Welcome to the Wrath Newbie Training Server
« on: September 11, 2008, 09:40:17 am »
Welcome to the Newbie Training Server

Tremulous does not come with a Single Player mode. If you are new to the game you have to join a Server and play online. For new players this is pretty hard. They get kicked or flamed because of feeding, blocking or crap building. On other Servers they can't even join a team if they connect as "UnnamedPlayer".
Our goal is to provide a Server dedicated to Newbies where they can check out and learn all game related elements. On certain days we have lessons managed by decent tutors. We have a forum where Newbies can find useful infos and examples for lessons. And we have an IRC channel for quick questions.

What about skilled players?
This is a server for Newbies. Advanced/skilled players are told to help the Newbies or leave. This is their only purpose here.
If you are willing to help the Newbies please say so when entering the server. If you just come by to get some fast kills or start flaming the Newbies, you will be kicked.
All good players (and that means not only so called 'pro' players) get limited on our server. You will only have access to certain weapons/alien classes and you will not be able to destroy enemy buildings.

Bots for easy killing
We have added bots to give the Newbies some easy targets. Our bots play human and alien but they are limited: As human, they have only a blaster, as alien they evolve only as dretch. So they should be pretty easy to kill.
Our bots are named robocookie followed by a number, e.g. robocookie#1 or robocookie#2.

Where to find us:
Server adress: 80.190.242.197:30722
Server name: Wrath Newbie Training Server

some info about the server:

Friendly fire is on, so please don't shoot your teammates!
Building points for humans: 110
Building points for aliens: 140
Time limit: at 30 minutes (game over then)
Sudden death: at 20 minutes (no more building then)
share is enabled, so you can share credits or evos to your teammates

contact:
Our forum: http://wraths.dyndns.org/
IRC on freenode, channel: ##wraths

If you are not familiar with IRC and/or if it is really urgent, you may click the following link. A Java applet will pop up (allow it permissions, say yes) and you can chat straight from your browser!

 - Skilled players are told to help the Newbies or leave
 - Speak english only

If you using unmodified amine trembot, then dretch bot will be "very skilled player". Also he can stuck somewhere and his base will be empty.

You forgot to mention that the server is lagged, and has a crappy link (at least for me). I'd advise changing it.

I recommend using unlagged. But this is a very, very good idea. Kudos (karma, that is) to you!

When I first started playing I played on a newb server. (more than two years ago).
They all die due to lack of use.  Good players stay away, so its just newbs and kill whores, or more often, no-one.
But awesome if you can make it work.

One question: Will the admins kick people if they're too good?

I just set sv_maxPing "0", so everyone can connect to the server. We can talk about the disadvantages of a bad ping ingame then :P

I recommend using unlagged.
Since this server is located in Europe, and because most European servers and players seem to not use Unlagged, it might be a much better recommendation to use normal settings instead of Unlagged, since using Unlagged will only teach them skills they will not be able to use that much on European servers.

@Lava: With lagged, people in America will have problems if they try to play. Seeing as a lot of newbies are American, I'm not sure it would be such a good idea.

Syntac, since lagged forces you to predict where players are going to be, it aids in training that skill. I think lagged servers make you more experienced faster than unlagged ones because of that and because there's no system giving you free hits. It might make the "Newbie Training" slower but it's likely it will be more effective.

American Newbies maybe should train on servers closer to them (so unlagged on or off doesn't matter at all for Americans)...

You think that newbies know something about lagged and unlagged? Then trying shoot at target, not somewhere else.

Very true. However: Lag is a problem. It should be completely eliminated. Unlagged does that *fairly* well. Obviously, a better solution is to play on a closer server, but if you haven't got that option...

Anyway, let's not start a flamewar.

Just for your information, Unlagged does not eliminate anything, it merely 'moves' it. It's like having a stain on your carpet, and instead of cleaning it, you move the stain to a place where it seems to be less noticeable.

Results may vary, depending on the situation. Since this situation is situated in Europe, where most people do not use Unlagged, it does not make a whole lot of sense to use Unlagged for newbie training.

Then again, I'm not hosting the server, so meh!

Unlagged shifts the lag around, making everything more or less equal. It's not a perfect solution, far from it, but it seems to work reasonably well at keeping people from having an unfair advantage.

Hello,
If I remember good, admins of Wraths were Caveman, Napkin, das Iro and Lord Byron. Now, it's jackForward, Napkin (das Iro is the hoster of the ROFULOUS servers = two of noname servers).

And <tag/> are admins there, am I wrong ?

i guess many newbies not just lack the information about lagged/unlagged, but they may not even have a clue what ping is for.
