flashlight...dont flame till u read!!!!!
« on: October 12, 2006, 11:19:39 pm »
Ok i know this has been suggested before and many ppl have been told to turn up the brightness. But i think that if you could keep the game dark(brightness on normal) and add flashlights it would be alot more enjoyable. This is because then the game would have more mood to it and that way you if a dragoon pops out of nowhere you could accually get scared outta ur seat. In addition to this it would probably make being a human alot harder therefore....nvm anyways FLASHLIGHTS!!!!!!!! :D  :D

Mappers develop their maps for a game with no torch, so if torches are implemeted it might be better to allow/disallow them on a per-map or per server basis. IIRC it has been suggested that torches could be made a buyable item.

One issue raised is that torches for humans would require something similar for the aliens to avoid balance issues. Comments on this point stated that the human radar removes the need for extra illumination in current maps because it's leads humans to alien structures whether they are in dark areas or not.

Also, what would a torch light look like in the Q3 engine? It'd look ugly if it were like the torch lighting in half-life.

Like underwater effects, it's debatable whether implementing a torch and resolving any issues it may create would be worth the time because there aren't many maps that require it.

OTOH, again like underwater effects, if you build it they *might* come ;)

You could put the flashlight on your shoulder, like how "marines" from starcraft and "marines" from aliens has. Like, you can click something on the keyboard and there could be the "click" sound and there will be light.
That'd be cool you know, I agree with ms1max. That WOULD be cool.
Like in Aliens 2, it was so scary

How about a flash light that is always attached to the players shoulder and aliens have night vision though you would see the human flash light but not the aliens heres the thing thats different. the distance that players 'seeing distance' is short, two or three metres (to navigate in dark passages but you can still get jumped on)

all models should have this function

By pressing a desinated button toggles the flash lights power or night
vision

one problem aslo is the stucture sometimes don't react to pitch black, in a dark room (pitch black) the only thing i saw was the overmind as if it was 'photoshoped' from a well light area.

The problem is that you can already do it. Why add an item that you have to spend money on when you can just adjust your brightness? Okay, so there are maps with lots of really dark areas? Just bind different brightness settings. This button sets r_gamma to 0.8 for really bright rooms, this one sets it to 1.8 for dark rooms.

If it's not an item for people to buy, only the newbie would use it. Why? Because presumably it displays on other peoples' screens too... you can't hide in a pitch black room when you're carrying a flashlight. But if you don't need the flashlight (you don't), why use it?

Though, I suppose it could be useful to confuse dumb aliens.

The general reason we didn't put anything like a flashlight in Trem is because it is impossible to enforce lighting.  Unless the area is actually pitch black (and you can still get around that with some work I'm pretty sure) there's always a way to get around it and create an unfair advantage.

thats why you should implement something to fix that. Update the system a bit so it can handle that.

Have anyone thought about that this might affect the gameplay in a negative way, think about it, tremulous is a fast- paced game, all about dodging, tactics and reflexes.  how do you think it would be if it was a wussy- scare- fest? lesser tactics, lesser skills, dodging and all, more luck- based..

you can hide well enough as it is, from humans, at last, and the flashlight wont fix this at the least , for the human's part.

rather implement a cloaking pack, simply removeing humans from an aliens sense of smell or whatever.

what i have thought about that would be cool, is another tracking system for aliens, instead of the radar, aliens could "smell" a humans trail, alas, he could see a faint glowing trail where a human had set his feet for a short while afterwards..

then make a gameplay mode that leads to "scary" mood
like, survival, where if you die once, you are gone.
And humans are like, the main part in that mode?
That'd be scary, and awesome

Without my flashlight I am useless. I must shine my flashlight true. I must shine brighter than my enemy, who is trying to bite me. I must lit him before he bites me. I will. Before Timbo I swear this creed: my flashlight and myself are defenders of my base, we are the masters of my enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

.... dretches in shadows = REALLY REALLY ANNOYING.. we don't need to give aliens even MORE ways to sneak up on you.. Glowing eyes in a dark room might be neat.. atmosphere etc might be neat.. muzzle flash might be neat.. but trem isn't really scary imho.. its more of a fun game than a horror game.. and shadows/darkness with spot lighting could hurt that.

Feel free to code up a mod with a flashlight yourself if you really want one.. but i wouldn't ever expect one in the game for any reason.

alien radar wouldnt help you much and humans would be the one with shiny stick
bah r_gamma 2.0 forget about shiny stick

Dretches have a color that ALWAYS stands out from a pitchblack area, actually, I cannot recall any Alien having a colour that makes them easy to hide in dark areas. Only the alien structures have a color that makes for good hiding in shadows.

I have read every post (Including yours, DIGI Byte) and this is a horrible idea.  It is 100% unenforceable.  Even if you were to remove the gamma setting (A stupid idea), there's still the BRIGHTNESS SETTING ON YOUR MONITOR!

Undeference wins the thread.

Look at Gloom (for quake2\supposedly going standalone soon but fully playable with just the q2 demo, patch, and mod at planetgloom.com, it makes you better at trem... honest), It battled the infamous lighting issue for years, quite unsuccessfully. Gloom tried to enforce darkness to encourage flashlights but there were always those who could see in pitch black with no flashlight. I dont believe there is any way that they can stop you from using the right video card or the right drivers to get any level of brightness you want.

Yeah, Q2Gloom will go standalone at about the same time when Duke Nukem Forever goes gold, Doom3Gloom goes beta and PlanetTremulous goes online.

What do you know? almost every one who supports this idea knows about adjusting the gamma. I know that it can't be used in the q3engine the way it is now. i suggest moddifing the q3engine, and don't say its complicated they did it in half-life 1.

maybe it could be the admin's option, if there is to be level adjusting, or just flashlight
or that option could be set for the mapping people, for more scary style map, no to gamma, yes to normal ones.
