Beerbastard's Guide To the Marauder
rev 1

Prologue about me: My screename is Beerbastard, me and Beerbitch run clan [OPP].(Mostly me, he is older than I am and has more responsibilities.  I have been using the Marauder quite successfully since before unlagged was popular.  I consider myself an above average Marauder.  This guide represents my opinions. Do not flame, constructive criticism is fine. If you don't think I am a good mara, I don't give a shit.  I wrote this in response to multiple questions from players I know about using the mara. It forced me to look at what I was doing. (Explaining what your doing, when your just doing it not thinking about it can be hard I did my best) I am hoping to add some video links to demonstrations of the attacking techniques, and some common jumps used for escaping. I am not promising them though.I will keeping adding revisions as long as I find stuff to add.

General idea behind Marauder
: The Marauder bite does less damage than a goon, it also has less life. The strength of the Marauder lies in its dodging, distracting, and the ability to escape. The regeneration of aliens makes it easy to hit and run. Remember not dieing is as important as killing.

Dodging: The mara can bounce off wall by holding the jump key when you hit a wall. This means that you can change your trajectory while in the air making you harder to hit.  Just being in the air doesn't make you a harder target, sometimes it does the opposite. It makes you a predictable target unless you use the walls. When attacking from above by jumping over the head, the target will have to keep turning around to hit you. This makes you harder to hit.

Distracting: Try this sometime, take a mara and have you fellow teammates goons fallow you. When you attack jump over the humans. A lot of humans will try and track the mara because it was the first thing they saw.  This means they are looking up(or even behind them) when your goon friends who fallowed you attack.

Escape: One of the best reasons to choose mara is the ability to escape is even greater than that of a goon. You can even take corners at higher speeds than most other aliens by turning sideways before you land.(Like strafing around the middle island on atcs) While kills are great, they only matter when compared to your deaths. Deaths matter because it gives the other team credits, and stage kills.

Movement: This fits in with escape, but movement is helpful when working within turret range. It is harder for a mara to get stuck by turrets, also when its jumping you can easily dodge turrets. Even long enough to finish off that pesky runner.

Attacking
: Now we get to the part most want to know. How do you kill with a mara?  I will describe different attack methods I seem to use. I don't know what they would/should be called so I might be using my own names.

Stand Up
: This attack is when your standing right next to a human, you jump straight up(Or close to it) and aim straight down. (Sometimes resulting in a minor stall on their head, this means more head bites before your on the ground again)

Jump Over: This is when your taking jumps over someone. Some have asked me how I hit someone in the head in a jump over. They say they feel out of range when at the peak of the jump. I am not sure if this is true, but it might take a more precise aim(directly down).  My tactic is to hit them on the way up, or land on their head on the way down when you haven't hit the peak of your jump. (You don't have to jump directly over, you can aim sideways while jumping next to them)

Ground attack: If you are always jumping over your enemy, they might catch on. So you can switch it up by staying on the ground, aiming really high up for a head shot.(Looks like your hitting above their head). Be sure to move left and right also.

The sit
: Jump on their head, sit their aiming down, spamming bite. This is easiest when they are against a wall or in a corner. If ff is on, anyone shooting to help out their teammate has a big chance of helping you kill him.

Two good tips for a marauder :

1. Use S to gauge your jumps to fall on/behind/in front of your ennemy.
2. When grounding, aim a bit higher than head to actually do a real headshot.

Nice guide btw ;D

You don't have to hold down the jumpkey to perform a walljump. Just tapping the jumpkey before hitting the wall is sufficient.

on ground attacking the mara (for me) usually misses against good moving players?

(For me dragoons can go very fast on the tunnel in atcs if you staft)

Good human players can kill rants with rifles. So what? The majority of players cannot perform beyond an average (if even) lever, so don't worry about the exceptional players unless you are. Let your team handle it.

''Good players can kill a tyrant with rifle''

Maybe, but the Tyrant gotta be really really really retarded... that could only happen to a first day player against a pro.

''on ground attacking the mara (for me) usually misses against good moving players? ''

All i suggest is to play mara even more, you'll get used to follow a good moving player even if you are grounding.

''(For me dragoons can go very fast on the tunnel in atcs if you staft)''

A Marauder strafe jumping using walls to gather speed go as fast or maybe faster than a goon at atcs' hall. Learn to move quick using wall jumps it help alot to run, i swear :p

If you're alone against a tyrant with a rifle, all you have to hope for is that you can dance with them and that you don't suck so much that you can barely hit a rant. I've rifled many rants from full health, but like Draikonz said, they're pretty much always retarded. I've only rifle dueled and killed good rants a very small number of times.

On-topic, with maras, I find that spending most of your time on the ground is best in 1 on 1 confrontations, while jumping a lot isn't bad for killing groups. That's just my style though.

I blastered a rant that was afk!

And Dracone, I'd have to agree with you there. It's much easier to ground mara with an occasional jump in 1 v 1.

It is technically impossible to rifle a good Tyrant in 1v1. The fact that you rifled it in a 1v1 implies that the Tyrant is a complete retard.

Not true. Quite simply, no. I've killed a skilled (20+ kill) Rant with an SG, and I'm the equavalent of a "Smart Noob" (As in, I know what to do, I just don't.) Anyone can kill any rant if they use strategy. Simply, take cover, distance, etc.

Marauders must move erratically, and that's why you can't hit them. If they didn't, you may as well dretchstorm. Quite simply, there is no cure all against a good player.

Only 20+ kills? With a rant? I don't know if that would be considered skilled.

Thankgod that you show us your lack of knowledge about Tremulous' mechanics by assuming that not having a certain amount of kills must surely mean you lack skills. I guess you belong to the large group of killwhoring Tyrants who should actually be going Pearl Harbor-style on the Human base for the good of the Swarm, but rather spend their time camping the Human base, racking up kills, and sharing them among their teammates.

Foul, foul noob.

getting much more than 30 kills in a reasonably sized game is usually the sign of a bad player.

Kevlarman refuses to play any games that are larger than 5v5 or something like that, so I wouldn't mind any numerical comparisons he makes, since they're not normalized for server size.

Wow, even in a 5v5 you easily get more than 30 kills with a Tyrant, but that's not the point here. The point is judging someone's skill based on his killcount, which is just wrong, wrong and wrong.

A lot of people unfortunately look down now on the opportunistic victories caused by the lack of full teamwork in public games, such as RC jumping when no one is in the human base. All I can say is, yes it does look dirty, but truthfully it is legal. Intelligent? Fuck that, anyone can see when they can RC jump if they know where anti-hop rets go. It's legal and effective, but really really lazy.

I've seen you in game. You play enough to know that the basis of a skilled player is not kills. An awesome player could have one kill, whereas an awful player could have ten. Also, on another note, it was ten minutes in and he was one of three rants versus four humans. So not many targets.

I usually end up very low in the kills list, becuase i mainly focus on 'rets and other exposed buildings...
Only times when i rack up on kills, is when I want to killwhore, or when we simply can't push through to the human base. (have to mow the lawn.)

I'm not saying that i'm very good, but i know how to help my team.

What he means, I think, is at that if you haven't won by that point, you're fucking pathetic, or kill-whoring to feed your oversized ego.

If you have evenly skilled teams, S3 battles can last pretty damn long. That has nothing to do with kill-whoring to feed ones oversized ego, but much more with the fact that you just cannot win.
If you always easily win once you reach your beloved Tyrant, maybe you need to play more challenging games, versus more skilled opponents.

Consecutive 40 second wins are always just fine and dandy. Unless you're on the team getting owned.
