What's the best Tremulous client?
« on: August 14, 2010, 07:36:20 am »
What's the best Trem client? I don't just ask because I want to know - I also ask so that finally the search terms "best tremulous client" and "best trem client" do actually deliver a result in Google! Right now, they don't.

Since "best" is a question of perspective, let's split the question:

- Which client supports Trem 1.1 and 1.2 and all the mods best?
- Which client does have the most advanced graphics features?
- Which client works nicely with Windows 7?

All these questions only refer to the actual game, not the menu etc., because only the game really matters.

For the sake of completeness:

- Which client is most comfortable (server list features, etc.)?
- Which client has the best polish (main menu, server selection, etc.)?

..............................................

EDIT: Wow. Guess what: 24 hours later, searching for "best tremulous client" returns one hit - this thread! Google is awesome.

Btw, I used TJW backport until now, but I have a new machine, and the brightness settings don't work properly. But Tremfusion works nicely!

No client supports both 1.1 and 1.2 in the same binary, they use different protocol versions. Tremfusion has some really nice features for 1.1, as for 1.2, I don't know. Windows 7 shouldn't be an issue with any client.

Tremfusion, although it has quieted down... no tremulous thing can stay in active development for long... but its still serviceable, probably the best.

I'd say that it's best to stick with the official clients, and if you don't like the UI then just mod it (It's not particularly difficult anyway).

I use Tremfusion with win7, and works nicely.

Tremfusion, apart from this annoying thing when you alt-tab. Although, I had no problems with the normal client if you just want to keep things simple.

I used to use tjw. Then I tried Tremfusion, then went to MG, then back to tjw, and im back on MG again.
To be honest, I dont really see why any special client is necessary. I install volts and/or otics on all of them and other than tremfusions clear console, its pretty much the same stuff (for me anyway, dont need anything fancy).

TF + Oticz is what I use, but if the vanilla works for someone, let them use it. I'm trying Segfault out, and it looks awesome (the bloom is a bit weak, but at least it's there).

ok, can you give me the tool thingy app that can code?

Either MG or Tremfusion for 1.1, and then Segfault for 1.2 (its the only client other than default, and you don't need to use its features). However in general all you need is a client that supports qkeys, which is anything except for the default 1.1 client.

curl thing is really useful too, but I guess it's as common as backport now...

And, if you have proper glasses, some clients support 3D (stereo rendering, anaglyph mode), which is just amazing and doesn't really lag.

dont forget fsm-trem it has more features then mg and is alot more up to date but has less features then tremfusion

afaik 1.1 clients hasn't been updated by anyone for a long time but those 3 are your best bet for 1.1

I never really paid much attention to features though. Really the only things I knew about were messagemodes TFs clear console, and the black names being grey thingy. Other than that I didnt bother much. But I DID like fusions menu music :P
