I accidentally Crysis 2
« on: February 12, 2011, 06:10:40 am »

whoops.
hey, anybody recognize that UI font?

edit:
for anyone that didn't know, some dick stole the Crysis 2 beta from Crytek servers and leaked the shit out of it to the internets. this is why we PC gamers can't have nice things... and it's for reasons like this why Crytek actually developed this game for consoles, THEN ported it to PC.

fyi, I didn't pirate it, above screenshot is from a Facepunch thread from someone who did. My preorder still stands and I intend to get the day it's supposed to come out.

I'm fairly sure it has a lot more to do with lots of built-in copy protection on consoles and a system of pre-paid points making it easier to extort money out of the kind of simpletons who use consoles, for scraps of additional content. Leaky dicks have little to do with it.

yes, since using a console makes you a simpleton. over-generalizations, however, apparently do not
if you don't like the DLC, don't buy it, but Crytek deserves to be paid for the thousands and thousands of man-hours they've spent developing the Crysis series by those who play the games. piracy is the main reason PC gamers don't get more attention, this leak is just piss them off more

no one is very upset about this, but fortunately it's still the beta says no one. Still, kills the mood and excitement of the release day says no one.

It's a bit of a shame that Crytek didn't, you know, not fuck up and leak the sodding thing in the first place... It's also a shame that you and various gaming news sites didn't avoid reporting the fact that it has been leaked.

Sweeping generalisations are always great, no question of that. The point is that console owners tend to be younger, more inclined to want shiny things _now_, have less control over their platform, can't possibly obtain the content without paying(well, maybe on the ps3 now), and so are far more valuable customers than their PC owning counterparts. I'm sure piracy's a big issue, but come on, isn't piracy the only way to actually play a game without hassle thesedays? Reports suggest that this crysis leak can be unpacked and just run, i'm not going to pretend that i know what kind of copy protection EA insists on for their games but it sounds like this leaked playtest could be a much more consumer friendly package than the end product ever could be.

I could have sworn that no one told me ingame that the leak was just a hoax.

Do they really develop for consoles first? that seems odd, surely it makes sense to develop for the platform on which you do your development work, then make the ports, regardless of whether you then release for said platform.

no one says there was a major hoax "release" after the xbox 360 aired a multilayer demo. no one didn't know about this release until no one came across it in  this forum. However, as no one has no intention of trying it; no one does not know if this is real or not (no one doesn't even have an xbox  :P).

crysis 2 sucks.
1) replace nice Korean-filled jungle with a concrete one
2) remove all elements remotely related to the previous plot except for the nanosuit
3) slap pc gamers in the face
4) ???
5) profit

I'm sure you meant to say, "as awesome as the first one".
No, I'm afraid it can't be.

I played through both original crysis games on full gfx settings and didn't find any of the "errors" that you speak of.  If your computer sucks too much to play it, who's fault is that?  You can't expect to play the best looking game to date on the same, 10-yo pc that you play WoW on.  Awesome games for people with awesome computers.  (I am not one of those with an awesome computer. :( )
Dun hate on the ferarri just because you have a honda civic.

@PB: More? Hah.  If they had to dumb it down for console ports, it can't be as resource hungry and awesome.

Ah but you see... I LOVED CRYSIS/WARHEAD! i too played through both games on high resolution and max settings possible countless times and the CryEngine 2 is far from perfect, numerous errors and glitches here and there, to the unobservant eye they would go unnoticed ::) but my ability to spot these things stems form a deep seated OCD and perfectionism...
Also my pc is a custom build enthusiast level rig which i have wasted far too much money on... i would consider it more of a Maserati =)

I'm not sure if you don't expect people to read your links or what, but that story mentions nothing of royalties at all. It says only that Halo 3 accrued 300 million in sales the first week, a fair amount of which goes to retailers first of all, and the rest does not just go to the developer, that isn't how companies work. Unless by game developer you just mean the company as a whole, (just thought of that possibility) in which case, what the fuck are you talking about "extortionists" for making a game that sells well? Those ideas have nothing to do with each other, and seeing as Halo sold for the average market cost, the idea makes even less sense.

Um, dude you do realize you are on the tremulous.net forums don't you? We practically specilize in not paying people for their intellectual property.

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...

Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the "Armoury". The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.

The overall objective behind Tremulous is to eliminate the opposing team. This is achieved by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying their spawn structures.

Now why don't you take a flying fuck at the moon.

