What's most important in your server code?
« on: April 15, 2007, 05:16:43 am »
As a server operator (assuming you are one), which of these is most important to you in the code running on your server?
What's next important after that? Yada yada. And why? You know the drill.

Edit: Stupid poll question doesn't support bbcode.

The latest bugfixes. I swear I'll take the time to find out how to trigger the Spawn is NULL bug in vanilla servers once and simply crash any server which isn't fixed yet. I see no other way to make lazy admins fix their crappy servers so newbies stop whining about bugs which have been fixed months ago.
If my answer to your problem doesn't seem helpful, it means I won't help you until you show some effort to fix your problem yourself!
1.2.0 release's been delayed for 5:48:00 already because of stupid questions.

"Stability and Security" come from "The latest Development Code" which has "the latest bug fixes," so I'm not sure which to vote for. I wrote "latest bug fixes" because that seems the most direct, I guess.

But that's not to say I don't also add a bunch of patches. If you already have to run the backport patch, you might as well add whatver else people enjoy for gameplay. Most people are used to TJW's 1.1 server qvm, but if you want the latest fixes to that, you need to run svn + backport + pounce fix patch + separate out the poison patch and apply it + SD modes. When you're already 4 patches to the wind, why not add 5 more :).

On my server, I run my own svn-based homebrewed code. It is where I test my code. But I am more interested in bug fixes than new features. If I weren't running my server primarily for that purpose (and for the secondary purpose of testing new maps), I would be more interested in running stable, consistent code. That would mean infrequent updates, only including bug fixes, and usually several at once, that I had already tested and scrutinized separately.

"The latest development code" is probably mostly untested and might not have so many bugs fixed as new bugs. "The latest bug fixes" are probably mostly in svn or not tested enough to make it. (And sometimes, bug fixes simultaneously break other things.) "Stability and security" probably only means the code that has been most scrutinized and best tested. It includes very few new features.

You have to maintain the code. If you have the time and patience, a few extra patches isn't a big deal. But it is almost inevitable that when something breaks everything breaks.

Unmolested official code is shit, its bugged, and it sucks... Trem would be nothing without TJW's mod and all of them people fixing it...

"Stability and security"
Stability of course, it just does not pay to have the server crash :)
(Even tho it kinda funny when server crash due to the 1999'er Name-Bug)
Security is less an issue, as long as the server itself does not accept uploads nor runs unchecked pk3...

"The latest bug fixes"
That would be fine, but I'd rather see backward compatibility, so that no backporting would be needed. Not all server-owner are in acceptance of the changes that are in svn, like nerfed poison, slower turrets, changed reach of alien asf...

Undeferenced, I'd suggest you ask the owners/admins of the running servers directly, what patches they are running and why they do so.
To my knowledge there is nearly no server running pure svn nor standard packaged server.

Those are not in SVN yet.
