I'm having trouble to install QVM's. -_-;
« on: July 04, 2008, 12:00:44 am »
Hey, its me, Hendrich. I decided to install Bomb's QVM for my thread, but I'm having trouble doing so. So heres what I did:

1) First I tried putting my QVM in "C:\Program Files\Tremulous\base\vm" -but it didn't work.
2) So I tried putting my QVM into "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner.. then all of a sudden I encounter a problem.

PS: Click on "FULL SIZE" on the top-left cornor of the image for a better veiw.

I mean, wtf? I don't see "LOCAL SETTINGS" anywhere! what do I do?

Plz help, thx.

Try tools menu > folder options > view > check 'show hidden files and folders' or something like that.

qkey is fine, its your GUID.
Any more info than "It doesn't work"?
Any maps not in the MG repo?  Email me or come to irc.freenode.net/#mg.

Ok, so after reading TJW's SETUP, I believe that after I put the QVM in "C:\...\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous\base\vm" (which I did) and I should download Tremed (which i did), but when when the SETUP.txt from TJW's site said to go to Cmd.Exe, go to the directory of where Tremed was, I didn't know how to change my directory.

So Here's me when I started up Cmd.exe
http://s310.photobucket.com/albums/kk426/Joroshira/?action=view&current=asdas.jpg

And here's what I thought: "Obviously if I want to go to the directory of "anywhere" in my drive via Cmd.exe, all I have to do is type the location and Cmd.exe will follow that path." Which I did
http://s310.photobucket.com/albums/kk426/Joroshira/?action=view&current=sadasd.jpg

Then  all of a sudden DOS became a *#&^!
http://s310.photobucket.com/albums/kk426/Joroshira/?action=view&current=asdf.jpg

I got pissed afterwards -_-
http://s310.photobucket.com/albums/kk426/Joroshira/?action=view&current=DFGH.jpg

PS: Click on "FULL SIZE" on the top-left cornor of the image for a better veiw.

So, how do I do it? How do I change the directory to Tremulous instead of "C:\Documents & Settings\Owner"?

You need to put the path in quotes since "empty space" is usually not allowed in file names/path.

On a second note:

If you do not know such basic things please refrain from putting up a server. You will only endanger yourself and the other people on the network.

Nahh. Worst thing that could happen is the server just will not work.
Best way to learn ist practise. Keep on, Hendrich :)

Ok, the information Bissig told me didn't help. Is it ok that you give pictures or elabortate?

And thx jackForward, atleast you're nice to ppl learning how to host a server.   ::) "Right Bissig?"

Sorry, I will not contribute to teach you how to use windows. If you can't figure that out for yourself maybe go to windows.com or some windows related forums until you have the basic skills needed to use it.

Anyways a few things:

"CD" is the command to change directories.
You can not have empty space in file/path names without escaping them or otherwise mask them.

f.e. CD "C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Tremulous\base\"

Windows Vista tries to hide alot of stuff from the user. So, it may fool you in what it does NOT show you (or simply discard changes you have made)

http://www.windowsvistauserguide.com/command_line/command_line_cd.htm

(You tried to change directories without using the changedir command????)

Ok, scratch that. I know how to do it, all i had to freakin' do was to type "cd" beside the location path I typed in. Really, was that hard enough to awnser ppl? You could've told me to put two damn words beside the path I kept writting in. >:(

So, now I have a new problem. I know I'm in my directory, but how do I run it? do I do "run tremed.exe..." or what? Refer to the bottom link, and check the WINDOWS heading, becaouse thats the OS I have.

http://www.tjw.org/tremulous/SETUP.txt

I cannot do #6    :(

How bout you read it?

Type: tremded.exe and all the following stuff in the cmd.exe and then hit the RETURN key. Seriously: Get a computer class!

Edit:

BTW, next time read the STICKY:

WOW, Thx for the info!

NOT!

I may suck at Windows, but atleast I know that I should hit the ENTER key after I typed everything in.  -_-
I appreciate that your helping me, but I don't like being insulted, its rude.  >:(

Ok, heres whats happening:

1) I type in "cd C:Program Files\Tremulous" in the Cmd.exe"
2) Then I typed in "tremded.exe +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg"
3) Then I hit ENTER ( ::) )

Then I get this:
http://s310.photobucket.com/albums/kk426/Joroshira/?action=view&current=untitled.jpg

"Tremed.exe is not reconized as a executable, batch, etc..etc... file."

