Poll: Test servers should not restrict pings?
« on: August 31, 2006, 03:18:16 am »
After checking out MG's recent betamapfest weekend (and failing to get in because my ping was just out of range *pouts* :P) I was thinking:

The several servers that host beta maps for testing sometimes have ping limits. I can understand why people want to have ping limits but if we want more people to test these maps, perhaps it would be all right to remove them?

For me, as a builder, I love to test out new maps and learn new ways of building things, and it bites to me that I can't because my ping just isn't good enough to get on the server.

So I'm just asking to all the server runners out there - Can we get rid of that?

The n00bs already won't be joining since they'd need to download the maps, so that solves one of the bigger problems of limiting idiots on the server, right? :) *hopeful smiles*

Please? >_<

The problem with high pings is not that you might be an idiot (and idiot can get a fast internet connection) but lag-related relics. Imagine how difficult it would be to kill a dragoon warping all over the place -- it's fast pounce speed could make it practically unstoppable. Imaging how difficult it is to pounce when the air is littered with dretches that haven't hit the floor yet because their connection is too slow.

I would recommend having more test servers located all over the world, but unfortunately it seems like 3/4 of the servers are completely empty 3/4 of the time.
Need help? Ask intelligently. Please share solutions you find.

Thats what we need, helpful players, not more powerful admins.

Most of the warpers I see are players with relatively low ping, and I've been playing q3 based games for a while, a good couple of years on 56k too. Basically having a higher ping does not make you warp, having a crappy or unstable connection (which may or may not affect your ping) and/or crappy settings do.

I know that people with high pings may cause "warping", but surely there could be a unlimited ping server that you're not really intended to play on, but mearly to examine the new maps.

I realise, of course, you can't get a true feel for a map without playing it, but it would be nice for people with crappy pings.

Maybe you were the one lagging at that time

About the topic : I know derelict has a higher ping setting than the other tremulous.info servers. This allows more people to try out the new maps. However you cant set that limit too high because you will end up with an unplayable game.

I think what you really need is a US server with only test maps like Derelict in Europe. With a US-based server, most of the people who cant play on Derelict would be able to test the new maps. But you will have to convince an admin to modify his map rotation ;)

This is what I just wanted to post. Thanks Ksempac, you just saved my some typing... ;)

General ping limit on tremulous.info and db@ servers is 140. This allows even modem users from other european countries to join and does not have a too heavy impact on gameplay.
Derelict is even running sv_maxping 250 and sometimes gets heavy lagging people onto the server. But being a betaserver nothing is perfect anyway... ;)
Whatever, anything beyond 250 will constantly produce heavy lags and warping effectively destroying gameplay for the other players. :(

So the ping limit will remain on Derelict, sorry.

To me, part of the test of a beta map is to test gameplay, which may not be a realistic test with really high pings running around.  Also, a player can load a beta map up locally if they just want to wander around in it, or test building and/or assault strategies, which may be all that is possible on a beta map server if your ping is to high.

Keep the ping limitations.  Look for servers that allow you to vote on beta maps if they are not in rotation (like the }MG{ server)  There may be more of them than you think, and it may become more common if you ask the admins at the server you frequent if beta maps are available.  If enough people ask...
You get the idea.

True I suppose. I can *sometimes* connect to Derelict, but that's pretty much the only beta map server I've ever been able to connect to since I live in Asia.

There was supposedly an Australian server, but I can't find it anymore, and Popsky, the Hong Kong server, runs only the basic map rotation.

Maybe I should ask for Beer Garden to have some beta map rotations, it's the next nearest server I can play on with decent (read - no warping) pings. =\

Thank you for the feedback though everyone. :)
