Hey,

I would really love to see Tremulous on steam, using steamworks. www.steampowered.com/steamworks.

It is free, and you can put your game in the store and charge nothing, or not.

There are accievements, Multiplayer Matchmaking, Anti Cheat, Voice Chat, Auto-Updating, Real Time Statistics, Encrypted retail media, Anti-piracy, Beta-testing, Rapid and secure build distribution, Know your target audience (Specs), Bug reporting, Steam Efficiant Installer.

Valve is the coolest company, and they run steam witch is awsume, so i think if it's free why dont you add tremulous to steam?!

Don't interrupt the debate! Genuinely valid points are being made.

Also, I'd like to see less unsubstantiated claims please.

Lastly, it's a shame something which is pretty darn on topic has had to be swept into the corner.

Back on topic: I like the advertising benefits! It would give us some better players (albeit a helluvalot of l4m3z0rs for each c00lz0r) and perhaps even urge the 1.2 development along >.>

If Trem goes to steam, it will get a large influx of players, and, given the reputation of CS and the likes, hackers.

Put simply; DO NOT WANT!

Also, buy games on Amazon: Cheaper + Hard copy of game!

Umm...

What about us ppc mac users?!?!?!?  Wine only ever got as far as working on Intel macs, and qemu would be too slow...

I have done nothing with Steam, but that link from TwistedGamerz said nothing about a mac version...

Rocinante, I too use a Mac to run Steam, and it works perfectly for me. I've been using it for over two years to play HL2 and mods, as well as other games. My only complaint is that games to download should cost less than their boxed counterparts.

Games on steam cost more because of a "convenience fee" that is, you don't actually have to go to a store to buy it, or wait for it to be shipped to you, so you pay more because of this convenience fee.

Steam hasn't given me a single error in the time that I've used it, and except for the matinence periods (which are very rare) I have recieved excellent preformance. The chat is better than xFire, and you can add games to launch and track through Steam, even if they aren't on the Steam market.

Putting Trem on Steam would be like giving in to corporate Pigdogs... It's the principle of the thing.

You make absolutely no sense. Care to back up your statement? Do you think you would be playing Tremulous without your so-called 'corporate PigDogs'? Get your feet back on earth please, mister rebel.

You remind me of myself when I first got into Linux and open source. You'll grow out of it soon.

Considering the licenses that trem is released under, using an additional distribution mechanism like steam won't stop those who don't like or need steam from acquiring trem through the usual routes, nor will it force those who don't like or need steam to use it.

Kevlarman, flamewar- wtf?
Atleast there is a serious argument going on, not some flabbering chick fight.

IMO steam is fine, but there really should be a way to have steam and non- steam users play on the same servers.
People really get ticked off at this.. ..geez.

Steam was IMO one of the best things that happened to my computer, because it brougt great, cheap and legal games.

kthx.

It's a discussion about a non-open-source application to which kevlarman has nothing to add. I guess that's why it was locked, because I cannot think of any other reason.

Yes, because everyone knows every guy and his grandmother lives right next to the damn game factory.  ;D
If I am to get my games legit, and I stopped pirating, so do that- I HAVE to go to a store or have them brought to me.

So steam is actually cheaper.

A lot.

And steam somewhat putting a damper on piracy is good. (don't tell me it stopped some causual piratists from aqquiring HL2 illegally.)

Because piracy is a BAD BAD thing, because you're sapping a company which makes really good games for resources. Way to go. I am proud.

steam would be great if it didnt take 3 minutes to start up while it scans my harddrive for hax(i guess). If there is a none steam version of something i will get it because of that.

It took me all of two minutes to find a fully working copy with no DRM and no steam.

Well, if we leave aside the fact that I spent real money on HL2, and after a day of work had to pirate it to make it run thanks to steam being a pile of horse shit, here are a few of the reasons why this fails so bad:
  • Steam only runs on windows.  Most of the players don't use windows
  • Its not free. (See above)
  • Its probably not GPL compatible.
  • No benefit what so ever
  • All the benefits you listed are either not applicable, GPL breaking, or would require way more work to integrate than rolling our own.
  • Valve is not a "cool company".  They hate there users more than any other game company I have ever done business with.
  • Are they paying you for this pitch?

ok first of all most people DO use windows and second no steam does not have all those problems. All that is only YOU and YOU only cause' your probably using a Commodore 64

by the way you also have no evidence though i would say there would really be no real pros to have tremulous on steam unless it made the servers less laggy orgave you better grafixs or enabled more game modes

Since when is that a reason to lock threads on this forum?

I was merely pointing out the error in Bajsefar's assertion that you couldn't pirate steam games.
Also, as I own a legit copy I would like to think that it doesn't count as piracy.
I'll stop feeding the trolls now.

It had Steam. Steam is to do with the topic. It's important that steam is not buggy and that people realise it isn't. I feel it is very much on-topic.

Also, if off-topicness was the reason why did you say flaming was?

[On-topic] Has someone at least asked steam representatives about this? Is there something wrong with doing so? They themselves might tell us why it is/is not a good idea.

People who can't admit to a mistake or at least let it go without excuses.. they depress me.
