Server Stats
« on: July 29, 2006, 04:58:16 pm »
I am thinking of setting up a tremulous server and hopefully creating a complimentary site. However I have never done something like this before and I want to know if it is possible to have server stats on the site, and how to do this?

I am hoping this server will gain some gathering and that it can be used to boost tremulous player numbers.

yea my old game 'black hawk down' many servers were running server stats were the game recorded ur total kills, deaths and kills with different weapons, which was then sent to the site for viewing.
as for tremulous im gessing it would have like kills with dragoon, kills with flamer, tyrant useage etc etc.

You really think its a good idea to do this?

In tremulous indidivual kills etc are utterly meaningless. Its all about tactics and base destruction. Stats like this are the sort of thing that encourage camping as people desperately try and get the most kills and least deaths, despite the fact that this wont nessessarily help the game......

You have a bit of a point... but isn't that what the score screen does?.. show kills?

Might be neat if there was a points system.. you get points for killing etc.. but you get points for building (and those points go up as the structure survives), you get points for repairing, you get more points the closer you are to the enemy base when you kill something.. etc... points system.. simple.

was suggested, search for "rating system" on the forums, was declared

NOT DOABLE

due to too many variables in a game

Could you maybe link in the future.. I still hold that the search is a lot of crap. And since you might remember the title, finding it might be easier for you, and i'd be interested in reading it.

I guess you must be L33T at searching then because even with the title i couldn't find it in the first 7 pages using "rating system", or "point system"....

Thank you for finding that for me though.

There are differences in what I was saying and what they were saying. I still think points is a good idea based on criterea similar to what I said and I do not think it is too complicated etc. You can say "how long a building survives isn't a measure of a good builder" but you can also say that about kills.. i'm not saying replace kills, i'm saying having a points system is still more representative than kills, and will give more credit where its due..
I've seen this work in some games, a lot of them will give points to builders, even if its only a mod.
Proximity of kills to base encourages players to leave their base etc...
Killing enemies while in a group away from your base maybe could give you a teamwork point. Maybe negative points for feeding.. etc..
But i'm not going to hijack this guys thread.. I do think its a good idea though.

Very good point. I hadn't thought about this but I am confident that with after a little time I can make it work.

Thanks for all the replies I'll make sure to post here if this gets off the ground. I need to run a few tests first and sort out a dedicated server. If it works out I would hope to have something going within a month.
