It's the same engine and the same maps, but it's definitely not the same gameplay. When it comes out or when they do a public beta, you'll see what I mean.

Quake 3 players will not feel at home playing it, they might feel frustrated at first because everything they are used to is different.

So my fear about it turning into a Unreal Tournament (read: fps for newcomers) was not that misplaced.
After all, Quake Live's goal is to let people who have never experienced Quake in the past get a taste of real FPS gaming.

Actually, it's not like that at all. If you listen to the QCon 2007 keynote and read the interviews with Carmack you'll see that Quake Live has a universal stats system with the intention of keeping tournaments, clans, and players organized. The game determines what level of skill you have and offers to place you in competition with others of similar status, that way someone who's new to the game doesn't go up against fatal1ty.

I personally think that it's everything Team Arena was supposed to be but failed miserably at being.

By mentioning that Quake Zero is everything that Team Arena failed to be, you instantly 'dismiss' it as a real Quake game, since all Team Arena tried to do was mimic the success of Unreal Tournament. And as you correctly stated, it failed at doing so.

This doesn't mean Quake Zero is a failed project, on the contrary, it's just not what I would want, nor do I like classic maps being tempered with. It's certainly a very interesting thing, FPS game that launches from browser and all.

I think it launching from your browser is the worst part. Some browsers really struggle with running plugins like that (FF3, IE6, Opera), etc.

Team Arena tried to make up for the things that went bad in Quake 3, it tried to turn DM into TDM and add on things that people liked from Q3 mods. If anything, it was aimed to improve the game for competitive use. It failed because the team command sucked, the bots couldn't understand the new features, the weapons were unbalanced, and about half of the maps were real crap and made to be walked in when Quake is all about running.

For all of the maps other than Q3CTF4, I think they did great justice to the maps by cleaning them up. So far all changes I've seen are either for balance or to fix glitches...except for Q3CTF4, it looks like they based it on the Q4 version of the map which makes no sense and is fail.

Navigating the maps hasn't changed at all and nothing is out of place, again with the exception of Q3CTF4 :x

Team Arena was id Software's answer to all the Unreal Tournament whiners that cried about the lack of stupid teamplay gamemodes in Quake3. (zomg no flying alien~~~)

In the case of the maps, I am in favor of creating new maps, instead of rape classic maps.

I am sure Quake World will seriously own Quake Live!

Team Arena is nothing like UT, nor does it even seem like it was meant to be. If they tried to make it like UT then they failed at that also. There are no flying aliens xD

The maps aren't raped. I think it's been made clear to id that making new maps can be iffy, so if they're going to make a free game it should have all the good maps in it and none that are new and iffy.

Quake World died to me when Robin Walker & John Cook joined Valve and took Team Fortress with them.

Personally, I'd just prefer to see Q3 released as Freeware.

Do up the maps (moar greeble), add new maps, new skins and release it for free, and ta-da! Quake Live without all the hassles of browser launching.

That would be great, but I'm pretty sure id can't do that because of the licensing on the media. It's not just free Quake 3 though, it's a little more than that now with all the things they've added and changed, the engine has some much needed updates, stuff that hasn't even all made it into ioquake3 yet.

For free Quake 3 there's Open Arena.

Comparing Open Arena to Quake3 is downright insulting to id Software and their artists.

Truer words have never been spoken...

That's chiefly because that was written, but I'll let that slide for now.

Other than the furries and with taking into consideration that it's not even at a 1.0 release, Open Arena is great. You can play just about all non-stock Q3 maps in it and even use CPMA mod on it.

imo, Quake 3 without CPM physics isn't worth playing.

CPMA isn't a conversion mod or anything, it's just different physics and a set of admin and spectator tools. The DeFRaG mod used the same physics. There are two types of physic sets that are extremely popular in competitive Quake 3, they are vq3 (vanilla quake 3) and CPM.

vcxzet?

And it isn't a browser game, it just interfaces with the exe from the browser. The web-based side of it was like stripping the menu from the game, slapping it into HTML and adding lots of restrictions, such as only being able to see servers within your local area.

And as for NDA's sucking, when I was made to agree to the NDA, it gave me an empty text box where the NDA terms were meant to be...
