Official Server Hijacking
« on: August 03, 2011, 08:46:16 am »
Today was fun, some people decided to have a granger vs blaster fight on US1 Official server, that's all very good and fun, BUT admins 'Dspro|Uzi' and 'OnionOfDoom' decided to use their admin powers to kick or put onto spectators any other players who would like to just play normally. This is what is called a server hijacking, this is against the rules and these admins should clearly know this.

Is this the sort of official server you are running?
Where your admins use their administrative capabilities to hijack the server.

No one is ever going to take this game seriously while you continue to let players like this administrate your OFFICIAL servers.

Correction: After you kicked me for calling my brother 'Minimoose' a 'nigger'(one of the many slanderous terms we throw back and forth to each other all the time). He (my brother) changed HIS name to that showing his disapproval of your action. I never called you or any one else anything.

Before this thread descends into a pile of insults like I'm pretty sure it will, I'd just like to point out that something close to a false dichotomy is being created here. That is, it's not "accept Anonymoose as correct" vs. "accept ZebraHunter as correct" here. While I was not on the server and this is the first time I've heard about the 'server hijacking', the fact that Anonymoose may have been breaking server rules himself does not get rid of the first issue. He may have been an idiot (and judging by his "defense," well...) but that doesn't take away from the issue. Of course, him doing whatever he may have done (avoiding, the fact that he called someone nigger a good defense in his mind, etc) is also an issue which I'm sure will be debated too, and probably should be, I just happen to know the internet, and this forum in particular, and character analysis gets in the way of other issues (often intentionally) in the real life too. So yeah, Anonymoose may be a twat, server may also have been hijacked.

Now for people more informed... discuss. (Civilly ???)

You banned him for the name.
And if you had even bothered to check you would know that it is indeed 2 different ip's from 2 different locations from 2 different ISP's used by 2 different people.

It had nothing to do with me.

You uzi just clearly have a problem with me, and you often use and abuse your administrative privileges to support your personal vendetta against me.

I happened to be on the server at the time. You were votekicked for teamkilling.

Repeated offenses met with repeated punishments does not constitute a personal vendetta. If anything, it represents a responsible administration.

Yes, you did try votekick me because I wouldn't play to your hijacked standards, but that vote failed because I was not doing anything wrong, merely playing normally.
I was actually kicked by 'Uzi' for reason: ".", as were other people during your server hijacking, I will admit I did teamkill someone who was bleeding me to death because I was playing normally and not to the newly hijacked servers 'rules'.

Repeated offenses? responsible administration?! That is a laugh, Im not one to break rules and I cannot recall any other admin needing to use their capabilities on me.

Here's what happened: Everyone decided to do _one_ game of granger vs. blaster, just for fun.  No one objected, everyone was like "lol yeah let's do it".  However, Yardsale was the sole defector - he became rifle and just started rifling all the grangers.

Everyone told him "Dude, be blaster for this round!"  He ignored everyone.  So I /putteamed him spec just to give him a hint.  All in good fun.  He repeatedly rejoined, rifled some the grangers (again, just him - everyone else was blaster vs granger at this point), and then I'd /putteam him to give him the hint.

That happened maybe 4 times.  That's the extent of what I did.

(and later, other people like Anonymoose joined & were non-blaster/granger as well.  And by that point I'd stopped using /putteam powers.  Originally, when there was just the one person (yardsale) slaughtering poor merciless grangers/blasters, it seemed like an unfair bloodbath.  But when there were multiple, it became a bit more balanced and wasn't worth trying to enforce anything.)

I was actually kicked by 'Uzi' for reason: ".", as were other people during your server hijacking

"as were other people" is not true there.  Yardsale was /callvote kicked (not by me, and I forget what for), and IIRC no other kicks of any sort took place.

This is probably the last I'm posting on this; I have no interest in getting into a flamewar over something as frivolous as this.

Actually there was no callvote, he was kicked by uzi for nothing more than playing the game, again with the very valid reason of: "."
And there were more on top of that who were booted onto spectators for again merely playing the game.

I'd have to say that Uzi is probably one of the worst admins on US1.
There are many times he over-zealously uses his admin when it isn't necessary.
Also, he PM's Dracone "be nice" whenever he attempts to use his admin properly (lol).
You aren't shit, kid. Get good and maybe people will respect you.

As an admin, your responsibility is to ensure that stupidity like that doesn't happen.
Who cares if yardsales (I'm guessing this is Moose) went rifle when you guys were circlejerking?
You shouldn't impose an arbitrary game of "blasters v. grangers" on a n "official" server, even if 99% of the population wants it. There is bound to be somebody who doesn't want to engage in your idiocy, so you should respect that.

It's times like these I wish superpie was still around; he cleans up the bullshit that seems to stain the administration of US1 from time to time.

Worth noting: The previous game had a changemap vote called at the beginning, so they could pull this idiocy on ATCS. The results? Six to five. Almost a majority of the people who voted wanted to just play a normal round on Niveus instead.
So what's this about only one person "defecting"?

