The Maze
« on: August 30, 2010, 03:51:45 am »
This is my first map so it will appear boxy.  You must have the amp patch in order to play this map.  I'll make another version later that don't need the patch.  I'll also will not post screen shots due to it may give out the whole maze, sorry.  Let me know how it plays and if you like the background music.

Anyways here is the map:

Ok, I have quite a few things to say. Firstly, more information in your post please, and at least 1 screenshot.
General;
- Where's the ReadMe, Arena file and Level Shot? :(
- Background music does not work. (Though it may work in 1.2, did they add .ogg support? I forgot :P)
- You need to package the textures you've used with the map. (I didn't have the '1984/26' texture)
-- I notice you've used my ammo texture from Hard Landing, which I don't mind at all though I did make a nice shader for it that you could have used and it also should have been packaged in the pk3. (It'll only show for people who have Hard Landing in their base folder)
-- Also note; I don't really care but, technically you should give credit.
- You don't need to package the '.bak', '.srf', '.prt'. (I think they're just used during the compile.)
- Even if it is a maze there should be more texture variance and more detail.
Source File ('.map') related;
- You need to caulk ALL unseen faces.
- The trigger_ammo should be textured with 'Common/Trigger'.
- You should have followed the larger grid lines as so to keep the width of corridors consistent.
- [See attachment.]
Gameplay;
- More spawns in the bases.
- As things are the bases can't really be taken down can they? (Unless you want TDM in the map)

Personally I don't think this is going to be that fun to play, when other people have done mazes they've added special triggers and such making it more interesting. (One such maze had its layout change periodically)

Unimportant but, I was hoping from some epic triggers and such. :'( Your use of the AMP was very basic.

That's all I can think of for the time being.

well like i said it is only my first map.  I kinda forgot about the textures part and relized it after i shut down.  and yes i know that the maze has next to nothing to it but in next release i'll make it more appealing.  well back to work. :P

a couple questions:
did you get lost in the maze? :)

and

how do i make an arena file? ???

Lost? Nope, I seem to have luck on my side I found the entrance to the alien base pretty quick. :D

As for the .arena, just a make text document in notepad/word pad and put the following in it;
Code: [Select]
{
  map       "Mazeamp"
  longname  "Maze by Chomps123"
  type      "tremulous"
}
[Map; use the same name as the bsp (without .bsp on the end), Longname will be displayed in the map list and when loading the map (Unless a name has been specified in the map it self)]
Then just save it as 'Mazeamp.arena', put it in the scripts folder and put it in the pk3.

Well it's not like I didn't run into a few dead ends, but looking at the layout in the .map it could be more difficult to navigate (Especially if you had it alternating with timed doors). Also you may want to include a central area or something. Oh and you could come up with a more interesting name; Perhaps "Disorientation" or something along those lines.

Indeed. That was what I was thinking. (Heh, we should probably be using live chat or something for this :P)

My first opinion when I quick-checked this map:
You got to be kidding me.
-warning: offtopic-(Reminds me of other game, it was Stupid Invaders, where you need to get past of huge maze. Lot worse than this, I assure you.)

A bland map, especially from textures, and adds more navigational hazardness. Give some color stripes or pillars to regocnize area.
And central fighting area is bit too much open. More crates to add some fun.
And when I wallwalked on walls, I noticed that I had flying dretch on sky... Not really flying, but I can wallwalk on open sky. I don't currently remember shader that disables wallwalking now. (But my points to someone who remembers offhand.)

These are my real opinions from this map. Needs to be played, if I could give my exact analyzis of this map.

It's common/slick, but it also works like ice when placed on the floor.

I agree with CorSairs criticism. And, speaking of the sky, it should be possible to get up higher. Every goon will thank you.

I'll see what i can do about that. Also thanks for that little bit of info with the slick part, I've been wondering if it might work but i wasn't sure.

I recommend it to be a little bit brighter in some areas because in some areas you can't see a thing. Also I think it would be nicer if some doors were more accessible. Otherwise the maze idea is pretty nice. If you want a real challenge you should try adding multiple levels.
