Tremulous' father, a Quake2 mod, the first game of this style...

Personally,I think Gloom is a better game.Unfortunately, the server browser is non existent, and the game is somewhat unstable, and the unavoidable fact that at the very most theres only 18 playing at any time. But the maps are very good (most of them) and memorable quotes from the humans ("If you can handle a piece of this I'll give ya a cookie")

Tremulous is a great game, but the aliens could use some better class variation like in Gloom.Atleast a weak flying class would make this a bit more fun,and the Adv.Dragoon could use the spikes as mines over doorways instead of the extremely inaccurate and low range bullets it uses currently. The Adv.Basilisk and the Adv.Maruader are perfect,I love the lightning and gas attacks.
PS,Human Mass Driver could use some tweaking, the shot should reach its target faster.

Over all I like Gloom more, but its undeniable that Gloom isn't very popular for lack of a good server browser.

Gloom is also a low quality DOOM ripoff shooter for the Amiga, as I discovered when I tried to tell some people about Tremulous.

You got the wrong gloom buddy.Youre thinking

The Gloom I'm talking about is a Quake 2 mod

Heres some screenshots of each:

Why couldn't Tremulous have been just a Quake 3 remake of Gloom? From the screenshots, it looks as if a Gloom remake would be way better than the current Tremulous game.

Anyone wanna make that into a mod?

Team Reaction (Makers of Q2Gloom) are currently working on a Doom 3 mod of Gloom, just like the good old Q2 Gloom, but with better graphics, levels and playability

In my opinion, trem is the vanilla version of gloom. Gloom has more clases/weapons and heavily relies on teamworks and strategy.
While teams in trem benefit from similar actions, it isn't quite necessary since there is nothign to prevent or discourage rambo behaviour.

However, I find trem to be more fun due to the amount of people and ease of use.

This is one of the reasons why veteran Gloom players rock in trem. It's just a piece of cake for them. (think of the SGA dudes)
Yelling at team mates since 2006!

I used to play tons of Gloom when it had more people.Unfortunately,I was always the Wraith,a flying alien class with claws and acid blob spit,so while it was great fun, none of those skills transfered to Trem.

I'm not sure what you're referring to as there are two server browsers (GSB and Q2Browser), and one of the most popular Gloom servers had 360+ days uptime.

I just think it would be more popular if GSB was integrated into the gloom program, but I know  that would be hard.
and the unstableness I would always get from some dll not being configured or something.i had quite a few crashes, but R1CH was smart enough to include ghost codes,so that saved a bunch of frags.

I heard that Trem's standalone release killed gloom.  Then messing around with the video settings I made ATCS look pretty much like gloom. Click
Maybe this new tremugloom mod can just use existing maps but lock r_mapoverbrightbits to 0 and add flashlights! :P

I don't have Quake 2 (and lack the motivation to pirate it).

Exactly.. Thought it might be neat to try gloom out for a minute there.. it asked for my quake 2 directory.. clicked the x and haven't bothered since.

You dont need the the whole version of Quake 2, you can download a quake 2 demo and then use some patch to make it work with gloom. Or atleast that is what somebody told me.

It would be great if the upcoming Gloom 2 mod was a standalone, but I dont think the Doom 3 engine has been released for free yet.

And Gloom was so great for its variety in classes, but I have to admit,I like the cash system for humans in Trem.

the quake2 source code (and therefore binary) is available for free, under the GNU GPL (just like quake3 now), the quake2 data still costs you, but for a complete conversion, you probably don't need it.
