A Guide to the Marauder
Dedicated to player1
The marauder is a very versatile class, able to take on single humans, grouped humans, and human bases. The key to the Marauder's usefulness is it's jump, which can be used to "bounce" off walls, thus making you a very hard target. In addition, the advanced version has a lighting attack, which is capable of chaining to multiple targets.

Breakdown by numbers
Hp: 150
Adv hp: 175
bite damage:40
headbite damage: 80
lighning damage: 80-something-33

Walljumping
The marauder is capable of using it's jump to bounce off walls, thus making it a very hard target to hit. When walljumping, go from one wall to the next, passing above any humans heads. if you ever find yourself on the ground, jump in the air, towards a human, or away, depending on your fight or flee instinct. walljumping is aimed to confuse the enemy, and to make a harder target of yourself. Many times, the humans shoot their base or each other trying to hit you while walljumping

Attack Strategies.
Whenever you come across any humans, be sure to pay attention to the weapons or armor that they are carrying. naked humans only need three bites, and since the repeat rate of the mara bite is fast, don't even bother to walljump, just go straight for the kill.
rifle-easy prey
painsaw-easier than the rifle, if possible
shotgun-these guys can be tough. if their wearing light armor and a helmet, be very careful. it takes less than three shots to kill you. dont stop moving, present a harder target. never jump straight at them, unless you like the taste of lead. try to go from wall to wall, and make it a higher priority not to get shot than to bite. the fight may last longer than normal if the human has a good aim. hopefully, the little bights will add up, and you'll get him. if he doesn't have a helmet, dont bother with that, and go straight for the head. go for them when they reload, and they'll probably run out of ammo if it lasts for a while
lasgun-dangerous grouped with more people, do walljump if he has helmet+light armor, otherwise, just go for him
mass driver-can be dangerous if one chases you, because you'll probably be under 38/39 hp at this point. if alone, go for them.
chaingun-go for the head. dont run in front of them and hold down left mouse button, or youll just get every bullet. walljump around them
flamer-just dont stand in the flames. leave him alone if he fires it everywhere, hell just head back to base for hp and ammo.
pulse rifle-the rounds are really slow, so just walljump and you wont have much trouble
lucifer cannon-see shotgun
Quote from: "benmachine"
Most skilled players, especially with a lucifer cannon, expect you to jump over their head and so they shoot up in advance. With a luci this will often mean instant death, so don't be predictable.

Armor
light armor-go for the head. it just takes two bites
helmet-curse these guys. go for whatever presents itself. if they dont have light armor, the torso
battlesuit-your going for a bsuit with a mara? ok, go for the head

Strategies-
jump on their heads, above their heads, around their heads, near their heads, to the side of their heads. seriously. go for the head

if you see a group, jump like crazy and look down. bite their heads, and try your best not to get hit much

if they have no armor, don't even bother jumping (unless they have a luci or shotty, those things kill) just walk up to them and bite their torso three times. no problem. (note, only applies to singular people)

jump, jump, jump. i cant stress this enough people

it can help if you have backup against a group, such as, another mara

don't jump straight for them. you'll just get shot in the face

if the human base is abandoned, or the defenders are distracted, jump over the turrets and stand on top the reactor. bite away!

Do NOT take on groups of three and above expecting the whole group to die. unless they're all naked riflemen.

Naked humans take 2 bites, one in head one somewhere else.

I find that when using the mara, i die a lot less than using a goon. despite having fewer kills, im pretty sure my kill-death ratio is better with a mara. typically, if i find myself against a lone hummie, i use hit and run tactics, getting a swipe, then running, doubling back, swiping again, and so on, making full use of regen (sometimes, 10 hp is what pulls you through). Running/Luring is good because it pulls the human farther and farther from his base, giving me ample time to abuse/finish him when he realizes that his HP is actually getting low. If im getting more than im giving, i can simply use the mara's speed to get away (hopefully). poison helps even more. The mara is also underestimated, a lone pulse might be fearfull of chasing a goon, but will have no qualms chasing a mara. I play on servers with 20 players max, preferably 6-12 though, and i dont think the hit and run tactic would be as effective on a larger server. Beware the good MD...
Just my 2 cents.

and good lasgun(eg. Dimi)
try not to enter rooms with too much space: you wont ever have chance to do a wall jump and you will be a very easy target whan jumping(talking about fight agains most of speed shooting gunz-but good luci or pulse can also be deadly) Its an error that most players make

Adv. Mara has a electric shock: you can use it whan you dont want to go too near to humie(luci, chain, shootie) also its good way of getting some turrets, but not too many.

I love mara. I probably play it more than anything.
The thing to remember is you can get away every time almost if you just pay attention.
Attack, when you feel a bit low get out of there or at least go until they don't bother following..
you can heal a bit and be back on them before they get back to base most often.
Chain lightening isn't an efficient way to kill anyone really but it can freak groups out and make them more vulnerable for dretch headbites/waste medkits. Its also good for chainsaws though the well timed jump and headslash will be the better way to kill them.

If you hear a lasgun get the heck out of there. Out of all weapons that is the worst one to attack as a marauder imho because it severely robs you of your ability to get away from even the lower skilled players.
Also battlesuites with chainguns can most often be a waste of time.
MD is case by case. Most often people won't hit you that much but occasionally you get someone who can really use the MD and then you are in the same spot as the lasgun.
You can take on pretty much anything else though with the right strategy. Get isolated people to waste their ammo and close in when they find themselves low.
Also being a marauder you become very conscious of the ceiling...  a certain map you may run into has stupid hanging crap on the ceiling which makes it impossible for you to jump down the hall when you need to.

crouch-shotty works against maras quite well too, lightning doesnt do much damage to hel+arm and a clip of shotgun will finish off mara. Rifle is another solution, 1-2 clips and he is down, thats about 15 seconds to dodge, not a big problem if you are not in vents.

I think every class, really just takes practise, and good strategy. For some ppl such as myself I just can't make a headbite with the mara or grab, when using the basilisk. This is why i stick to the dretch/goon combo, although mara is useful even if you not amazing, such is the case with me. :)

here's a couple of demos of beerbastard using mara.

Quote from: "Beerbastard"

If anyone cares, i had a good round as a mara and I actually got it on demo.
Here it is. I hope it might help others who don't know how to mara. I don't claim to be the best, but I know I am better then average.

That one no one dodges very well but it still shows technique.

there's some pretty good stuff in there.

If u loose your target in a crowd of humans, i use the lighting on the closest it usually will hit the one you lost. Only if they were almost dead though, otherwise keep chomping. Using lighting has a cool down time before you can chomp again.

well not neccessarily, I know a couple of players, notably Asshole, who has the ability to kills humans full on. His recorded kill is 10 humans in one go and everytime, he can take on everyone with head shots in 1 bite. Wel that is how he claims it....

Just don't play on buggy unadminstrated servers that still allow the double-slash :)

one of the rare times in my life, I actually agree with caveman. You see, Mdriver only plays at school for about 30 min. sessions each day at most if he doesn't get kicked off the computer by the administrator. Apparently he doesn't like playing tremulous at home.
