What are the Forum "Turrets" for?

I really hope I don't get flamed b/c this seems like a dumb question, but I was wondering what they actually stand for.

I see most people with more negative turrets than positive, and I recently have +2/-0, and I really don't know what that means to begin with. Could somebody please explain? Thank you.

Basically people who contribute things and are generally sensible posters have positive turrets.

People who spam and don't contribute much useful things, along with people who pissed off certain people have negative karma.

they are for nothing. just a funny 'lil tool that the forum creators put in to add some life 
basically, they are like karma, or kudos. when you add a turret, that means you like that person. when you take one away, it means you don't. but, knowing the trem community, things will be backwards..