That is complete bullshit. PC games tend to look 100x better then console games. The reason that the average console user could (I haven't actually looked into that fact) be younger is that consoles are cheaper, not because of ZOMGSHINEYBITZ because that's more a PC thing. Look at the first Crysis; Most people bought/downloaded it just to drool at the graphics.

I can read this slow, fast, rapping, singing, out loud, whispering or however you want it and it doesn't change a thing.
The part where you say they are more inclined to want shiny things _now_ only counts for a new console release, like the X360 back in 2005. It was cheaper than a PC with similar specifications, so it was quite a deal for people who wanted shiny things.

Also, it's quite easy to hack a 360 to allow copied games to be played on it. The same counts for the Wii.

One of the more important reasons, apart from piracy rates as the PC-owners tend to pirate a lot more, that consoles are more interesting for developers is because there are very few differences between for example, X360's. If it runs on one, it will most likely run on all the others as well. Developing a game for the PC means you have to deal with thousands of different combinations of hardware, meaning a LOT of testing on countless of different systems and even then it might not work on all systems.

The only things I do agree with you is that console owners are more valuable and that the average console owner tends to be younger because of the price and ease of use.

So how do we explain the following if it changes nothing?
The only things I do agree with you is that console owners are more valuable and that the average console owner tends to be younger because of the price and ease of use.
Thankyou for taking the time to re-read, it obviously did help you to grasp the point i was trying to make, of course it didn't stop you making irrelevant arguments for the sake of it, but that was to be expected.

And don't let me hear you bad mouthing developers! Those guys put the effort in and I love them for what they do. Hate the publishers that pay them. It's there where things are either done right (Valve) or done oh so terribly wrong (pretty much everyone else).

Soooo, moving away from console hate for a while, how many of you have tried the Crysis2 MP demo? Am i alone in feeling that it's generic man-shooty crap with ludicrously over the top special effects? Aren't those suits supposed to offer some protection, if i wanted to die after a handful of hits with no time to retaliate, i'd play UrT or the like. What's this whole XP points thing about, is it not enough that experienced players have the advantage of experience without them also having access to upgrades, poor newbies.
I must admit it's a very pretty, i might even go so far as to say stunning, game, it's just not much fun.

The nanosuit isn't built to soak up bullets.  It's built as a cloak and dagger weapon.  If you are outnumbered, you don't want to run in guns blazing, but instead try to figure out alternative methods of getting the job done using cloak, strength, or speed (or combine them all if you're hardcore).  That's part of the strategy while wearing the nanosuit.  If you play Crysis as if it's a generic man-shooty crap, then it will be just that.

I'm just basing this off of Crysis 1 knowledge; Crysis 2 could be totally different.  But one thing I really enjoyed about the original Crysis were the sandbox methods of completing missions.  Choose to complete it stealth, muscle or both. :D

Patriotpie, let me tell you a story:

Once upon a time in a land far far away there was a building. A really tall building. A building so tall it scraped the sky. It was the only 'skyscraper' around in a rather large but flat city. As a result the clouds themselves burst on its roof. Some folk living in the skyscraper tasted the fluid trickling and dripping off the walls. They REALLY LIKED IT!!!11one of the them goes

"HAI GUYS,
1. COLLECT WATER
2. ? ? ?
3. PROFIT"

So they set about funnelling, channeling and generally directing the water and before long were making quite a profit from the city's people, anxious to taste the sweet sweet sweet water.

But then city people started to realise where the water was coming from. "Why should we pay for something you can make from thin air?" said the city people. The building folk knew what to say. "Our building cost money and effort and without it the water is nothing but vapour, you need us". It was true. They did need them. The city people were never going to be able to make a building that high.

Yet the water comes from the air itself, and air doesn't discriminate. Water started condensing on the outside of the funnels and channels.

While standing in-line for a fresh steaming bottle of 'VAPOURWAREZ BRAND BOTTLED WATER' young little timmy from down the road was startled when he saw some water dripping off the OUTSIDE of the collection equipment way up high. He had an idea. He donned his hat (which was cutely adorned with some human bones and a skull) and walked over to beneath where the equipment was dampest.

"OMFG" said timmy. "I HAS WATRE, IT'S IN MAH HAT SOAKIN ALL MY HED"

Anyway, lots of time passes and lots of funnel installations later the water's still forming on the outside of the bloody equipment and people decide to just drink water collected in thier ridiculous hats from the massive waterfalls that the building folk just can't blooming control.

You see what I did there?

WELL THEN SUM GUY INVENTS THE VALVE AND THEN SUDDENLY WATER BECOMES SO EASY TO CONTROL AND THEN PEOPLE BUY IT AND THEN THERE WERE LOLS.
