Question concerning Trem versions
« on: March 28, 2008, 03:05:58 am »
Hi there,

Basically, I'm pretty dumb when it comes to computers, so rather than bother random people in game, I thought I'd get help here.

I was told earlier about Trem client "971" or something, and that I should get it. After a bit of google searching and searching the forum here, I'm a little confused.

Can someone please tell me what this refers to, what it changes for me, and where I can get it?
(That is, if I can/should get it.)

I'm also running on MAC OS X.

Thanks in advance!

They were probably referring to the clients available at trem-servers.com

http://trem.tjw.org/backport/ Is a more up to date client, as released by one of the devs.
Trem-Servers claim there's is better, but I fail to see how other than the fact its not as well tested and isn't affiliated with the devs.
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

I'm disappointed that people's past actions have forced me to state what should be obvious.
I am not a dev.  Nothing I say counts for anything.

it has a bunch of pointless patches added, but because it's built from recent enough svn it's the only precompiled client that runs properly on x86_64

I usually use the one from the FAQ link, then drag the icon from the link David posted over the original, boot up the game, go to the first server, enable autodownload and serverguiduniq, and sail on, knowing that I'll get the files I need from servers within a week or three of just playing. I haven't found a nicely patched and ported Mac client, except for the one that they posted about on the BG forums, ages ago. Comp[SU] said it was even faster for Intel machines, but I've yet to try it. If I get ambitious, I'll post a link, or you can go over there and ask about it, or just PM Comp, who is back around these days (however briefly).

Amanieu: that looks harder than just going to tjw's site and then getting the patches off servers. I don't find simple Mac instructions or a specific Mac client. The OP is running OS X, from what I gather. Otherwise, nice resource, for those who dabble in such things.

edit'd for clarity

P.S. If there was a Mac client, a Mac backport and a Mac-patch-to-date-package, I think people would download all three in one shot, (or you can hunt and peck through PatchTracker and DIY). One nice Mac patch with sort-by-ping, Options as a menu item on the Play page, and brightness controls for the end-user made simple, that would be really useful. If it could also enable both guidserveruniq and allowdownload, it would make everyone's life a lot easier, so no-one would have to remember how to explain it to the Mac guy again. :P I don't even care so much about enabling threading or any of that speed stuff; just the most basic patches and the backport in one download with the client. And I don't care about any server-side stuff at all. If I want to run a server I'll get tremded, and then all the patches I like. I'm just talking about the Mac client here. I'm hoping it's superseded by the great Mac (officially-supported) 1.2 client that I hope comes out the same day as the next iteration and renders this discussion moot.
