City Map idea

Started by Xabiar, March 08, 2007, 02:33:03 AM

Xabiar

Are there any ideas for a city map.  If not heres one to develop on.

Aliens control the sewers to begin with.  Humans control upper city.  Maybe have a crash site for a meteor or ship.  If it isnt a small city then maybe place blockades of tanks or cars.  Maybe have some civilian affects like torn up homes, dead civilians, or electronics.

sounds a lot like urbanp2
can't find a thread about it though

_Equilibrium_

take an idea from Halo 2's "turf" map. that seems like a good start.

Lava Croft

Go make the map, instead of talking about it.

Xabiar

i cant make maps, i was basically born with that defect.  So i try to make ideas in order to help ppl.  (Why would I be giving out my ideas if I could do it?)

Laziness.

One problem lies in the size of the doors. Unless you've got a totally blown up city(ww2 style) with chunck of houses taken out and blasted up doors in which a tyrant would fit.(Don't forget that maras are actually larger then a human, so making traditional doors won't allow aliens to go around very much.)
Furthermore, unless you restrick the air field, you'll have jettards hidding in teh air, and probably balconies, where even goons might have a hard time reaching.
Thinking about teh amount of details too, won't happen really.

Maltagearion

I tried this, the thing is unless you have an invisible ceiling or something jettards and wallwalkers are extremely difficult to kill.

Xabiar

I see what all u r sayin, no i'm not lazy, but i was askin for that one.  The city would be semi-blown up from debris, but there would be some smaller inaccesible rooms to the big guys.

Lava Croft

Usually, before someone has the position that just an idea gets other people excited and working, they have at least produced something substantial.

Xabiar

wow lava, im sorry but u r a pessimist

I realize that i havent done anything, but face it, i suk, if i could do it i would

Also i'm not tryin to get ppl enormously excited, but say,"yea that sounds cool"  It was the only map i could think of that hasnt really been done yet

Mantra

You may not be good at maping, but you should be able to take a pencil and some graph paper and make a basic layout of the map. Lets say corridors and such, plan the streets, position of ramps and/or stairs. Blown up walls and such.
Use a basic square to represent a tyrant size hall and mark anything smaller using a set size, then mark it and state what the mark means, ie: square being size of a dretch.

Just providing an idea isin't enough really.

If you have some talent in texturing, you can put yourself up for it.
There's a lot you can do, other then the actual modelling.

Save the AOL speak for your friends and start working with GtkRadiant.

LinuxManMikeC

I've already been working on an idea for a city map.  Been on the back burner for about a month though.  Going to be my first with all custom textures.  Very aware of the jetpack issues, and hopefully my ideas for balancing that will work.  Nothing new to me in this thread.

Xabiar, I'm still in the process of learning a lot of this stuff myself.  The tools aren't that hard to learn.  Now if you lack in artistic skill, oh well, but you could still flesh out the base structure for others to work on.  Besides, once you get started you might find talent you never knew you had.  All you really did in this post is say, "hey, make a city map".  No help at all.  Go make something, even if it sucks, you are being productive.

this doesnt seem like the most cliched map idea ever. *sarcasm sold seperately*
will sort out my sig, or I will get banned.

HOW DO I SORTED SIG?

Shadowgandor

well, it is cliched but not done yet in tremulous, so why not?

Raytray

Why not instead of a city, downsize it and make a mall?

The problem with a mall is that, for it to look decent and believable, you need an absurd amount of props. Shirt racks, benches, tons of shelves with stuff on them, plants, etc etc.

Unless you make it an abandoned mall. But then, the wide, long corridors and dead-end shop entrances would cause some gameplay problems.

It is doable, but it is definitely a challenge.

In a city you probably want cars, litter, plants, telephone poles, buildings, etc., etc.

True that. Which is why I'm not going to make this map :P

TinMan

Look into the Action Quake maps, they had some great city maps.
