Newbie help?
« on: August 25, 2006, 10:08:15 pm »
I'm not sure if there are a dozen other topics on this, because im not quite sure what I should be searching for.

No matter what team I am on, I am crushed by the other team.

As humans, I stock up on whatever equipment is better than mine and either wait in base if there are tyrants around, or explore if it is early in the game. No matter what type of alien I encounter, I am usually killed instantly. A few times I will somehow manage to hit a dretch with my rifle, but usually I will fire 2 clips before that. If I encounter a more evolved alien, they usually charge directly at me. This gives me confidence since tracing isnt necessary, although I usually empty a clip and a half into their neck/head region before I get crushed. (I know I am missing, but I shouldn't be.. point blank with a rifle on a target that is moving directly to me from ahead of me?)

As aliens, I get slaughtered easily no matter what class I am. When I am a dretch I usually get shot once with a rifle and die instantly. Even when I am a dragoon, I can't seem to do enough damage to any human to kill them. I always end up fleeing back to base, or dying. I have no experience being a Tyrant because my team usually never makes it to the third stage.

It is strange. I die instantly when I am an alien and encounter a human with a gun, yet when I am the guy with the gun, I can't hit the alien? How far am I supposed to aim ahead of them? I have no idea what I could be doing differently.

I hope that makes sense. O.o

I think it's safe to say that in Tremulous your own movment usually plays a more crucial factor than aim.  In fact, your movement is your weapon as some alien classes.

alien movement hints:

1) do not move in straight lines as a dretch in combat, it is instant death
2) do not stick to the floor unless you're a tyrant, wallclimb if you can do it, wall jump as a maurader, as goon pounce for a surprise entrance or a quick getaway.
3) even though you do not have a crosshair, all of your attacks as alien are aimed.  Be sure to look directly at your victims head when attacking.
4) If you're outmatched, attack, flee, repeat.  Humans don't regen health so every little peck helps your team.
5) aliens each have a special skill to escape a fight: wallclimb, walljump, pounce, charge.   keep an eye on your health and flee any fight you fear losing.   often you can come back and finish it before the human reaches the safety of his base.

human movement hints:

1) A goon will get in close on you to try to bite your head off, use this to your advantage by circle strafing around them.
2) Never try to run away from a goon, although it's a good tactic to make them think you're running away then change your direction abruply.  If you're lucky you can catch them with a lot of fire as they pounce right past you and are forced to start their attack over.
3) Walk backwards away from oncoming dretches while spraying the area of their approach with fire
4) Make use of crouch.  This gives you the ability to move your head out of the path of an aliens attack and also has a change in armour protection.
5) Make use of sprint.  It is your only chance to outrun aliens.
6) Make use of tight spots when battling larger aliens.  There are places in almost all maps where you can escape a tyrant's reach.

Good advice tjw =) (I remember you from a match btw)

It's also handy to imagine what you'd do if you were your opponent (After you've played alot, this comes naturally).

If you're alien it's best to stay out of the line of fire for most of the time. This means:

* Make them have to turn / spin / hula to aim at you (e.g. jumping their heads rather than running away)

* only 'pecking' (attack then run-round-corner/jump-over-head) until you're sure their health is low and yours is high enough to take a few bullets

* giving yourself somewhere to go after a pounce other than flat into a wall

* don't just use the floor space (there's a whole third dimension!)

* lure them away from defences

* take alternative routes to where you can see people are headed and ambush

* be a granger if you're running low on points (that doesn't mean you have to decon everything... rebuild... that sort of thing)

* treat turrets like people with very low mouse sensitivity (i.e. attack from the back. Stay behind the shooting side [takes practice])

Whereas, if you're human it's all about keeping them in the line of fire. This means:

* running backwards from targets (only to be done when you're sure you're not going to back into something just as big, bad and ugly)

* not going on solo missions.. take a friend with you to cover your ass

* stay near walls of big rooms (this means you can look into the room and know that the thing behind you is probably a wall)

* when the big scary monsters attack, don't turn a blind eye to the little dretches... they want you to be distracted (that's why they came out when the big ugly thing did) they can make easy kills if you pay them that second of attention.

