate, ending his life abruptly. The basilisk, First, crawled up the center artificial mesa, avoiding getting it's own taste of buckshot by only inches.

Touching the overmind again, First went through subtle genetic shifts, and scuttled away to get used to it's new, more complex form. The humans would call it "marauder" and fear it's lightning quick movement. As the new marauder explored the smaller hallway, using it's springlike legs to bounce from wall to wall gathering speed, it happened across a human with a small boxy item, and stopped to watch as it projected a holographic form of a repeater. First waited around the corner, peeking out to watch the human. Curiosity was overwhelmed by instinct and rage when the next building threw some hot lead the marauder's way.

Bouncing down the hall, First came within striking distance of the small contraption. Biting at the exterior, it damaged the delicate targeting and rangefinding sensors on the surface. Realizing that these were the only breakable points the marauder focused on the many different sensor nodes, eventually blinding and causing the turret to freeze. The human had fled, and the marauder knew that it would come back. The marauder moved on to the repeater, destroying the sensors and power relay nodes on the outside. After a few seconds the self destruct on the machine gun turret caused it to explode, and the marauder was hurt by the bits of shrapnel, and returned to the creep to heal.

Meanwhile another dretch, Second, had made two more kills against unlucky humans. That dretch was an older consciousness and was much better at dodging and attacking, knowing how the humans would react. The marauder could feel it's triumphant emotions as it announced it's kills.

The overmind had been able to use the energy gained from these kills to advance its own structure and provide extra information to the aliens, and First having survived for a long enough period of time was granted some of this information from the overmind. It advanced itself once again, growing large, blue patches of static emitting glands around it's body. These glowing new glands would allow the more advanced marauder to "zap" things that were prey or attacker.

Bouncing down the walls First came to where the human had been building a repeater and saw that it was back, but with an escort. The blast of a shotgun nicked the marauder as it zapped the humans and the repeater that had just begun to teleport itself in. The zap disrupted the teleportation of the repeater and after a few very quick, well aimed bites the humans were dead as well. Only suffering a few light wounds First continued down the hallway until he could hear the hum of the human buildings and hear them.

I hope you like this newest addition to the story. I will most likely continue it in my spare time, as long as at least one other person still reads it :)
