Visable Spectators?!?!?! :D

I thought it would be cool if people could see the spectator people floating in the air! Like something that wouldn't be game changing, like just a floating little camera that trails behind someone when you follow them, or floats and fly's when your free spectating. Or since some servers have noclip on for spectators, something partway-see through.
Interesting Idea?

your face

When it touches players, they get slimed, and can't move very fast.

Okay, that's taking it too far.

I think it should look a little like a probe. :-\

DraZiLoX

I think it should be only name floating.

Superpie

did this in 1.1 with the bubble particle system and some help from (I think) rezyn, the result was pretty annoying because of the bubbles themselves and the popping noise; spectators mostly thought it was either very nice or a violation of their privacy

if it could be done with something barely visible like a fly or single small bubble it'd be nice, so that specs wouldn't swarm around the most interesting player or try to annoy people

Something small, and not highly distracting, but still noticable sounds nice.

I like the idea, but how would speccing other players work?

Something like the probe/ghost is floating behind them. Then the player gets some kind of image in the HUD that shows there's someone spectating them... lol, I posted this last night, and look how many people agree!

But then you have the problem of people always aware they are being specced. Much like /serverstatus, this can be a bit irksome when checking people for bots.

Whats wrong with people being aware of being spectated? I think that would be cool... It shouldn't really matter as long as its not too big and bothersome. In fact it could just be something in the console, like
"Kingnickolas is spectating you"
or
"Yourface is spectating you"
lol.
Also, other team players spectating probably shouldn't be shown since it would be kinda bad to have so many ghosts/probes in one place. 0.0 Mabe not?

My point was in the case of spectators who DO NOT WANT... people to know that they are being spectated, for reasons like aimbot checks and the like. Skilled botters already know to use serverstatus to check if an admin is watching them, giving such a feature to everyone would simply make adminning more difficult.

...
"AdminMinion#N is spectating you"

and guess what the players going to turn off

serverstatus isnt perfect i think most qvm's now dont duplicate all the info i do think 1-2 items are still the same though

As far as I know, the latest version of lakitu's is, and I only frequent around 7-8 servers, 5 of which I know use lakitu's.

Kingnickolas

I'm thinking most of the people who spot wont notice they're being spectated and wont turn their bots off on time...
Besides that I have only this to say to people who use aimbot: GO GET A LIFE  :P
Anyway its just an idea... Still room for suggestions  ;D lol

I dunno, we are talking about the epitome of the tremulous community here, as are smart enough to ask if admins are on before playing, so they must know what they are doing.

UniqPhoeniX

If it can be immediately detected by client, then aimbots will be designed with an option to automatically disable while being specced.

Kingnickolas

So then the people don't know they are being specced?  :P
That sounds right I guess, they won't know they are being spectated with a little ghost floating around their head! lol . Also maybe the ghosts are the fallen teammates, and the little probes are the actual spectators.  ::)
And maybe this is taking it a little to far, but what if the fallen teammates could control the turrets/tubes and stuff. :D

If you do this you have to make it so that the spectator can at will, turn into a luciball (or other nefarious, fear instilling graphics), and chase people around, killing them on contact. Obviously this would be an admin only privilege.

Tell me when its done.

Kingnickolas

I'm not doing it. Its too complicated  :P

zybork

I am sympathetic to the idea, what about this:

• Free spectators are represented by small eyeball-avatars, this is: a simple white sphere with a dark spot on them indiciating the direction in which they look.
• If somebody gets spectated, those eyeballs change into a simple spike sticking out of the players back, so if somebody is really spikey, you know this guy is spectated by a lot of people.
• Spectator-avatars are only visible to a player if it is farther away or not inside/too near the crosshair to prevent obscuring the players sight.
• Players can opt to see spectators or not. Default should be to see them, of course.
• Maybe the eyeball-avatars could be semi-transparent, one important thing is that specs should NOT get in the way. It could be quite interesting to actually see spectators and it could add to the fun, it should not however diminish it.
I have retired from Tremulous. Definetely. If you play a game just because it has become a habit, but u'r only feeling like a kindergarten teacher - well, maybe I am just getting too old (hell, I was a teenager when DukeNukem3D was *new*) - it's probably not a bad idea to just let it be. And I do.

Don't take this personally. Have fun, guys.

swamp-cecil

I really like this idea. i think a little blur with a name if a player looks at them as if they where teamates. and if they are following you for 5 seconds, it will say in red at the top left "(playername) is following you". why 5 seconds? because you usually scroll throughplayers. and if they are following you, they are not noticeable. if this is considered thread hijacking, then i apologize.

He should make the specs be able to turn into nades and land into the human base as well whenever they want to. So they can cause basenades and general havoc at any point in the game.

Visibile specs is a nice idea, being able to tell if someone is speccing you is not though.

You could team up with a spec to distract other players.