What do I do now?

Just make a batch file...
Make a text file, name it server.bat.
Inside the file type:
tremded.exe +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg
Save it, now you just run the file instead of going to command prompt every time you want to execute your server.
I'm a developer for the following projects(now I'm inactive) :
TremWars's QVMNot updated anymore
TremWars's Client and Server Executable
TremWars's QVM 2

Well, on a newer note, I have a new problem. -_-;

So I started up my server, but when I try to join either the humans or the aliens and spawn, it gives me wierd messages like "You cannot build on this surface, this surface it either too steep or unstable and blah blah blah."

Heres a screenshot of the problem:
http://s310.photobucket.com/albums/kk426/Joroshira/?action=view&current=aaaa.jpg

I mean, WTF? I just wanna spawn. :P

Im pretty sure that this problem has been discussed on the fourms, so Ima going to look for some awnsers. I thought I might as well ask here in case I don't. Thx for your replies.

PS: I'm not sure, but I think it has something to do with my server configuration.  :-\

Try setting sv_pure to 1.

However, there is one problem I've found: if you have extra data and vms PK3s (such as those required by an upgraded client) in your client directory and have your server executables there as well, this forces everyone to download those PK3s before they can join. You should always have a completely separate directory for your server(s).

Well, thx to Bomb I can properly activate my server and spawn properly, it was because of sv_pure.  :P

Well, another problem (hopefullly the last ones) is 3 things:

1) I do not know how to name my server, mostly because I activate it from Cmd.exe, so I'm wondering how to change the server name.

2) You know when you join a server there's a description at the bottom below the server name? how do I make/edit that description. Yea I know this is a n00b problem that I should find in the fourms, but I rather ask here then go looking for shadows. -_-

3) Bomb is right, soemtimes ppl had to download stuff from my server before they come, probaly because I have stuff in my tremulous folder, but when i cheacked it fine. All i have is TJW's backport, Tremded and a bunch of custom maps in my base folder which I copied from my other Tremulous folder.

1) You need to edit server.cfg. sv_hostname is the server name. It accepts color escapes (e.g. ^7).

2) g_motd is the message. Accepts color escapes.

3) Are you sure there aren't any data or vms PK3s in there?

You might have to create a separate user just to make your server work properly. Make sure that one has no extra PK3s besides data-1.1.0.pk3, vms-1.1.0.pk3, and the maps.

And remember: sv_pure 1

hey hendrich im kill3r. To add the bots, open the server.cfg file (with notepad) and where it says:
sv_privateclients <number>
You should replace <number> with how ever many bots you want to add. like if you want 5 bots lets say, youd do:
sv_privateclients 5
Then restart the server.
The full guide to using bots is here:
http://www.mercenariesguild.net/patches/?do=details&task_id=96
Also hendrich, the spawing still isnt working! You may need to remove the server and make a brand new one from scratch
See you in HDSI arena!

crap. i also forgot to tell you this. to do Unlimited BP, follow these steps:
1. In Tremulous/base, create a directory called "mapconfigs".
2. In server.cfg, add the following line:

Code:
set g_mapconfigs "mapconfigs"3. In Tremulous/base/mapconfigs, create a script called "default.cfg" with these lines:

Code:
set g_alienbuildpoints 999999999
set g_humanbuildpoints 999999999
4. Now kill the server and restart it, these changes will then take effect.

oops. Thats the wrong thing. Do this instead:
1. In Tremulous/base, create a directory called "mapconfigs".
2. In server.cfg, add the following line:
set g_mapconfigs "mapconfigs"
In Tremulous/base/mapconfigs, create a script called "default.cfg" with these lines:

set g_alienbuildpoints 999999999
set g_humanbuildpoints 999999999

4. Now kill the server and restart it, these changes will then take effect.

Daum kill3r, about time you joined the fourms.  :D

I'll take your adice, right away, in the mean time in my next replie I'll make a link to a thread telling you how to make a server. :P
