Does hosting a server take up your download limit?

Started by NiTRoX, January 26, 2007, 10:08:32 AM

NiTRoX

title.

I search this question ok but I didn't find anything.

Caveman

Too few information.
Not knowing your "download" limit nor your planned setup, I'll say "Yes".

NiTRoX

No I mean in general regardless of what limit you have.(I have 8GB)

Survivor

You download locational information from the players on your server and are the thus the relay for sending it to all other players. Usage of both Upload and Download.
I'm busy. I'll ignore you later.

Are there any sitess which offer free server hosting or something?

Thorn

28 players seems to take up 250Kilobytes per second at a rate of 15000 on average

NiTRoX

woo thats alot or few?

what program did you use to make both of your siggies thorn? They're cool :)

I can host a server for $20 dollars a month. Some people think that is pretty cheap. My email is danhosler at gmail dot com.

Thats alot. Times that by 8 and you get your real requirment in bits, which is what most isp's measure by.

I didnt make the sig

Shafe

your bandwidth is soley based on number of players and sv_maxrate...

google sv_maxrate.. and you can figure it out.. a good maxrate on your sever is between 10000 and 25000.....

^ nice post number ;)  (69)

Who made it then?

n00b pl0x

hydra made his sig. Do I need to worry about maxrate if I dont have a server?
will sort out my sig, or I will get banned.

HOW DO I SORTED SIG?

You guys are under a ridiculous misconception... A Tremulous/Quake3 game server only requires about 3 or 4 KB/s for gameplay, independent of how many players there are.  If you have sv_allowDownload enabled and are sending maps out to several users then obviously the requirement will be increased.

Furthermore, clients can't make the server, or other clients lagg.  If a client is lagging, it's most likely a problem with the client's connection.  If all cilents are lagging, it's most likely a problem with server's connection.

Things like high RAM/CPU usage also cause higher ping between the server and clients.

A properly configured dedicated host takes very few system resources, including transmission bandwidth.

You host a 30 player server with a hard limit of 4KB/s upstream total and tell me how it works out...

and actually...

sv_allowDownload when not using the redirect is limited by the rate set in sv_maxrate...

You do realise that using the Internet at all will use up part of your download limit, right?

Your ISP doesn't actually track things like "web browsing" versus "downloading a file".  To them, everything you do -- web browsing, downloading, checking your mail, running a peer-to-peer client, playing any online game, or running any online game server -- is all just "traffic".

So yes, running any game server will use up at least part of your download limit.  Actually, it'll use up more of your upload limit than the download one, but it will use up a bit of both.  But you're using it up just by accessing these forums, or by playing as a client.

It's all about how much traffic the server generates.  That's based on how busy your server is -- more players connected for more time = more usage.  And even then, you have to put that in perspective with what your actual download limit is.  Running a server for a weekend probably won't use up your limit.  Running it for a whole month might.  Or it might not.  Again, depends on how busy it is, and how high your limit is.

Caveman

Nice first post, repeating what was already stated.

I suspected that the original poster had a misconception that downloading was an activity with a special limit all its own, because ISPs just call it your "download limit" and leave it at that.

Amidst all the chatter about how much bandwidth Trem uses, it was never explicitly stated that "download limit" means traffic limit -- only that "yes, Trem uses up part of your download limit".

But if one does not properly explain "download limit", then a user is left mistakenly thinking that they're going to "download" too much data and run out.  It may not be apparent that they're using their "download limit" all the time, just at a lesser rate than when doing a real download.

I know this is obvious to us, but I suspected it was not apparent to the original poster.  I read all the posts, noted that omission, and dealt with it.  It so happened to be the moment I decided to un-lurk.  I'm sorry if that somehow offends you; that wasn't my intent.

I do. And... ehhh I guess I'm using calculations based on statistics from several years ago (5+).. So nevermind.  I can so how a server can easily use 250 KB/s. I just don't keep track of instantaneous transfer speed.  My server only seems to lag for people in other continents. >_>
