Should SST host a new map expo?
« on: September 24, 2006, 07:33:20 pm »
The idea that MG has spawned, about having a day/period of time with only new maps is great, and i was wondering if you folks would want somethng like that on SST.
After you answer, if you say yes, what duration do you think we should run the expo for?

What would this consist of?
All the new or beta maps just that, or all the new or beta maps plus all the "old" ones. Either way I'm voting yes, but I just want to know, so I can update me maps :D

It would be all new maps, except UTCS and a few others.

If i could figure out a way to have maprotations cycle every x period of time, say after 21 days, i would have one rotation for normal gameplay, then one for every 3 weekends.

I think a random 24-hour period every 7 days would be best. that would allow everyone world-wide to play, and it would happen regularly, so missing it one day isn't so bad.

YES!  I HIGHLY encourage this :-)

My 2 cents.  Have it all beta maps, run for at least a 24 hour period.  MG server runs on linux, I've found that you can copy over the maprotation.cfg as tremded.x86 does not lock the file, and reads it to determine the next map to load.  Soooo, you can have a cron/scheduled task that just replaces maprotation.cfg with the rotation you want, no restarting the process or even interrupting  a match necessary.  Test it on windows though, I don't know if the windows build locks the file though I doubt it internally caches the map rotation.

When you have it and for a day or two before, have your admins create binding for, spam, and post everywhere:

Turn on autodownload in options

It will save your server from kicking everyone at map change (if you decide to go all beta maps :-) ), or at least a lot of people.  Nothing sucks more than having a GREAT match with a full server, followed by crickets chirping.  Most won't know what it means, but they will figure it out quickly when they are kicked.  Then they will ask where they can get the rest of the maps with quicker downloads ;-)

I think the SST server is an EXCELLENT place for beta maps, as the server already seems to pushes the envelope of the game, it will give a really good road test for these maps.

Or, with your large user base, perhaps having a day for a certain map.  Such as, aegis sunday, where every 4th match is the aegis map.  That may lessen the pain of autodownloads for your particular server.
just my 2 cents based on my limited experience.  Let me know if I can do anything to help.

edit: Sorry if I get a little over excited about this

There needs to be a map pack availible for dowload somewhere.

It sucks to sit there for 20 minutes while a map autodownloads.

A map pack would help ease the pain.  If there is a lot of bandwidth, TJW's build, using www downloads would help as well.  Uh, help the people that have tjw's build, and probably already know about beta maps.  heh, vicious circle there.  Maybe it's time for an incremental release, or just a "patch"/Service Pack ;-)

Paradox:  Try a scheduled task that just copies a preconfigured maprotation.cfg over top of the previous one.  Like, maprotation.cfg.prod copied over maprotation.cfg for normal, maprotation.cfg.beta for beta rotations.  So you'd have 2 scheduled tasks, one to start it, one to end it.  This assumes that tremded.x86 for windows doesn't lock the file.  I don't have windows at my present location, so I can't test.  Next time I get a chance, I will test though.

Yes! definately yes!
Instead of a random day, how about either saturday or sunday? Any constant day, just not monday (so as to not overlap with mg)

I really want to play a high-bp game of atcsz  8)

People shouldn t talk about bans on SST on this forum, but they should talk about map rotation on SST on this forum...

You know you could be a little more logical...

Note : I m not flaming, i dont care much about all of this since i dont play on SST. The thing is i was thinking that some people who doesnt play on SST may reply on this topic, and that would mess up the results...and then i remembered confess's post about the fact that SST's forum was the place where they should complain about bans on SST...

He's asking the opinion of the tremulous playerbase, thus is belongs here.
A ban is a private apeal to one server, and thus does not belong here.
awr.

just an idea...

why not just slowly phase in the beta and custom maps?
like, over a period of weeks or months?
and then just leave them in the normal rotation?

Because they are beta maps.

We may do that, seeing as TJW has given us access to his beta map server hosting.

Go give that man all your money.

i dont mean all of them-- just the ones people like

if people dont like a map, then it would probably be fine to remove it
