Tremulous Videos! - UPDATE: NOW IN H264 FORMAT!!!
« on: December 12, 2006, 09:44:52 am »
***UPDATE***
It's been a while, but the D347H Website has FINALLY been updated!
I'll give the full lowdown at the end of this thread, but for those who just want the basics of it, the website has had a massive update, and so all the videos are now in both wmv format, and the h264 MP4 format.  So everyone should be able to watch them now.  ALL the videos (including the new ones) are in both formats, so there should be nobody who can't watch the movies :)

Check out the end of this for the full lowdown 8)

Hey all,
For the past few weeks, my friends and I have been working on a series of videos (and plenty of other things) based on tremulous.  Now these, and many other things aside, are now available for download, viewing etc on our new website.  Visit us at:
http://death.botl.au.com

Farewell and may D347H find you swiftly... 8)

uh, english please?  But about the blind lasgunner:
I'm assuming you are referring to our first video.  That was from a loooong time ago.  The computer I used had a bit of a fit at the time that I was filming, so I thought the granger was still alive.

So thankfully, my aim has improved.

And if by "tutoriam mode" you mean the interface saying press X to do blah etc, I did not plan on taking videos at the time.  Good games are not always planned.  I was on at the same time as my friend by chance.  I just so happened to also have fraps running (by accident), so I recorded the video for future reference.  It just so happened that that was the best video for the purpose.  I use the best looking video in the movies, not the one with the best aim.

Just make an nice AVI that everyone can use.
Dump stupid formats like WMV and quicktime.

AVI only works if you can find the right decoder.  Since there are a multitude of AVI encoders that all use the same file extension (AVI), sometimes it's not that easy to get to work.

Okay, thanks to everyone who had a look, and thanks for all the positive feedback.  Now to answer your questions:
The main program used to make the movies was Movie Maker.  However, it is somewhat useless on its own, so some other programs were used to make it slightly more impressive.

Now, I'd like to make quicktime versions, but sadly lack the technology to do it.  Will try to get other formats running.  As has been stated, AVI files are only good if you got a decoder, and a lot of computers don't.  I learnt that the hard way.  :P

And finally, the "Damn Dretch" movie has been fixed!  Go have a look!  :D

Use mencoder
and instead of using proprietary formats like windows media and quicktime, try using a "standard" like mpeg

I still can't get a lot of MPG videos to work on my mac.  MPEG usually yes but for some reason or another videos with MPG extensions are iffy.  (And yes, I tried renaming them or whatever.  I do realize that they're both essentially MPEG-4 compression).

WMV is fine as long as you don't try to add any spybot website launching code inside of it (and as long as it isn't streaming video).  MOV is great for mac users but a lot of PC owners get their panties in a bunch if they have to download quicktime.

Never ever use RM.  EVAR!

the PC users aren't complaining about quicktime. the linux users are complaining about both quicktime and wmv, since we can't play them at all without breaking the law iirc.

LOL
and quicktime is essentially a PURE implementation of OPEN standard MPEG-4 AVC (h.264)

If someone wants to convert the file into a format that mac and/or linux users can use, please do.  In the meanwhile, I will look into a format that can be read.  Any suggestions from either linux or mac users would be appreciated.  If you can get the videos converted however, give me a yell.  In the meanwhile, I'm want to know from all you mac/linux users: if I converted it to mpg, how many of you would be willing to download video LAN (a program that reads mpg and is available for free on macs, linux and windows) to watch it.  Pyrax mentioned that mpg giles are a bit iffy, so maybe this program might fix that.

All video lan does is opens up videos/songs, albeit it comes with the drivers to use mpg (thats how I view them on my computer  8)  ).

Post back on your thoughts please.

a) are xvid and/or theora cross platform
b) urls please?
c) what do "crappy IP laws" have to do with anything.  Last I checked law and the internet had very little to do with each other.  A little more explanation please?

ogm is good but mkv is supposed to be better ( better handling of subtitles for example ). This is for container file format types. For the codec itself, xvid should be the one you use ( mpeg-4 compatible and open source code ) Theora is more open source but I think the codec itself has worse quality than xvid.

xvid and theora are both (more or less) unencumbered, open formats, supported on all platforms with players for them
xvid is an mpeg-4 asp codec
theora is usually used in an ogg container with vorbis or flac audio

quicktime and realplayer support theora (with the xiph plugins) and probably also support xvid

cool, looks like we've got a few options with mpg.  So I guess its mpg, but if anyone still can't use any of these programs, give me a yell.

At any rate, I will get around to converting the vids ASAP, hopefully starting today.  Hopefully  :P

mpg would be of poor quality ( unless you mean a mpeg 4 file ).

Well, not really poor quality but mpg 1 and 2 are old algorithms and do not compress as much as mpg 4 for example. So with the same bitrate as you are using currently you'll have a worse quality.

Really try the mkv format with Xvid, or if it bothers people, just do an avi file instead with Xvid.

Okay, sounds like AVI is a better option, if Xvid works with it too.  Thanks for that, I prefer AVI files anyway

EDIT:  damnit, the AVI files were way too big...over 600mb for the first one alone...sorry guys, until I get a way to convert them to quicktime or another format, im kinda stuck.  Sorry...
Note: if someone get convert them to a useable format, please contact me.

Yes, as afore mentioned, the d347h website has been updated.  It's been a long wait, and for numerous reasons (work, study, life etc), but its finally done!

For those unfamiliar with the D347H website, we are a small clan focused less on clan wars and more on the creation of content (movies etc) for the community.  A major part of this is our collection of tremulous movies.  We've got all of these available for free download at http://death.botl.au.com.

But this isn't all we have to offer; far from it.  With this latest update, I have tried to include some other things as well: wallpapers, texture packs, pictures and even some games (not all of which are based on tremulous, but they ARE there :P).

Its been a long wait to get it done, but its finally done.  Hope everyone likes it :)

Also, if you're interested in seeing some of our other movies, go to http://youtube.com/undeadwilldestroyall.  There are some other videos not about tremulous, but most of them are based on trem.

Yes, well, between study, work, and the massive storms we've had (which cut out both internet and power) trem time has been rather short :(

But the hols are coming up: time for trem will drastically increase :)
