so, since i didnt have my good computer today, i booted up my old one and practiced GTKradiant.
The hardest thing to put in a map is detail, so i practiced that. I made a, in my opinion detailed hallway. Tell me what you think, with feedback:
--Map file in post bellow due to maximum characters exceeded--
these are stupid suggestions, don't even waste our time.

It's alright. But you could make it bigger, make those side things with brushes, but patches, and use diffrent textures.

Very nice. Detailing is really one of the hardest things about mapping, but this piece is a huge improvement compared to your earlier work. A map with this level of detail wouldn't look bad I think.

Just some errors you made (not necessarily design-wise):
  • There is some caulk left at the top of those "rafters" (see attachment)
  • Some of the changes between the textures are quite obyious, expecuially at the walls. You should try to hide them somehow
  • There are no lamps in this one. Lamps can often be used as details quite well.
  • I don't know if this was intentional because the part was only made to show the detail, but you might want to clip some areas and set some of the brsuhes to detail

As for the light: I usually build the detail first too, and then look if I could use some of the detail for lights. In this case you could for example put light-shaders on the bottom of the rafters I mentioned before. (Nexus has some nice light-shaders in many sizes)

As for 4.: In case you don't know what details and clips are:
Clips are invisible brushes, that block movement. They are used to smooth rough surfaces and ease movement. In tremulous, this is especially important for wallwalking aliens.
I can't really explain detail brushes (I generally suck at explaining), but this might help you: http://tremmapping.pbworks.com/w/page/22453200/Starting-Tremulous-Mapping#DecorationDetailing

I also made an example on what you could do with the piece you made:
I added some wires at the ceiling, the part missing on the wall is now lying on the floor and I tried to hide the texture-changes on the walls. I also added some lights (not the ones I suggested before). I furthermore made the patches on the wall to brushes (although this is not necessary), added some clips and set the decoration to detail.
