OK.
Idea.
Tremulous let we with the normal eninge.
And make in few years when the eninge is free a Tremulous 2 with Starship Trooper Eninge (Quake 4 Eninge + Swarm-Eninge). Cool Graphic, nice Physik and with the Swarm-Eninge thousand of enemies can be stand in the same level without lags you need only 2 GHz i think. With the Swarm Eninge make a Single Player Campaign.
One human with many weapons against thousands of Aliens =). Or over internet a Group of humans against thousands aliens.
Nice Idea.
The Tremulous Developer must then only develope two games at the same time.
(Need bigger Community i think.)
Tremulous 1 with Quake 3 eninge for Player with old PC's and Tremulous 2 for Players with 2 Year old PC's or up-to-date PC's.
But for the Game Starship Troopers you need only an PC from 2004.

The Tremulous developer have time.
I say in FEW years when the Eninge is for free.
Then the Tremulous Community is death (what i don't think) or the Tremulous development community is 400% bigger =). Humans over the world work for new Tremulous game. =) Open Source Game with open source eninge in few years. =)

They're prob not going to hire new devs, seeing how they're doing this in their free time if I'm right.
Heck, if I'm right on this part as well, then they even lost devs compared to the initial release, atleast I've never heard of them after the initial release.

I hope they don't lost Devs.
They can make a notice at Trem homepage.
"We search developers. Please contact us if you have interesting and experience".
This notice.

The Devs probably have The Great Escape reminiscent tunnels linking all their houses/caves/castles/forts/evilgeniuslairisland/submarines/spaceships together. But I think a few Devs have floated off in their hot-air balloon fortresses.

400% developers?

Karma is those numbers underneath your name, and you can raise or lower karma of other people, depending on if you like them or not, or they have done "good" or "bad" things.

As well as this, Karma is completely Off Topic.

the tremulous devs r probably burnt out after making trem work.....

it could almost be a completely new game, because the whole code would have to be reworked for a new engine....

People, stop dreaming about something that is never going to happen. All this talk about changing to another engine is totally devoid of any respect for the current game.

Lava you are too pessimistic... Maybe they love Trem so much they have wet dreams about Trem becoming so beautiful by today's standards that it'd wash off crysis from the top.

Tho' I completely agree with you that it will never happen. :(

There are free, open source 3D engines like Ogre or IrrLicht (my personal favourite), but I doubt that a new engine should be implemented. Changing the engine implies reprogramming the whole game. I would vote for the keeping of Q3A engine (although bumpmapping and specular features would be welcome).

What about switching to ogre or irrlicht?  They are both free, open-source graphics engines.  I would go get links, but I am too lazy.

While we are thinking about it...

What about implementing a full-scale physics engine?  There is at least one pretty decent, free, open-source one.  Then we could kill teh hitboxes!!!

Because the ioquake3 engine is fine. There are engines like(dare I say) XreaL that are Quake 3 with updated renderers. Problem is, XreaL is dog slow at the moment.

And the CPUs. Rigid body dynamics (Bullet et al) may be feasible in terms of resource usage, but integrating it with the current engine will be difficault. Then comes the influence of different physics model on the game. The settings, weapons and balance are tweaked for the Q3 physics model, and will need substantial reworking.

I'm afraid that I've opened a Pandora's box. The actual engine is fine. I suggested those engines as open-source examples merely. They should not be implemented. Q3A is fine and couldn't be better.

Gee, Not like this discussion is going to kill anyone.  :P
Atleast it is good reading, and imagining trem with imba phys'sz or graf'x is fun.

Physics engines are slow and Tremulous already is pretty CPU-intensive. Not a good idea before a good rewrite of the renderer so it actually uses your videocard instead of your CPU.

R u serious Lava? Ok this engine needs LOTS and LOTS of improvements.... I just hope devs will release next version before they are done with everything they can come up with. It has already taken lots of time. Cant we get at least most of what has been done by now?
