It was probably said three years ago, but I just really started playing Tremulous yesterday. So today I just want to say thanks to the people who brought me this cool, free, standalone, cross-platform (yet readily available in multiple formats), Quake-esque, Gloom-inspired, TeamFortress-meets-Tribes-meets-AvP game. It's not easy. But it sure is fun.

Now, time for the n00b questions.
HUMAN:

Just what do you have to shoot the egg with to destroy it? It seemed harder to destroy than the overmind.

What weapons are most useful against which enemies? I know, play the game and find out.

I jumped on an empty server and started building, and I know I should practice deconning to learn to move base, and I'm reading the base location and strategy stickies.
I've played some one-on-one, and one-on-two as the lonely marooned builder/scout.
I jumped into somefully populated servers, and tried to get some cool weapons, and to learn to make do with a rifle and running backwards (I played the Q3a SP campaign/ladder).

So, build and maintain turrets, and shoot little aliens with little guns. Then, destroy alien structures and kill builders on sight. Kill little aliens and run from big ones while shooting. Even a blaster can destroy an acid tube. Save rifle rounds for battles. Short range weapons seem good for destroying alien structures. What else?

Oh, by the way, thanks devs. It plays like Quake. Sweet. Robust multiplayer and all the classic, expected artifacts. Same wallpaper textures, to assure playability across various hardware/software configuations. Nice. Very nostalgic, yet original homage to all the cool parts of all the games I already played and liked, and yet it's still Quake.

Also, the Gloom links are really cool. Any thoughts of having a mini-mech in future iterations? Vehicles/flying aliens? Plasma/gauss/laser turrets & gas/glue/slime trappers? Powerups? CTF? Third faction? Typical n00b, clamoring for more after four hours playing time.

eternally grateful until the shine wears off,
PlayerOne

Yout have to shoot the bottom of it.

In general chaingun + battlesuit works good against anything goon and up, it also works decently against mauraders.
Pulse is good for everything mostly, even against buildings.
Shotgun is good for goons and up if you're low on cash, just stay out of range of their claws/jaws.

My personal favourite is the Battlesuit and Lasgun.
BUT, this combination is only useful if you stick within the perimeter of you base, and just chip in, and fire at goons and tyrants.
Youre safe, and will quickly deplete their health.

Another tiP;
Cheapest weapons are not necessarily the worst.
Hell, painsaw can be more effective than luci (Lucifer cannon) if used correctly.
It deals 200 units of damage PER SECOND of contact with any object.
That = Tyrant down in 2 secs !  :P
Its only 100 creds too !
Its very difficult to master though, and dont recommend using without a bsuit.
Oh, another tip:
Dont buy anything in S1.
Why ? Your cranium is exposed in S1 due to a lack of helmet, and this = A lot of deaths due to dretch bites.
Wait until S2, buy armour + helmet, and then buy a weapon.

In S1, just use your rifle.

Ive got a hell of a load more tips, but ill post them another time-
its 12.20am, and im rather tired.
For now, im retreating to my hovel :hovel:
lawl, people still play Tremulous ?

Here is your one warning on this topic.  Most of these requests/suggestions have been made ad nauseam and you will be flamed severely for making such suggestions in the future.  Not by me but by just about everyone else :P  You get a free pass this time though :D

You're in luck though, there is a lot to learn about the game, so it should keep you having fun and being challenged for quite a while :)

You can grab maps at
https://mercenariesguild.net/base

There are LOTS of them, but the vast majority are not played on most servers.  Most in that directory are betas and are just for checking out :)
You can get the MG Map Pack for almost all of them.  Or you can just get the more well known maps.

I'd recommend getting Ancient Remains, UTCSB2, ATCSZAlpha, procyon, flap.
You'll find others you need or want but you can play that by ear.

Also, in your Options turn on auto download.  It may be slow but you won't get kicked.  Get TJW's build of tremulous, which would allow http downloads through the game with are MUCH FASTER (not to mention it has bug fixes).  Trust me you want this.  http://trem.tjw.org/backport/  Follow the instructions EXACTLY or you will be posting here asking for help and people will tell you to follow the instructions EXACTLY :P :D

Have fun!!

If you wanna kill lots of dretches, use massdriver in S1 ;)

disregard this advice!
light armour saves you from 1 hit kill pounces and limits the damage of non headbites. There are still some who do not score headbites with every bite (you can decrease the amount of headshots by jumping just before getting bitten and thus allowing the lightarmour to do it's job)

Potent combos in stage 1 are lasgun+ armour for smaller bugs, armour + shotgun for bigger bugs or light armour + rifle for your general needs. It can however also be wise to save up your credits for lightarmour + helmet + gun in s2.

No, he's right. Unless you have a real need to prevent one hit pounce deaths, don't buy anything at all at stage 1. Remember that one hit kill pounce doesn't work if you have larmor, but that a few milliseconds later the pounce will usually be followed by a headchomp, rendering the fact that you survived the first hit moot.

At stage 1, you stay alive by keeping the aliens far away from you.

Well i guess that is really dependant on playstyle.... I find Light armour very useful but then again i mostly run around hunting goons with larmour+ shotty in s1. Those few ms might can be enough to get off the last shot(s) needed to kill the goon. At stage 1 you get to s2 by killing the aliens :D, sometimes you have to get close to do this. Anyway if you are low on cash in s1 by all means don't buy light armour and save up for when i matters in s2.

S1: Armour + Shotgun or Mass Driver, depending on the situtation.
S2: Armour + Helmet + Pulse Rifle.
S3: Armour + Helmet + Pulse Rifle or Lucifer Cannon.

The rest of the guns suck. The Lasgun is useless since they made it carry so little ammunition.

LArmor is useful when you intend to attack the alien base, or an adv basi, or an adv mara :D In fact, larmor is very important to reduce the amount of damage from the acid tubes.

Light armour also halves your sprint stamina drain and allows you to move faster on alien creep.
If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!

Unless said 3-4 chainsuits are of the general inclination to 'spray and pray' the thing in front of them. Nothing kills such a group faster than a tyrant who willingly leads you on a merry chase while the 1-2 n00b chainsuits pump your ass full of lead trying to hit it.
