Alien Crosshair (Screenies and Mockups)
« on: May 02, 2007, 06:52:22 am »
So I made an alien crosshair, you might have read about it in the "what do you want to see" thread.

Here's what it looks like at full resolution:

Here's what it looks like in game (I made a 64x64 tga of it)

Kinda crappy, eh? Oh yeah, and hahaha @ Janook ;)

Here are some mockups I made in the GIMP

Here the image isn't scaled

Here it's scaled 75%

Here it's scaled 50%

Here it's scaled 25%

What do you think? I think it looks pretty bad-ass at 50%. Does the engine support larger crosshairs, with alpha channel? If not, could it be made to easily?

I think it is useless. The ones included already suffice.

Well aren't we a cheery bunch this evening.

Sure the present crosshairs suffice, but I'm the type that's not always happy with white walls, white bread and rice and beans for supper 7 nights a week. Be all that you can be, caveman. Strive do to better than just "it suffices"

Or use whatever crosshair you prefer. It's a game, right? ;)

I could fix you up a hud that uses it at any side you want,
just make it into tga with a transparent background.

note this is a hack.. it's a not a real crosshair
it's just drawing it to the middle of your screen as part
of the alien hud. (for self-deluded people: no, not
a hack like a wall hack. it's a hack in the proper
sense of the term... a workaround if you will.)

won't work on pure servers that don't have the file
loaded though.

it takes up too much space, up until now i've used chomper's xhair (the default xhair scaled down to about 2/3 of the default one), but i've been wanting to replace it with the dot used on the alien hud for aliensense scaled to about 1/3 or less. anything more just takes up space and blocks your view for no reason.

I cant understand how a alien crossair would be cheating. Like human crossairs it just chows you the middle of the screen.

I have no problems with the normal alien crossair. I use them myself.
I put the chompers code into the HighFisibility hud :D

i don't think anyone on this thread was honestly saying that an alien crosshair is considered cheating.

stop it! alien crosshairs are in svn now. however some admins may still consider them as cheating since not everyone has xhairs in 1.1.0.
and they are right!
You gain advantage over other players by using crosshairs It is not like a bind or anything. You create/dl a cfg file and get it read. so stop pretending it is not a hack and like a console command or bind. IT IS THE FIRST STEPS OF USING AN AIMBOT. AND IT IS CHEATING IN 1.1.0

uhhh... yeaaaaah...so what do you think of my mockups?

The reason I made them is because I feel the standard crosshair is too mechanical. This one's more 'organic'. It has a bit more of an 'alien' feel to it than the old one.

I don't use them. Well, I have a custom hud installed but it mainly changes the look of the human HUD. I don't play often with aliens themselves (I find it much more fun to kill aliens than to play with them :P) so the extra crosshair in that case is minor.

Timbo said custom huds with added crosshair are OK so unless you think your opinion is worth more than is, using them with 1.1.0 is NOT cheating. The same that some specific server ban lucy spam, they can ban usage of custom huds, as stupid as both of those rules are but in no way should that be considered a general rule!

Well actually, I have to agree with f0rqu3...
He has a point! I never played with alien crosshairs and never will untill it's built-in in the game!
It IS an advantage over other players, just like aimbotting, etc!
If you guys go on like this Trem won't be fun anymore for the honest people.

I like your idea, but the design's just too chunky. It should really only be at 25 to 33%, and it looks too thick then. It does look nice enough at 50%, but I think anyone would get tired of it pretty quick.

So either slim it down or maybe make it less dense, and you've really got something cool going for you.

And 120 FPS is an advantage over players with crappy computers. 20 ms ping is an advantage other what you can get with a 56k modem, "advanced" binds are also a great advantage! For example, I have that great bing that allows me to toggle the jetpack with a simple keypress, without using the inventory! Talk about cheating.

Let's start cutting back on all those advantages builtin the game. First, the game will now only handle 2 mouse buttons at best. No custom binds will be available, only those you can create using the ingame input configuration will be allowed ( for information, it means you get a shortcut for the medkit and maybe to buy ammo but that's all ). Next, the game will be limited to 25 FPS at most, and anybody that cannot reach that point will be kicked. And then, every Mac OSX and Linux user will be required to run a resident program that will eat all available CPU and HDD ressource at random to simulate the stupid antivirus Windows players have to use.

And there are still many more things we should lock down before users start exploiting them!

ug.. i was afraid that would happen people
are argueing about alien crosshairs again...

look... tremulous is an open source game
it was designed be customizable so that anyone
could contribute... thus the hud customizability
without violating purecheck.

if you truely believe it's an advantage,
go grab one for yourself... it's pubicly avaliable.
the devs obviously thought it improved gameplay
because it's in the svn and thus isn't a mod
which makes gameplay worthless or pointless
like an aimbot or a wallhack.

i use the following defintion of a cheat in gaming
for a customizable game like tremulous:
1) any direct modification to the redering engine
which is desgined to create a gameplay advantage.
2) anything which causes enacts actions for your in-game
avatar or changes or modifies the controls while
taking into acount game state information.  (binds
are blind... they only do what you say.  they cannot read
someone's location like an aimbot.)
3) anything that requires breaking a cheat protection.
(breaking purecheck, changing cheat locked cvars, etc...)

to people who customize:
if you make a really good mod or script which you think
enchances gameplay you should release it to the public...
it is the spirit of open source.  trying to keep it to only
yourself to keep an "advantage" is not only silly,
but makes you look stupid.

if some admins want to try
to ban them on their servers,
that is their progative...
but it is silly and foolish
to make rules which you can't
enforce. it only undermines
your potition and authority.
they also need to give fair warning
in thier MMOD.  my upcoming
avalon mod has a cvar to disable
the alien crosshair if you should
desire to do so either in
general or to play on a certian server.

note themetal:
silly me i released after my last
post that as long as your making
a mod which can't be used in purecheck,
might as well just change the weapon
definitions for aliens to use your xhair
instead.. you can change size it there,
but it must be square.

¨Make it huge, like the 75% one, but make it much more transparent and faint-looking. The bigger it is, the cooler it is and trem is more about reflexes and quick thinking than seeing absolutely everything.

Back to the alien crosshair cheating issue for a minute, how is this cheating? The crosshair is pointless for melee, as long as you're looking at the human, you're basically going to land a hit, you need to aim above the head for a headshot with most aliens, so it doesn't help in that aspect. It basically just shows where the center of the screen is. That's useless. Any experienced player knows where the center of the screen is and is not helped by this crap.

Make a an advanced goon crosshair and config for it (to display at non-shrunk resolution) and I'll love you. As for the crosshair you just made, I personally like thin lines for pinpointing, not bloody blobs that I can't see through.
