Problem with Launching Tremulous
« on: May 25, 2011, 01:04:51 am »
hello, all
I recently found tremulous, and I love it :) But I have a problem :( when I launch tremulous, a blank screen comes up. Then the monitor displays "Monitor Shutting Down" The sound is running well, so I think it's something with the graphics or the graphics card. But anyway, if anyone has had this problem/knows how to fix it, please respond; I really want to play.

BTW- I have a 1.8 GHZ Hp Pavilion zv6000 running Linux 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.x86_64 x86_64 and I have the laptop attached to a Mag Innovison 770FS monitor because the hinges broke.

ALSO- My dad said something about the graphics of this computer were unusually old...

Well, if it can run on an HP Pavilion ze2315us (running Windows 7) it should be able to run on that. Could you give specifics on the model of the graphics card and the error message that it gives? If it doesn't give one, try running tremulous in the terminal.

EDIT: Looked it up, the ze2315us and the zv6000 have the same graphics card.

Have you recently changed the resolution in trem? A more common issue is the old opengl subsystem failed error, but if your computer doesn't realise that the chosen screen mode isn't supported it'll start up and just fail to display, rather than crashing.

Try starting trem from a terminal with tremulous +set r_mode 4

Okay, so I ran it in the terminal, and what seems to happen is the monitor just shuts off. So I can't get the terminal message, but it seems to run fine, i can hear the music and everything.

okay, so running it as tremulous +set r_mode 4 doesn't work, I don't think i've ever changed the resolution...

Ok, thanks for checking, have you changed anything about the system/tremulous since it last worked correctly? This hasn't started since you attached the external monitor or anything?

Do other fullscreen games run ok? Do other opengl/directx games run ok?

If problems persist you might try editing a file called "autogen.cfg" and adding the line "seta logfile 2" to it. This should create a file called q3console.log, which I believe will be located in C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Tremulous. Run tremulous, close it, and then post the contents of that file. If its a video card problem hopefully we'll see an openGL error there.

Yes, when tremulous worked awhile back, i had a older version of Fedora & and no external monitor. I think the problem began when the external monitor was attached, because as far as i remember, before that Tremulous seemed to work fine. (it definitely never shut down the monitor) But then after the monitor was attached, I think the problem then began.

actually, I think fullscreen games don't work to well... I mean when I launch a fullscreen game, about half the time it crashes :/

Hrm, that is a problem then, and unfortunately tremulous likely isn't going to shed any light on it (ignore what I said about the logfile). Unfortunately I don't really have a clue how that could be solved. Hopefully someone else (or google) will have some insights into this.

Wild guess: what video modes does the video card/monitor support according to windows 7?

Aha! I think I know the issue.  The monitor isn't configured as the default screen for fullscreen apps because you had a working screen beforehand.  You may need to change this in your monitors preferences.  It seems to make sense.  Not entirely sure though.
