Tremulous Balance Mod rev. 2

First a technical note: I know SVN 755 is outdated and servers do not seem to be using it, or have some patch applied that I do not know of (not TJW's backport?). I tried with SVN 823 and got the recursive menu error so this patch ended up for 755. As it changes mostly gameplay code, it should be easy to integrate with other versions and patches of Trem.

I run a test server for this mod. It is not always up, but those interested look for 'Balance Mod TEST SERVER' or \connect risujin.dyndns.org to join.

This mod tries to fix specific balance issues with Tremulous. More specifically:
- Preventing camping humans by adding a alien grenade (Bile Dretch).
- Allowing humans to catch large aliens with the low-damage green saw allows humans to catch and hold hit and run tyrants.
- Giving human builders more power against dretches by giving the blaster a small knockback (which disorients dretches).

Features Added

- Aliens can devolve into lower classes and regain half of spent evos!
- Credit/evo donation command 'donate #'. Alms for the poor!
- Select weapon command 'itemgun', to use: \bind g itemgun
- Blaster now has a splash knockback. Knock around dretches!
- Integrated TJW's 755 backport patch. What it does, I don't know!
- New Tranquilizer Saw grabs enemies. Grab squirrely tyrants!
- New Bile Dretch explodes shortly after death. No more turret squatters!

Tweaks

- Evolving will display new class and evos spent.
- Toned down turret damage.
- Double Basilisk poison cloud range.
- Barricade health and regen doubled.

Bugs Fixed

- Construction kit cools down when blaster is being used.
- EV_PAIN no longer overflows byte size. Tyrants will not cry at 256 hp.

Installation

If you want to run the mod unmodified just drop the pk3 into Tremulous/balance and run tremded with +set fs_game balance added to the normal options and it will work.

I do hope you cannot devolve to granger :o The game is hard enouth at stage 1 for humans without adding an easy way for aliens to build in places you need a jetpack to reach.

No, Cant devolve to granger..only to dretch. I downloaded this and tried it on his hosted server. Its pretty good, especially the blaster splash damage

my server is hosting it [UVache] Server #2 feel free to come on in and test it. If u dont have it u can d/l it from my server... it should only take 1:30 mins MAX

Wow! I never expected such a positive response! The only feedback I've had until now is "crappy mod" from Daenyth. Thanks guys, makes all the effort worthwhile! :D

I forgot to mention (and I guess its obvious) but the mod is a client and server modification so anyone connecting will have to download.

No you cannot devolve into granger. Also I had to fix the Trem evolution tree so that you must devolve into a base class rather into its advanced form. So Tyrant -> Goon -> Adv. Goon expends 0 evos.

Yes I wanted to do it this way. The way it is setup now though is the explosion triggers on respawn (which is delayed slightly). Im going to have to learn more how the respawn process works to change it. I'll look at it this weekend.

The patch is not specific to SVN 755. I just don't know how to make a client/server pk3 for any other version. If anyone can help out, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to play, just connect to any of the servers mentioned in this thread. You only need the patch if you roll your own game from source.

For clients (just to play) you can either simply connect to the server and play with the stock 1.1.0 client (TJW's should work as well however). Wait for the download, no installation of anything.

For servers it's a bit more complicated. The pk3 file will work on Windows and Linux. Place it in the balance folder under your game tree (Tremulous/balance). You should be running a svn 755 server. These come in the Debian/Ubuntu packages I believe. You can also download TJW's backport binaries (Windows or Linux) you can get them at his website (http://tremulous.tjw.org/backport/).

Create a server.cfg in the balance folder as usual (no specific modifications here necessary). Run tremded.x86 or tremulous.exe with these params:
tremulous.exe +set dedicated 2 +set fs_game balance +exec server.cfg
tremded.x86 +set dedicated 2 +set fs_game balance +exec server.cfg

You will have to route port 30720 UDP to your server computer if you are behind a router. My experience with router hosting and Tremulous has been really strange frankly. I can connect to my own server (on a server computer) over LAN just fine, but I cannot see it listed in the servers list nor can I connect to it over the internet, although others can! I have no idea why. Ask someone to test your server.

ok... make thwe balance folder called Tremulous/balance or make a folder in the Tremulous folder called balance? i had put the balance folder in my base caause my server kept sdhuting down.



also i want to add patches to my server like Deny/Allowbuild BUT do i d/l them(i cant a new browser opens and shows me gibberish when i click on the links.... i wanna get these patches http://ipxserver.dyndns.org/tremulous/patches/svn825/) or copy and past the in server.cfg or WHAT?!!?

After fixing a bug that prevented the bile dretch for harming human buildings (I know, I know) I put turret damage back to normal... but I forgot to remove it from the tweaks list.  :oops:

I too like the mods and tweaks, except for toned down turrets.  Humans have enough problems without their base being so easily raped by larger aliens and maras.

Any chance of enlarged chaingun capacity?

Tweaks like that are a mine-field. Its the easiest of hacks, but every person has a preference. I think what would be a much more interesting modification is to get rid of Tremulous.h and move all of that data into CVARS.