You're completely misconstruing what I said.

What I said was: for the first chunk of the game in question, _everyone_ was being blaster or granger (and nobody voiced any "guys this is lame"-type concerns of any sort), and there was just the one guy running around slaughtering everyone.  That was the sense in which I used the term "defector".

Also: can we quit it with the overblown language? e.g. "hijack" / "pull this idiocy".

You could have, at the very least, noted that five people, out of a sample of eleven, said "no" in a less direct way. If almost half the sample polled disagrees, there's clearly some degree of discontent. I wouldn't have been the least bit surprised that someone wanted to have a normal game, after saying just that through their vote.
I agree though, "hijack" clearly isn't accurate enough, since it implies violence. What would you prefer, "takeover"? "WTF moment"? "Spontaneous granger break"?

I'd have to say that Uzi is probably one of the worst admins on US1.
There are many times he over-zealously uses his admin when it isn't necessary.
QFT.
He'll probably keep his admin on the "official" server because the devs don't seem to care about the abusing, and lack of common sense that this guy and many other admins have. Who would give a guy like Uzi admin? He was a shit player nobody cared about in 1.1, and he's a shit player that people only care about when he abuses his admin in 1.2/GPP. There are many severs where you can do this stupid shit.
Also: can we quit it with the overblown language? e.g. "hijack" / "pull this idiocy".

Idiocy- : something notably stupid or foolish (granger v.s. blaster on an "official" server)
hijack- To seize control of by use of force. (Using your admin to putteam people because they won't partake in your stupid meaningless game of grang4 blast4 warZ.

Hi, I was one of the players that was being abused in this instance. I usually don't like to complain, and a cool-headed guy, but these "admins" have gone to far. They were basically saying I couldn't play the game I wanted to in PUBLIC environment. I have a couple of screenshots/demo of the abuse.

If you look at the screenshot I absolutely did nothing to get put-teamed. The next couple are just screenshots of further evidence.(Note that I'm ><|yardsales)

The way I see it is this:

Everyone is treating this as though it were some horrible, abhorrent issue. Just look at the emotionally charged language; despite the innocuous definitions provided, I am quite certain that the original posters are quite aware of the connotations associated with these words.

It was a game. I think this deserves reiteration: this was a game. Parties on all sides acted with some degree or another of inappropriateness. This does not deserve the level of response that this one round of a game received.

We all acted inappropriately to some degree or another. I was the one that originally said, "Let's have a grangers vs blasters match next map." The admin did /putteam a player several times. The original poster teamkilled several times.

However, if people did not want to play this match, they should have said so. The only person who stated, explicitly, that he or she did not want to play was the original poster. I do not see a casual stroke of the F2 key as disapproval of the game, especially given that the map was ATCS. (The number of Nay votes can only be explicitly tied to a number of people not wanting to play on ATCS, which was what the vote covered--there's not a relationship between ATCS and the grangers vs blasters match.)

So chill out, people. Relax. Count to ten from twenty-seven, backwards. Pray, take a cold shower (a good, cheap way to cool off during the summer), do whatever you need to do, and then log back onto US1 to enjoy a game, because 99% of the time, this server "moderates" itself without the need for admin intervention.

Again: this was a game.

We learned our lessons. The admin will hopefully be a little more careful with his or her powers next time. The original poster will hopefully refrain from teamkilling again. And I or someone else will probably be making a grangers vs blasters mod soon, especially since I have my own server.

Last, but not least, I think there's something we're all forgetting to do. I'll put my foot forward and start off:

I apologize to Anonymous and any other players who did not enjoy the Granger vs Blaster match or felt repressed by it. I instigated the Granger vs Blaster match, and I contributed to the chaos that happened later. The TK of the original poster was likely accidental, and I overreacted, which lead to a kick. I had meant the game in jest, but it quickly spiraled down from there.

Let's move on, people! It happened. I doubt it'll happen again. Let's go enjoy this game instead of squabbling about it.

When things like this have cropped up, I have always tried to stay out of it. Administrative privileges are intended to uphold server rules, not lolgames. If you want a blaster vs. granger game, and some people are trying to enjoy a normal game, try another server. I happen to have a home-hosted granger-friendly server on a laggy connection that would be perfect. hueg grangers tiny grangers spinning grangers every granger you ever wanted batteries not included while supplies last only available in certain areas see website for full details

Yup. I'll admit to not having realized that the official server was such serious business (I'm used to the old-ish more wild-west days of SST), but I'm happy to commit to being (and pretty much always have been) more reserved with my admin powers than I was in this particular game.

Moose: I'm sorry I /putteamed you.  As Supertanker said, a bit more communication from you would have been helpful up-front, but I admit that I did indeed somewhat-overstep my admin-bounds with those /putteams, and for that I apologize.

Again: this was a game.

You don't know who you're talking to right now, do you?

These people sacrificed their first-born child for this game; it's not just a game anymore, it's a way of life.
