Questions from an old player
« on: August 01, 2012, 12:57:38 pm »
Hey guys :D
I'm mew, I used to play on house of nuts, but that died, and so did I. I didn't really get out of that server so I know not that many other trem players c:
I'll just highlight my questions, everything else is probably TLDR

So I basically got a new computer and decided to readd tremulous in it. of course, 1.1.
I got a little nostalgic so I decided to play some after installing it.
It's also really funny how empty the game is becoming. I got top kills in the human team before switching over to the alien side, which i got top kills in as well. It's a little sad as, I'm only good with the shotgun and ckit. (there were about 12 players, so it wasn't something retarded like a 2 v1)

ANYWAYS, after playing a game on the only decently populated server, I wondered how 1.2 development was going.
I lurked a little, sent a message or two to familiar names, peaked at the trem IRC channel, but I still don't really know what's going on.

From what I gather, 1.2 development isn't closed, but there is barely any progress.
Also, are there any servers that are dedicated to playing 1.2? I remember there being a seperate client for 1.2, and forgive me for this, I might have just shitted on myself and installed 1.2 wrong; but after installation I went back to 1.1 when I initiated the client.
Oh, I've installed 1.2 and played it a long while back, but my memory fails me anyways.
I'd be glad if someone knowledgeable in this area enlightens me.

What is (TM) I've seen it used in a couple of different posts now, I don't think it refers to "trademark"

And tremZ is working on unvanquished? What is that? Sounds like something I should try.
Do any of you play :D ?

oh one last question, i remember there being a command for using a grenade. I was trying to make a bind for it, but I couldn't remember the command. how annoying.

Also, here's my two cents on the dying tremulous: Everything dies. Accept it. Tremulous was a tremendous fun, but nothing lasts forever. It's bound to happen when you have more people leaving than joining.
It's unbalanced in many aspects, it tries to balance but it's an impossible task because little tweaks can change the entire game. I won't get into detail there, you can write a term paper on this.

Also aimbotting is no fun. I've tried it before, boring. It's completely disorienting as an alien. but mostly, it's unsatisfying, like having sex with a dead body. Trem isn't dying because of aimbots. sorry.

Thanks for reading mah story. And even though y'all are a bunch douchebags fighting over insignificant things ie. (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=16516.0), we have something in common-and that unifies us in the grand scheme of things.

Anyone from SST or Hon still play <3? holler

There was barely any progress on 1.2 noted lately (a year or so since last update was released) You can download GPP client (that allows you to play "1.2") from "files" page on http://tremulous.net . There are quite a few servers there, but the only ones that support "normal" gameplay and have players playing there are official ones.

TM probably indicates that it shouldn't be interpreted literally (for example SOON(TM) means forever), or holds no meaning at all, depending on context. Devhc probably will have more accurate answer to this one :P

TremZ (mostly dead), and Unvanquished (active) are both Tremulous forks. The second has already released few alphas (newest one, sixth, is scheduled to be released later today). On Official US Server there are even 10 bots you can practice with. Currently Unv is almost same as GPP (couple of relatively minor changes: nerfed pounce and dodge, more stamina for humans, little boost to luci) with few new models and graphics improvements.

As for grenade, it's "itemact gren"

Thank you very much asvarox :3
You know, I have two messages in my inbox in the forums. One of them is from you. I don't even remember what that was about rofl. Glad to see a semifamiliar face, I suppose.
I also found the gpp client. quite retarded I am, although I was right. Different client. I suppose I'll try out unv, the models look quite different.

What is (TM) I've seen it used in a couple of different posts now, I don't think it refers to "trademark"
generally, when a word is trademarked (TMed), the word becomes subject to a company's proprietary definitions and uses, whether or not the definitions conform to the etimology or pre-existing definitions of the word. (TM) is a derivation of TM: (TM) means that the word-to-which-(TM)-is-applied has a definition that the speaker (often) doesn't explicitly describe, a definition that may not even be exact, but is such that it is applicable for the case the speaker uses the word for. (TM) is often applied to words that have subjective meanings, such as good, long, or soon (eg., "S00N(TM), automated systems will replace amateur programmers, but no system will ever replace highly trained programmers."; here, the speaker may not even have an exact time frame (such as: within 50 years) in mind for the meaning of "soon"), to refute any arguments related to the subjectivity of the words. similarly, (TM) is also often applied to words that would be WRONG (where/how they're used) in a strict sense (eg. "there is an OFFICIAL(TM) Tremulous server.").

in short, any word dev/HC applies the (TM) to can mean anything he wants it to.

He just uses (TM) in the same way people use sarcasm when speaking: to signal irony. This isn't the same as it meaning anything he wants it to.

* arf remembers Mew.
ISaisWaaAAhhHH!!! seems vaguely familiar.. but I can't quite put a finger on it.
Pretty sure nobody remembers me, because I changed my name multiple times every day (and still do).  But my guid was registered as arf.
