CPL were working on a competitive remake of "Quake 3 Arena" called Severity, but CPL pretty much shut down. Quake Live is for the most part the same idea. Make a free game on the Quake 3 Engine that can become very popular and is mainly focused on multiplayer playing for LAN parties, competitions, leagues, and basic online scrims. It's kinda like with Wolfenstein: Enemy-Territory was released for free, and is to this day played by a large and competitive user-driven community.

I'll be playing the beta at QuakeCon 2008   ;D (17 days)

It's a free event (sponsored), find your own ride there, it would probably be out of your way to go to Chicago just to try to make it in my luggage on the plane to Dallas.

The BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) event is already full, but there's much more to do there and there will be plenty of vendor booths, free stuff, and tech previews.

You'd be driving then? LOL
Or flying from a different country?

I'm splitting airfare and hotel with my friend 50/50 (he payed for the plane tickets, I payed for our hotel room, then we added those costs together and divided by 2) and we're only at about $315 each. Of course we'll be spending money on food for four days and a shuttle from the airport to the hotel and back, but idk where you're getting that large price from.

Flying from Aus

Almost $2000 for return tickets, plus $1000 for expenses, like food, accommodation etc.

Maybe another year, or if they ever do it here, it would probably be Melbourne Exhibition Center, so that'd be but a tram ride away.

It would be my first time in the US, so naturally I would be buying souvenirs.

Plus, don't you have like really high quality hookers over there?

No, they're not chicks with dicks; they're guys with tits. :)

Find that out the hard way, did ya?

(Could've also gone with: Just the way you like 'em, huh?)

@Kaleo: Now those are what I'd call "accommodations": Escorts & Alcohol. Looking for "New in Town" or "Actual Photo"? Apparently TinMan has yet to party with Aussies yet, to understand how you could go through a grand in four days. That would probably be just the bar bill. 8)

@TinMan: Thank the Lord that your sXe. See how fast you can go through money when you have vices?

Back on topic, I have some screenshots from the tutorial level up on here, they will eventually be moved to my actual blog and organized, but for now I'll give you uncensored access ;D

I had to enable console to tweak my settings, it's disabled by default so you have to locate the config and tweak it, most actual binds and video settings still don't have a menu to be changed in, they just say 'under construction' when you click the menu. It uses pk3's, but they aren't zip files, I tried extracting them and using them on a normal Quake 3 install. The baseq3 directory is about 250 mb.

Here are the screenshots:

Crash is a girl...
I was trying to get shots of the weapons, they're Quake 3 Team Arena ones.
Quake Live was codenamed Quake Zero, the modified engine is still called that.

The current version is "QuakeZero0.1.0.160" :P

Custom maps wouldn't work because the maps have to have the advertisements in them. Custom servers could be used to modify the content and remove the ads. So yeah, those wouldn't work.

There will definitely be a lot of servers though, since it will be an ad-sponsored game. It isn't supposed to look new at all, it's supposed to be free Quake 3 (2000)

What what NDA in the DNA?

Once upon a time, long long ago*, Quake Live was known as Quake Zero. Quake Zero was like Quake I, Quake II, Quake III Arena and Quake 4, but 1, 2, 3 arenas and 4 less respectively. After realising the negative impact a consecutive sequence of version numbers has on the nature of the universe it was decided that the Quake series would now use words for version identification. Live, Living, Dead, Undead, Resurrected, etc.

* Some time in 2007

Judging from TinMan's screenshots, id Software actually managed to make q3dm0.bsp look worse than it did almost 10 years ago.

It's still Quake 3 :P
I think the "Live" part is because you run it from your browser xD
QuakeZero is just a b.a. codename

Lava Croft, you should see what they did to q3ctf4, all the good trick jumps are blocked by changes they made to the map =/

I don't like the idea of changed maps... Not when the .bsp names are the same as in 'classic' Quake3.
Let's hope they are not trying to make it like a 'Unreal Tournament-ified' version of Quake3.

Actually the map names are all changed. q3ctf4 is qzctf4, it's no longer Quake 3, it's Quake Zero.

Most of the maps aren't changed other than the billboard that you see in the E3 trailer linked above, the billboards are added since the game is ad-sponsored.

Saying it's not Quake3 anymore but Quake Zero is not only wrong, it's stupid. Any monkey can see it's just a rehashed Quake3.
