Why so slow?
« on: September 02, 2010, 05:37:09 am »
Why is tremulous so slow compared to other open source fps's. Cube 2 runs insanely well and has awesome water, Nexuiz has amazing effects as well.. Why does tremulous have such low graphics in comparison?

So are you accusing it of having bad graphics, or of running slowly?
Because in my experience it runs quite quickly on any post-2006 mainstream hardware.
I run it at 120FPS wisescreen with Max'd AA on 2008 hardware.

yeah same, I can get higher on more graphics intensive games, I am accusing it of being slow for its graphics quality. I run 62 Fps max settings on a core 2 quad q8200 4 gigs ram and a gts 250 512MB

Because the engine's a decade old? Anyway, I can pull over 400FPS (and successfully not move anywhere due to lag) on a 9800GTX+, so your system has serious issues.

The Quake 3 engine which Tremulous runs on has some issues that don't go away with more processing power. The limitations of yesterday(or hell, last week for that matter) are still abound.

Hmmmm, I can geet 90 most of the time but I keep it at 60 because I dont need 90. I wonder why some people can get such high framrates

Getting ultra-high FPS values is useless anyway, as your display will probably show no more than 60 (LCD) or up to 90 (CRT) frames per second.

Double the frame rate of a monitor is much smoother, in my experience.

aelita: what processor do u have?

I'm currently using an Athlon X2 3600. Much older than yours. My prior rig had a Phenom II quadcore in it, and I had similar performance. Trem is simply limited by the design of the engine.

And no, I'm not an AMD fangirl, I just prefer to use them because they're rather cheap compared to Intel. I use only Intel parts for my servers (and my laptop).

Cauz dev prefer add ingame teamspeak (instead of our mumble/ts), change game balance instead of game extension, and say 'nah' instead of upgrading outdated trem engine.

From what I've heard some physics is based on your framerate. That means you'll be able to jump higher for instance if your framerate is higher. Also there is a tangible smoothness increase every 30fps you go up (till you're over 200 or so, I imagine.)

That's dependent on how frequently the game updates. There was a bug in some Q3 games due to game updates being done each time a new frame was drawn, so players with faster machines could move or fire quicker, etc.

Wow. I have a Pent. 4 and I get about 200. (com_maxfps at 333 of course)
That fps is not because of your processor.

OP: something is definitely wrong, you should be getting much higher fps.
Anyone who wants to take advantage of the fps dependent physics: you might want to limit your fps at either 76/125/333, just make sure your computer can actually achieve that fps constantly.

On my linux box once I got Trem from the Synaptic and it runs quite well on 60-75 fps. Now I downloaded the official installer to try the new 1.2 and it runs only on 10-15 fps. I think something went wrong. Both 1.1 and 1.2 runs too slow now :(

The smoothness stops increasing once you reach double your monitor's refresh rate, in my theory. At least, I haven't noticed. Say your refresh rate is 80hz(CRT). Based on this theory, 160FPS is your best maximum(unless you want to 'cheat' with physics bugs). At 60hz, 120FPS is your best maximum(and is also a physics magic number(whoops, I've said too much)).

Actually it very much can be, as nearly 90% of ioQuake3's renderer is software. There are very few GL functions called in the code(Carmack commented on the quality of drivers being the main reason back in 1999).

For some reason Trem used to play on 90-120 fps. for some reason, now the fps has dropped to 60 maximum. Smooth playin tho, but still - higher fps = better.

You probably tweaked something in 1.1 and your 1.2 config doesn't have it(yes, GPP keeps a separate autogen.cfg).
