What makes you give karma?

I've searched with the useful Search button for other threads like this, but didnt find or notice one.

So what makes you give positive/negative karma to a person?
This thread is not like the others that say "what is karma" or "what is it needed". Its to understand what makes you give karma to people.

For example, im new to these forums (not to Tremulous) and i already have -2 karma. I dont have a problem with this at all, but i don't understand why? What made the person(s) give karma? Is it that some people find every thread/post stupid or something?
The only things that ive done so far is answer on a thread about deconning and creating a thread a bout a clan. What makes you find something bad about that?

Generally, what are the reasons tho give negative and positive karma to someone?


(P.S : Im 100% sure that someone will say something like "I give negative karma to people who start <offending word> threads like this")

Personally, I give karma to people who actually try to stay on topic and help. Being funny adds to the likelyhood of getting karma, but if you're a funny troll, I'll smite you. Jump, you seem to be helpful and well mannered, so I'm assuming it's the clowns that are running around smiting you for no reason other than for their personal shits and giggles.

Karma is meaningless, but I am sometimes inclined to give karma for really stupid, wrong, or good posts. player1's post above characterizes smite-worthiness pretty well.

Karma is an indicator of how many times people have clicked the [applaud] or [smite] button. Nothing more.

Being actually on topic, I'll give some examples of good things and bad things -- these have little to do with karma and more to do with being useful.
Bad things (i.e., regardless of what your karma says, you are an idiot for...):

• picture posts with little to no text
• posting off-topic

Good things (i.e., regardless of what your karma says, you are useful for...):

• helping people when they need it, providing useful commentary, etc.
• actually putting thought into your posts
