On the forum we've had Awsome Games, Funniest Game, Favorite Builder...

Here's a question.  Who's your favorite "leader"?

We're all agreed that Tremulous has aspects of RTS, and more to the point, teamwork.  Don't get me wrong, much fun can be had by two teams of "good players" acting as completely seperate entities going it ala lone soldier...  and Yes, they DO have fun.  But in my experience, I've found the most fullfilling games are those between two very organised teams.

At the risk of being extremely off-mark, a fair analogy could be football(soccer) What's a decent team? Greece who won Euro-2004 truly working as a team, or Brazil, and to a certain extent Italy, both with Fantastic players who (and here may be my worst blunder) play as individuals(?comments please).
The point being, both strategies sum up to an enjoyable, resultfull game, both to play and to watch.

Now that's out of the way, let's focus on the former. When one side takes a team oriented approach to the game, each individual team member's skill-level is, virtually, irrelevant. When pitted against an unorganised team of "Trem l33t". The former WILL will win.

In this situation the "team players" would surely win, however large the spread of skill may be, but ONLY with..
-1. co-operation=> Working as a team (no trying to, individually, steal the limelight).
-2. coordination=> Which is provided by the "leader" that this post emphasises.
-3... This is where "as long as the team isn't comprised entirely of newbies" WOULD go (but in my experience, an exclusively noob, yet coordinated, team CAN beat a team of average skill "Ronaldo's")

Summary.
Tremulous can, and will, be played in whatever way each individual likes. Fair enough, open source...
 What makes a good leader?

1."I've been playing for decades, do this do that, no, don't do that"

2."Everyone got enough evo?  Let's mount an attack"..."press 'Q' then choose"..."Nice thinking but, for such&such a reason..."..."good idea, do you all agree?"

1. or 2.? If only it where as simple as that. A good leader will give you hope, reasurance and courage when all looks lost (even to him/her) fight, guide & reasure, even when killed & spectating with no spawns!

Back to football, Manchester United "back in the day" (Quoting someone else here) "Giggs and Cantona had an almost psychic connection" When you reach the stage of KNOWING your team-mate(s), knowing what the're doing, why the're doing it, being able to do what they assume you're doing in the given circumstance... Well, THAT's a team, but for now,

Who is your favorite leader?

I have no favorite leader, but on average, type two will win because he helpes less skilled people become better. HOWEVER, humans are the team that needs organisation, aliens favor a lone wolf playstile, with people just screaming ATTACK PUSSIES, OM/REACTOR DOWN

I agree with you to the extent that a "lone-wolf" alien team vs a "lone-wolf" human team (disregarding experience/skill) would win. But, an organised A vs organised H = very interesting game.  (Too bad H, usually consist of, not only poor players, but players that refuse to listen to, even more experienced, peers)

I listen to people!  :O
I don't know who my favorite leader is... it's always different...
but well... I go to the front mostly, and I would mostly just rush to the enemy base and see what's happeinng, and if anything good or bad is happeining, I would just report back. So I don't think I'm not that leaderlike... but... sometimes I am

If we ignore ping-time and huge BP and possibly SST-style (No offence intended) servers- Trem is... hold on, second thoughts...

Tremulous is played by hundreds, if not thousands, of people around the globe.  As such, its players are so diverse that, cmapming, newbie, feeder or not, each game is sure to be unique.  This is true, but the BEST games, for both newbies and pros, are those where a STRONG opponent is beaten, against the odds, by a team who fought together, lost credits/evo together, and (almost)WON together!

i usually lead attacks if my team is shite or theres 3/4 players around my ability

depends on server aswell

on the crap servers where theres usually noobs and the odd good player i try to lead as aleins, but most people just do what they want

a team of co-ordinated humans is ridiculously hard to defeat

as a rule of thumb I follow orders/directions of ppl who I know and respect, or ppl with more/equal/little less than my score, simple as that
I expect the same from the others, for me someone arguing with a scoreboard leader that 'he knows better' and sporting mighty 5 kills in 15 minute of the game is AN IDIOT.

Newbies, don't ignore someone giving the team moral (There's a difference between barking orders and suggestions from greatly experienced players)

Newbies, if nobody's talking, try to "take charge".  Think "how would I like to be lead?" (No belittling) Be openminded, above all respect your peers and they (should) respect you.

l33t...?

no comment. CU|ams says it all!

Above all, happy gaming.

Simply get average most kills on many games on the server, and the players will listen to you ;)

@ DGK

There is sometimes a need to bark orders, since a barked order is fast and sharp.

do you say:

Hello, little granger, i observed you hovering just outside the human base in between the human raids... ..i suggest that you remove yourself from this area, since humans can quite easily kill you if you linger here, and get kills for the next stage.

please consider this.

Or, do you say/shout

Edit: what works better is taunting them and slashing once.

Granger, outta here, NOW!

maybe add a plz in the end of that.

Actually, sometimes the humans don't necessarily need the whole team to be organised (although it does help).  If find that in a lot of of games, simple teamwork (like telling your team when your going to decon the reactor/om!!!) helps a lot.  Also, I find that I can let the team do what ever, while I take whatever route I want, the aliens don't expect it, then I do some serius damage.

Having said that, my favourite leader is anyone who can get their team to do what they say.[/i][/b]

Having a "leader" is a bad thing. It works on public servers playing with random people sometimes, but playing with people you are familiar with, where everyone acts as a leader and follower works best.

People tend to think of themselves more than anything else. When it's "attack now!", that means "I need help attacking". For the most part, people don't consider what their teammates are doing and assume that what they are doing is the most important task. If they didn't, team-play would work much better.
Need help? Ask intelligently. Please share solutions you find.

Thats what we need, helpful players, not more powerful admins.

Just finnished a fantastic game (SD/TL) a game of Mutual respect/descission making, a game where two team members who valued oneanothers oppinions, a game of coordinated newbies (as opposed to 'noobs') vs an average human team.  Thoroughly enjoyable.

ps
@lava,
I'd hate to reach your, percieved, level.  Too much pressure to produce results.

Respect to you!

If I provide the final tactical move towards victory, I'm in the spotlight.

If you do anything but siglehandedly win a loosing battle, Comments gallore!

From my, limited, experience though, CU|ams forever. Huge respect!

shouldnt you then lead yourself from time to time lava?

And yes leaders are a good thing, though it works better as a role different players assume at different times than a position one player holds for an entire match.

When a player takes out a reactor or OM, yelling "Attak Now" is very much a team helping act.  Usually the player who takes out a reactor/om doesnt live to finish off the opponent, and doesnt have enough time to run all the way back from their base to finish off the enemy themselves before recovery has taken place.
