Tremulous Helper App for iP*d and Other Mobile Devices
« on: February 28, 2011, 03:31:33 pm »
In response to FirstInAction's idea about a 'Tremulous App', I wanted to point out that he is not necessarily suggesting that you try to play Trem on a mobile device or even talking about porting Trem to a smart phone..

The gist of the topic, and I really think there could be something cool from this, is to have a helper or enhancement application for Tremulous.

What does that mean?

Well, any info that you can gather externally from the game server can be displayed on your phone. You can also admin Trem servers remotely, so why not from your phone? I think it would be great to have features like these:

Server Browser - Show info about available Trem servers.
Admin Menu - Easily adjust the server's settings.
Scoreboard Viewer - Shows who's on the server, their scores, and pings.
Stats Display - Shows your stats for the round (last round?).
Game Chat - Team chats and one-touch team based commmands.
Class & Equipment Viewer - Shows info about each player class and weapon types, etc.

The are just some ideas of the top of my head, actual feasibility may vary. However, I don't belive any of them to be unreasonable, and I think they could add a lot to the whole game play experience.

TL;DR: What would YOU like to see in an a game helper app for mobile devices?

Why would anyone care about the vast majority of that info unless they're actually in a position to play, besides, what's wrong with a web browser and either master.tremulous.net or a gametracker listing bookmarked? Not that i've got anything against you coding this up if you feel the need, it just seems like a bit of a waste of time.

The ideas I listed are primarily intended for gamers who are in a position to play, ie, playing on their pc, and also have a mobile device nearby.
I ask in return, what additional info do you care about when you are playing?

It's not possible practical Alt-Tab Ugh I hate my OS easy to play fullscreen and browse the web at the same time on the same computer without multiple displays (without leaving the game), so an app is perfect- if not just a web site with some of these features and a decent interface for webkit based browsers.

I'm just asking for new ideas, not asking for your opinions on my ideas thus far. No need to run the 'code it yourself' thing by me, I know, and I don't even own a cool phone. Please save your analysis for later.

Feel free to save your ideasplurge for later, when you're ready to have it, you know, posted on a public forum and discussed, ok?

Sorry, it's just a really annoying trend to see good ideas get shot down by 'code it yourself' without any consideration for the idea presented.

Ideasplurge, aka brainstorming, ie, using the creative parts of your brain, is impeded by the analytical thought process. That's why I asked people to submit their own ideas, not criticize mine. Also, -turrets, really? Lol.

Ok, can we have a new subforum entitled "Brainfarts from sensitive flowers, no analysis allowed", so that i know not to contribute my thoughts on the subjects in question?

Nobody likes me and my mother dresses me funny, but bad ideasplooge in off-topic is par for the course. Keeping in mind that the whole app thing wasn't my idea, and I don't own an cool phone, just... wahtever. Every idea is a bad idea until it's done (and the inverse is true), so I thought someone else might come up with a more useful set of features.

But seriously, I don't give a shit about Apple products.
