I can't listen to it and not think about how white culture has taken so much from black culture only to give back so little.

Those utter bastards, being influenced by other cultures, it's just not on...  ::)
Not "being influenced", taking things from them without giving credit.

Well, in all honesty at the time it wasn't something you really did.  Now, you can't take a tiny sample from a song and include it in your own without all kinds of notifications about where it originated, but when Zeppelin recorded "Whole Lotta Love" there was no real protocol for giving credit to Willie Dixon.

Judas Priest

Speaking of JP, they just released a brand new double-length concept album called Nostradamus, which is very operatic yet quite metallic, from what I've heard so far.

this thread of full of shred

Player1, I think that I like thrash, but I'm not really familar with it yet.

What are the big names in this genre other than Metallica/Megadeth?  What else would you recommend?

And also...

kozak6: Awesome comic!

I would say that the major thrash bands were Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth and Metallica, but one could easily include Overkill, Testament, Exodus, Flotsam & Jetsam, Kreator, Dark Angel, Nuclear Assault, SOD/MOD and possibly even some material from bands as diverse as Voivod, Suicidal Tendencies and Helloween. For a nice summation of the entire sound and era, I highly recommend the new Black Tide album. These bands were all influenced by the progenitors like Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple and Queen, as well as such NWOBHM stalwarts as Diamond Head, Motorhead, King Diamond, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, Tank, Raven, Venom and even bands like Tygers of Pan Tang (as well as such American shredders as Riot, The Rods, Y&T and Queensrhyce). [What no umlaut?!? <.< Sacrilege!] Also, although they came later, Sepultura is considered a major thrash act.

Yahoo

No order for the first four, Amon Amarth, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Iron Maiden. Opeth, Rush, Testament, Iced Earth, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Insomnium, and Led Zeppelin are tied for fifth.

Yeah fuck you it's my list.

I also recommend you check out the Milwaukee-based hardcore punk band Die Kreuzen, who quite excellently and clearly demonstrate the extreme crossover between thrash metal and hardcore punk during the early-to-mid-80s era, when it was considered cool to like the Misfits and Minor Threat as well as Nuclear Assault and Anthrax, a condition that only lasted a few years, until metal went all LA-glam. As I said above, two of Die Kreuzen's best songs were "All White" and "Man in the Trees" ("Cool Breeze" the video linked to above, is also a great song); unfortunately, I can't find videos of either song. I recommend their October File CD, which includes their first two "full-length" albums: Die Kreuzen (1984) and October File (1986). Also, note that the band's name may often appear as Die Kreutzen.

Have fun with your research.

Cheers!

The grindcore category on that image is a weak representation for the genre =/

It is wikipedia, so you may even be able to modify it. But anyway, please elucidate: Who would you consider to be the premier grindcore acts?

Lava Croft

Discussions about musical genres are a never-ending road that only leads to everlasting stupidity. Musical genres are invented by the media, so they can easily classify the shit you listen to. Joining the media in this nonsense of labelling everything for ease of disgestion shows a lack of actual respect for people who make music, even if it is as shitty as metal.

TinMan

What Lava said. What I interpret to be grindcore is way different than what that wikipedia image and possibly most media would consider to be grindcore.
For me you cannot have a better representation of grindcore than Pig Destroyer for older grindcore, Gutted With Broken Glass for new grindcore.

I seriously doubt that wikipedia is the final word on any subject. That link was provided for the benefit of another poster who asked about a particular variety of metal. I personally could care less who the good grindcore bands are, we were actually discussing thrash. Many of the bands of that era wholeheartedly embraced labels like speed metal and thrash, to distinguish themselves from other bands and sell more records, T-shirts and concert tickets. I simply gave TinMan the chance to further develop his statement with some examples, as this is a common courtesy in polite conversation. Nice troll, Lava, I'd expect no less than your usual condescending attitude. Please refrain from trying so hard to be insulting, it's really quite beneath you.

Cheers!

P.S. "Stupidity", "nonsense" and "shitty" are three words that accurately describe your post, if nothing else about this conversation.

Sometimes I wonder if your smart moments are the exceptions, or your retarded moments. That was not a troll, it was merely a remark about how bitching about what belongs to a certain kind of genre and what does not is an utter waste of time. The fact that what I posted is not something you agree with does not automagically make it a troll, so please stop being so overly emotional about it, geez.

Why don't you just spam some more of your 10-year old images, if you do not comprehend/agree with what is being posted.

player1

Please do not attempt to tell me what is an utter waste of time or convey anything anyone else says as "bitching". It makes you look like an unfocused, bitter, small-minded person who has very little real authority, and who constantly tries to use his tin star to grind his personal axe. Again, another nice try, but you fail as a troll. Also please refrain from using terms like "retarded" constantly. It really is beneath you.

Cheers!

It's always good to tell people to stop telling you what do, only to tell those same people what to do a few sentences later.
Makes you look really, really smart.

Again, I merely stated that a discussion about what band belongs to a certain genre and what band does not will lead to nothing and nowhere. If you consider that to be a troll, well, I don't really have any reply for you than: 'Haha!'

[PS] You are being a tad over-sensitive here. I wonder why...

Kaleo
