WIP: Alien model
« on: February 23, 2007, 05:42:19 am »

This is a rather early shot of mr.nice. The lower jaw is bifurcated, with each half being a two-part pincer arm used to grab targets. Then a tentacle with piercing spikes thrust forwards from the back of the mouth to do friendly things like suck vital organs out. Think "xenomorph" then think "graboid" from the film Tremors. I'm aiming for a body somewhere between a :marauder: and a :dragoon: but rather large, a little smaller than a :tyrant:

It's my first ever attempt at modeling, so there's probably rather allot of work to be done before it goes anywhere. I wanted to learn how to use Wings3D, and it was easy enough to have done this in about 10 hours over last three days (starting from a cube).

Reading Blender animation tutorials now ;)

Ooh yeah, I forgot to ask: What kind of polycount is a sensible maximum for an alien model?

Pretty cool! As long as you don't texture it red or blue you won't have it look like an existing alien.

Also ... if your alien needs a home, Balance mod is available. :)

Impressive work, I downloaded wings #D give it a shot, but dont the models have to be saved as MD3's or something like that? I thought 3Ds max was the only program you could use

OMFG
I tried using Wings 3D today, how did you do that??
Anyway, Im making a truck like the UT2K4 one on Wings. Its started shaping up.

Then Ill make more vehicles.

And a simple alien, I shall call him Blocky and he will be my friend.

Thank you all.

By RTFM ;)

Basically, I started with a cube, set one face as a virtual mirror then extruded, subdivided and resized to make the body, then did the same for the legs and mouthparts.

Cool, the ManiaDrive and UltimateStunts devs are looking for more vehicle models ;)

Select Blocky, press S 8)

Anyway, progress is slow at the moment as I'm revising for the May exams. I'll update this thread when any significant development happens.

Why? The basilisk model is probably the best model in Trem.

Can you actually animate models from Wings?
I dont think you can.

And then sadly u and I have been wasting our time, I hope not...

True. Wings is purely a subdivision modeler. The models must be exported to another program to be animated (Blender, 3DS, etc...) There are several common formats so this isn't a problem.

Really! Oh well, Ive already switched to blender, but my truck looks like a wee jeep, looks pretty shitty too. Its small, and blocky. But thatll change. I cant make it too big, other wise it wont be able to go in any existing maps.
Ive still got to work out source code for it...
So, Trem sc uses C, right?

So far it looks like a two seater with a driver and gunner. The gunner sits beside driver and controls the gun mounted via tripod on back. I suppose other players will jump on to hitch a ride.

The model looks fantastic. I gess the polycount is somewhat near current marauderer. I look foward to play with it.
What does this alien of your's do? Every alien so far seem to have some speciality.
Idea:
No Wallwalk (i can't imagine four legged alien to crawl on walls).
Jump needs to be hold to jump but has charge like dragoon pounce but goes directly upwards EXTREMELY HIGH(used to take out jetpackers when you can't reach them with goons).
Primary attack basic clawing with damage pit more than current marauderer.
Secondary needs to be charged by holding it for while then would do extreme damge when released on maxium charge (instant kill from head) but takes time to do same again so missing is not an option if you want to survive after. Uses the tentacle jaws and has bit longer range than claws.

Pretty good, although i wouldn't recommended the tentacle thing, maybe for the adv version of it.