* support conkit guys with defensive guys

* alert / ask about drastic base changes (in team chat ¬_¬)

That's all I can think of for now. Hope it helps =)

I have another question:
When I play this game it feels like everything is fast and frantic. I'm comparing it to other multiplayer first person shooters, like halo, nightfire, and the like. Are you guys mostly using controllers, or just the mouse and keyboard? I find it quite difficult to look around and aim with the mouse while at the same time moving with the keyboard. I know this sounds incredibly silly, but I don't know where to put my hands. Remember the N64 controller with the 3 grips? It's a similar problem.
Thanks you guys for helping us noobs.

things are not too fast on humans side. mouse and keyb should be fine. you need to practice more.for example play q3arena offline for a while

You don't need a lot of keys, just place them logicly and remember them..
As for gameplay, always remember: MOVE!
When you stand still or move in a straight line, you're dead in < 3 seconds.
As alien: AMBUSH!, wait behind a corner above the passage, drop when a human passes (on his head if you have the right timing) and attack him.
When you're silently chasing a human, don't jump, it'll alert him with the sound you make..

don't forget these tips when you're playing aliens:

-know when to run. going against a las gun with less then half health usually results in death. if you feel like you're going to die, run.

-headshots! when dretching aim up and jump. 2 hits will take em down.

-playing as granger, think about where the best ppl would place buildings. place tubes in corners or little nooks as opposed to way out in the open.

-playing as goon, ur biggest loss would be ur speed. pounce often.

-It takes no skill to use a chaingun. It takes plenty of skill to master it.

all your important keys should be within reach of wasd, your left hand should never leave those keys, and your right hand should never leave the mouse (i make an exception for my evolve/buy binds, because it's still faster than clicking on the class/item), play around with mouse sensetivity until you can instantly do a 180, but maintain as much precision as you can.

Ok let's plan it out. Asva, you are nub, go sit on rets, I will build, you two go feed like hell, you go pwn their asses, and everyone else camp in the hallway, roger?
the dretch bites.

Hehe, I have my sensitivity all the way up, so it's more like 900 without lifting the mouse (maked circle strafing easy on other FPSes)

You should probably play as a human until you understand the game a little better.

With the human team, some skills, such as aiming, can be carried over from other FPS's.

Speaking of aiming, it's best that you join a server with a low ping.  Basically, it's a measure of how long it takes a server to respond to button presses and such.  You are required to lead a target more and more as your ping increases, so try to join a server with a ping of 100 or less, preferably less.

In my experience, armor is usually more important than weapons.  With better armor, you might survive long enough to kill an alien.  If you skip the armor and get a better weapon, you will find yourself getting killed in 1 or two hits.

As for weapons, it's not always best to buy the most expensive weapon you can afford.  The choice of weapon should depend on the circumstances at the time, and then what you can afford.

A good example of this is the mass driver.  It's somewhat expensive, but it's utility is rather limited.  It's Tremulous's sniper rifle.  If you take it into close range combat against a Dretch, you will probably die (unless you have leet skillz).  If you are defending a long hallway, you might do a little better.

And then there's the shotgun.  It's cheap, and does good damage, but the rate of fire is low, and the range is terrible.  It's a terrible choice where distance is involved, and if your aim is poor, the low rate of fire won't always allow a second or third shot against a dretch, although the spread can be nice.

Also, make sure you use your medkit if you get injured badly enough, or if you are running back to base to heal.  If you use it, just step onto a medipad to get another one.

If you are injured or low on ammo, a tactical retreat may also be in order.  Each time an alien doesn't kill you is one more kill they need to get to the next stage.

It's widely accepted that a mouse and keyboard is faster and more precise than a controller.  It may be difficult to adapt, though.

Does this affect accuracy a lot?

If you get surprised often, it will make your aim terrible from your arm jerking all the time (though I once got a lucky headshot that way). If you can control your arm and hand well enough and your coordination is perfect, you get a major benefit.
