deh penuin will dominate us

techhead

It is superior to Lava's drunken penguin. Lava's penguin looks like it passed out, flipped over, and had doodles painted on his chest in his sleep by his so-called "friends".

On a side note, happy belated birthday dasprid!!!

Death On Ice

That's a swastika.

Except, since the penguin is upside-down, it is actually pointing the opposite way.
The swastika was originally a PEACE sign, but the Nazi's flipped it to mean war.

Therefore, Tux has a peace sign on him.

Right?

Umm... In case you hadn't noticed, the swastika is symmetrical, that means if even if it was rotated 180 degrees, it is the EXACT same symbol. Nice try though.

Kriegsgott

I believe he said "flipped"; not "rotated". While the swastika is rotationally symmetrical, it is not vertically symmetrical.

Atom Eve

But Tux, in this case, has not been flipped. He has been rotated, therefore the swastika has only been rotated. Since it has rotational symmetricality, it's still a right-facing swastika -- one of the symbols of the nazi party.

thats a nazi sign on purpose, even i don't think that it's a kind of cheerleading neonazi ideas.
but it just looks unnecessary and disturing on tremulous forums.

It's just a swastika, get over it. I don't think anyone would whine if I used the portrait of Mao as my avatar.

the quake avatar was cool, this is not just uncool but unnecessarly provocating. (e.g. this symbol is forbidden in my country, such as the communist symbols and so on.)
i don't think it's a nice way to represent our community.
here at the company i use the forums almost all day long while working, and anyone who passes trough behind me has to stare at this symbol, inculding clients.
but keep it in this selfish way, you're in power to do that.

plus, I'm a homosexual jewish black guy raised by gypsies and i find the sign annoying personally.

EDIT: now our forum has nearly 2500 nazi swastikas. congratulations.

Just remove it and you'll avoid bitching and whining on these forums

I'm not in the least bothered by the bitching and whining of people who live in the 1940's. People are very selective when it comes to history, because like I said, I'm pretty sure nobody would have whined or bitched if I had a portrait of Mao as my avatar.

Shadowgandor

It's a mental thing. Me for example, don't mind the swastika even though I'm not a racist or anything, but there are people who seem to throw up once they see a sign like that. It's just an act of respect if you would remove it ;)
Now that I think of it...No, keep it like that. I like the people trying to get you to put it off :D

Lava Croft

It's act of respect to remove it? I think it's an act of respect to stop trying to make people remove something you don't like. Live and let live, remember. If I do what Optimus wants, everybody can go demanding that other people remove images they don't like.

Description of the image itself aside, you can fix this yourself fairly easily.  Go to your profile, select "Look and layout preferences" and click "Don't show users' avatars."

Who cares about pictures of symbols. They're just that anyway, symbols. Same shit as renaming the negerzoen. Even if lava ever started forcing opinions and controlling people it doesn't matter, because there being a symbol or not wouldn't matter either way.
I'm busy. I'll ignore you later.

techhead

I know exactly what it is, and sadly, it is the kinda thing drunken immature frat boys would doodle on someone's stomach.
I just don't get the penguin part, really.

No one looked at the other half of my post either.

The problem does not lie with me using a swastika, the problem lies with the people who seem to have trouble with 'decoupling' the swastika from the Nazi's.

The penguin part relates to the certain kind of Linux users who I not hold dearly. The kind of Linux users that show behaviour not completely alien to Nazi behaviour.

Word of the day: preconception

techhead

Thank you! I was wondering that, have a nice day!

(Lava could use a +1 karma for that, IMHO)

You good awareness that this avatar open diskussion about Nazi. That is what evoking this symbol without exception whether is real Nazi symbol or not. But, question is, what you would demonstrate with this. I always thought you were authority for this forum. But at the moment i don't think so. It is not preconception, it is about abused symbol whereon is Nazi ideology based.

And i don't turn off "show users avatars" due to unfortunate picture choice.

It seem as when school-boy doodle those symbols on desk. He knows that mustn't, but that is all.

From your explanation of your little penguin the reference you want others to 'decouple' seems to be intentional. So you haven't quite decoupled it yourself and also didn't intend it to be viewed 'decoupled'.

And a last question, why is it a problem if a majority of western people don't want to 'decouple' the swastika (drawn in the style of that time) from the Nazi period, or why should it be?
Is it helpful if it would have been?

That is exactly where your human psyche either thinks into one direction, or the opposite. Some people have no problems with it, and other people do.

[EDIT] Nice way of adding to your post while I am busy writing a reply to your first two remarks. Might be a bit more honest to actually note that you have added those last two sentences.
