Torque engine?
« Reply #62 on: February 23, 2007, 12:03:04 am »
Raytray,

Have you tried Legends? It looks like Tribes meets Quake. The Torque engine was the one used for Tribes, no? Is this basically just a standalone freeware version of a Tribes 1+2 amalgam? Any elements of Aerial Assault, Vengeange, Renegades, or any other semi-popular Tribes games or mods? Is the gameplay any good? Any reason to download this and not the free version of Tribes, (other than that Legends seems to be a cooler, non-commercial Tribes for Linux, with somewhat more balanced weapons)?

How does it compare to Starsiege: 2845? SS: 2845 looks like it has some Tribes community support. Have you tried it? It has HERCS! (That's mechs to you non-Starsiege people.)

I wonder how well either of these games play to someone who's actually played (and liked) any of the Starsiege: Tribes games. They don't look or play like Quake. They feel a little different. Bigger, slower, stickier (or surprisingly slipperier), GPU- and connection-dependent, funnier physics, player more like a decal, more CTF & less DM, world more like an Impressionist painting than a Suicidal Tendencies/Iron Maiden/Flotsam&Jetsam album cover, etc. Not better, necessarily; just different. Different engine. Lots of keybinding and game scripting. (If can't place turret = then look up, left/strafe left/retry/repeat; If contact field armoury = open, sell chaingun, light armor, battery pack/buy medium armor, jam pack, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, disc launcher, mines, ammo, close) But I suppose there are a few Trem players with human loadout &  human/alien builder keybinds. I hope there are. I need some.

PlayerOne is always looking to rekindle that first Tribes buzz
and has lots of questions

It's a tribe's clone on the torque engine.  The one's that have tried tribes first then legends tend to say it's a little faster pace.
The Legends community is somewhat small and close knit.

I havn't tried anything tribes related except for Legends, which I felt was amazing. (it's what got me into FPS's)  However I stopped playing Legends when I found W:ET, then I abandoned that for Trem. ;D

I'm such a traitor.

Maybe it's better that way. I was playing Unreal1 and Tribes, then Q2, UT & Tribes, then Q3a:Ta, UT and Tribes, and some Deus Ex & RtCW on the side. I barely had time to wash myself. Mods, forums, chat, clans, scripts, keybinding, ICQ, IM, mIRC, etc. One game is more than enough. But it's never enough until it's too much.  :P I'm looking for one other game besides Trem, preferably something that looks different, too, just for variety.

CodeRED's graphics don't suck but the game sucks.

Could you elaborate on why you thought Alien Arena's gameplay sucks?

It's got quite good weapons, the maps are amazing, and there are over 5 game modes and 10 mutators.

Ok. I just wanted to say I'm reporting back.

What did you find unsatisfactory about it?

Has anyone played Armagetron Advanced?

I'm looking for a new game that'll run on my laptop.

MG used to have a server of that running. Dunno if it's still up.
Stop it. Seriously.

I'm totally into Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE Online. Now I don't know if there are any MMORPGS fans out there but this game isn't quite like the others. If you ever played a game from the SMT series then you should be quite fammiliar with it already. The game is going OB tomorrow so it's still rather new. The most innovative part of the game is the fusion of pets (demons). The game has over 200 different kind of demons and, through fusion, you can get every skill you want on every demon. The game is F2P with Cash Shop items 8)

Dwarven Fortress: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/features.html

I'm guessing the average user here will look at the graphics, blink and close the game but for the people who actually looked up some stories, tutorials and all that, will get unlimited fun out of the game :)

If you count mods for non free games: Fistful of Frags and Synergy are awesome. Also, warsow, nexuix, and hl2: deathmatch.

Well, HL2:Deathmatch is free off Steam, providing you have an ATI card. It's a pity it sucks some major balls.

You can, however, use it as a base for mods, such as Age Of Chivalry (which looks like Mount&Blade, but online).

It's also a pity that all of this post was supporting Vlave. Those bastards,

1. The game is very fun when you play with a group of friends.
2. You can not use it to play mods when you get it for free.
3. If your system can run the game, it is free. Ati and Nvidia cards both get it.

I appear to have missed something. When I went to the HL2: Deathmatch page on Steam it said it was $5 (on sale). I didn't buy it, however. How the hell are you people getting it for free? (If you say one thing about torrents I will personally beat your crotch with a rusted rake.)

/-EDIT-\ lol, Syntac quoted this post.

ATI and Steam partnered up and for ATI to cash in a few more hundred dollars (supposedly), they made it so if you have an ATI card, they'll give you HL2:Deathmatch for free. ATI agreed that Steam (Valve) would get a portion of the money ATI is gaining. Also recently (Or as recent as it gets), they threw in HL2: Lost coast into the mix, even though that so called "game" was free if you had HL2. You will need Steam installed on your PC to get the games though.

Steam didn't bother to shutdown the promotion offer so its still going. I dunno about Nvidia, but if you have an ATI card, heres the site for HL2:Deathmatch:

Found the nVidia offer. (<3 Google)

http://www.steampowered.com/nvidia

/-EDIT-\ Note that it's cover says "Portal: First Slice", but in that little "Also Included" box you got your HL2: Lost Coast and your HL2: Deathmatch.

Portal was a great game, but lacked any replay value.

It gets marked down for that.

It also gets marked down for being a Valve game.

Has anyone heard of Forum Warz? Its basically an RPG-ish game in disguise of a parodic forum. You can choose 5 classes; Troll, Emo, Cam Whore, Hacker and Permanoob, each with their own abilities, traits and skills. Its a game that people like me who often view forums can enjoy, and if your into parody-like RPG games. Its for a Mature audience (17+), so if your a pussy, don't fucking play.

It features in-game currency called Flezz, or if you pay real-world money to get something called Brownie points and waste your cash on items that can give you the upperhand (As of which, you can consider yourself a rich asshole who doesn't have anything better to do with your money). You basically go around to forums fucking them up and turning them into stupid, trolled, off topic wads of crap, and thus gain Flezz and experience points, unlike here, you'll just get flamed and banned.

To kill a forum, you'll have to screw each thread in it. You'll start out as a re-re (noob class) that comes with its own retarded avatar, no matter what you do in the character generator. You start out with two attacks (Bang Helmet on Keyboard and Drool on Keyboard) and once your level one, you can select your own class and choose from a selection of avatars for each class. You do damage on a thread until its dead, AQ style and thats pretty much it. It has its own funny story-line which makes you want you to keep playing, or not. You have Ego (Health) and you can use items while your "battling". It has "Klans", and many more features that I won't go over.

You can say its the best thing since meat-loaf, or its the worst thing since meat-loaf. I like it, you could go try it. Unfortunately for you Player1, Forum Warz has banned your IP address for over-powering and balance issues, and thus you can't play.  :'(

Enough of me advertising for no reason. Once again, it not for everyone. If you like it, yays, if you don''t, shutup and go play something else. You can start your character at:
http://www.forumwarz.com/

(Btw, I'm a Level 2 Emo.  ;D)
