Passable Buildables
« on: September 27, 2008, 06:40:14 pm »
Hi ppl, Hendrich here. I was just wondering if anyone discussed this before (couldn't find any similar topics). Anyways, why can't the buildables be passable to humans (As in, your allowed to go through them) and solid to aliens? Or did a developer made a mod/QVM for this before?  I'm just saying its annoying to get stuck in your base all the time, its a pretty simple question so a simple response is sufficient. Thanks.

-BTW, theres a poll up there to see how much the community is intrested in the idea.

its because if they would, you could probably hide inside them.
then u would get a base full of invisible campers inside structures who couldn't be damaged before killing the machine 1st.

I see, so how about onyl makign the tesela and turrets passable? Wait, hmm, no, not a good idea either. Humans can use Tessies as a safe place so when an alien attacks the human in the tessie, the alien could only attack the tessie while the human pwns it. Same thing goes for a turret.

I guess your right Optimus, I was hoping someone like you could tell me a logical explanation why buildables are solid. +1

I always thought the barricade should be bigger and let aliens walk past but block humans and bullets.

There is, in the server master list you can catch the }MG{ Devolopment Server that has a nifty feature that when a alien wants to get past a barricade, the barricade gets smaller and lets them through (Or so I heard, never played there, too boring XD ).

It wasn't that obvious enough for you to go and do that, many people doesn't actually know.  :P

You need a client-side mod too if you don't want everything to screw up completely.

I don't think that the buildings should be passable by humans, that's just too far from normal physics in my opinion and also makes base building too easy . But I think you could make the teslas shrink like a barricade when a human jumps over them (of course they can't fire when shrunk) without destroying the balance. The humans would still have to jump over it, so they need some stamina.

Technically this would require new animations and a new cgame, so it would be a mod, but should be doable otherwise.

I don't like the idea of 'phantom buildings'. How ever I think perhaps being able to walkthrough team-mates would be handy, deals with the issue of people bumping builders and spawn blockers.

You could just learn to build properly, so you don't need buildables you can pass through.

Client-side predictions should treat players as non-solid, but server-side should be solid.  Random idea I had.  Might make things a little easier on high pingers...

In TF2 you can walk though each other, (and shoot through) but there is high push-back, so running through isn't noticeable, but if you slow down you get punted out.
Not saying its a good idea, but can be done.
IMO just build right.

If you have to cater your game to the skills of idiots, your game will be idiotic.

Look at Team Fortress 2 for proof.

God, I hate it when your right, which is 101% of the time. XD

Yea, I guess it wasn't such a good idea. Oh well, one of these days maybe I could get a decent idea of improving Tremulous, but now, there isn't much reason to reply to this thread. Might as well leave it to die. :P

clearly when someone makes a comment like : 'barricades should be bigger, stop bullets and let alines through them' does not mean: 'is there a modified server where (blahdy blah) happens?'

the person making the comment clearly means it should be added to the actual game itself and not some silly server.

to the point: it is a good idea but it does have some flaws.

Stop posting here, this thread was dead for weeks. Unless you have something interesting that adds to the topic here, your replies aren't welcome.
