Blocking
« on: January 17, 2010, 02:59:35 am »
1.2 has brought a number of new incentives for aliens to work together as a team. Healing Basi's, nerfed Tyrants, etc. Now the largest disadvantage to teamwork on the alien team is how everyone gets in the way of each other.  This causes a lot of frustration and anger amongst the team, clearly not a goal of the game. 2 dragoons is not always better than 1, and 3 get in each others way. Having a dretch around can break a pounce that would have killed a human. I think that the collision box for every alien should be reduced.  Preferably enough so that dretches can walk underneath dragoons and tyrants without worrying about getting in the way.  This would encourage mixed unit tactics and remove a lot of headaches caused by blocked escapes, pounces, or tramples.

Also, if it's possible, the original, larger, collision sizes should be used when a human tries to get past an alien, to represent trying to block them compared to trying to move aside for a team mate.

actually, more than half the aliens did get smaller bboxes, letting dretches walk under other aliens or having different collisions based on team isn't very feasible in the current engine though.

Ok let's plan it out. Asva, you are nub, go sit on rets, I will build, you two go feed like hell, you go pwn their asses, and everyone else camp in the hallway, roger?
the dretch bites.

^this.

The reason aliens are at a disadvantage now is that teamwork does not work as well for them as it does for humans. Humans are all the same size, they don't need to be point blank to do damage, and they have no movement-speed based attacks or abilities.

3 humans is always better than one, and 5 is always better than three.

Aliens do not currently have this advantage :(

FF does damage teamwork for humans like blocking does for aliens.

I wonder if the game can really be balanced with and without FF if all other settings are the same.

I'm thinkin' FF should be..

g_friendly_fire 0 = no ff whatsoever
g_friendly_fire 1 = building ff only
g_friendly_fire 2 = building and splash ff only
g_friendly_fire 3 = building, splash, and human ff only
g_friendly_fire 4 = all ff

Pretty self explanitory. g_friendly_fire 2 will make flamer, luci, grenade, and barb splas do damage. 3 will make all human weapons and barb splash do damage. i think 2 would be appropriate for the official servers and assist s2/s3 balance.

FF just needs to be on. If you're an alien who can't keep from chomping your teammate, you need to go work on your aim and reaction.

Balance testing with FF off?
Who other than newbie servers wants FF off anyway?

Humans should not be able to run around willy-nilly with a pulse, luci, or flamer... it makes it insanely hard to kill any humans near them, because they can just spray down their teammate with plasma and both will most likely walk away from it. How can this be seen as fair or balanced? Aliens can't provide this type of cover for their allies because they just block each other's movement. FF on. I may just start a poll for it. :/
