Sometimes, while I am in a match, I realize how much the smell of the map has to do with how much I like it.
For instance, Karith station is quite cool, the air is fresh, especially outside, while in Nexus it is a bit warmer, and in some areas, you can really smell the oil of the door-mechanisms. Uncreation I am glad they took out of the standard maps, because those damn sparks made the air always smell like Christmas-sparklers, which added to the fact it was a useless map overall, I am glad they use other flares in Nano, Nano is okay in that respect.
The air in Tremor – a map I really like otherwise – is stale, a li'l dump in my opinion underground, a fact I only notice when I play alien tough, because the bugs have better senses. Also, the air in Transit is stale, I am also glad it is no longer in standard rotation. A big map, huge rooms, but no wind at all.
For some reason, the air in Arachnid has an organic smell to it, I really wonder what flows through all those pipes and if they might leak a bit here and there, but still, ATCS smells best, it smells like Sand, metal plating, and in my opinion a bit like gunpoweder residue – a smell that reminds me to good old Quake2, and no matter how overplayed this map is, I still like it for that factor of nostalgia.
