MP3 Encoding Contest
« on: May 20, 2008, 01:48:44 am »
Quote from: Nvidia
Encoding MP3s always seem to take longer than it should. Do you wish you can find a way to make the process run faster?

Now there is a way. Enter this Contest by creating a program that will speed up MP3 encoding on a CUDA-enabled GPU, and the winner will receive a US$5,000.00 cash prize, subject to the Official Rules.
http://cudacontest.nvidia.com/index.cfm?action=contest.contest&contestid=2

Now I know this isn't really something to get excited over but some of you are skilled, and I use that term loosely, C programmers and I'm positive that many of you could use $5000. What've you got to lose?

I hope you pay the fraunhoffer institute for every mp3 you "encode", as they own the rights to said format

I meant to say, why spend time on an inferior codec, while there is a free, superior codec available.

Cause MP3 Player sounds cool, while OGG player just sounds nerdy. Marketing issue. :P

MP3 Player is a weird name anyhow, since most 'MP3 Players' also play other formats. So you could call it a WMA player, or Wave Player. :P

An iPod is considered an MP3 Player too. iPod is a brand name, like Walkman or Discman.

The *Zune is nothing but MicroSoft's endless attempts at creating a non-sucking media device.

But it's not called and mp3 player. It's called an iPod. That was the point I was trying to make. But I see you're point.

I prefer OGG but none of my portable players support it (mp3, wav and of course Microsoft formats).
