Freebies
« on: October 05, 2008, 05:52:54 am »
In case any folks who might be interested were unaware: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170301

Area 51, Full Spectrum Warrior, Rise&Fall, and The Suffering have recently been released as ad-supported freebies courtesy of the U.S. Air Force.

I can't speak for the other games since I haven't bothered with them (and likely won't), but for myself the ad crap is almost a non-entity on FSW.  The same video ad shows up upon startup and shutdown but I can just click it to make it go away, so they shouldn't be anything too bad.  Fingers crossed.

Also, inb4 "FSW sucks mule testicles"

Hmm, MechCommander. The hottest intro video at that time. I so prayed for one of those sexy headsets ;-) Damn difficult game though.

I bought that game for 5 bucks at walmart a few years back. (mech commander)  I thought it was pretty fun.  Which of the other MechWarrior games are free?  I know Mechwarrior4 Mercenaries shouldn't be... I payed 20 bucks for that one. (also a few years back, but still...)

Trojan Schmojan, I say download that freebie goodness.  You never know, you might just end up getting hit with that single benevolant virus: one that creates a large and appealing porn folder on your computer, neatly arranged by hair color and breast size.

Some say that virus is a myth though, so you may not want to risk it.

Still...

That's the whole point of using Microsoft Windows, we're all waiting for that virus to come along and infect our systems.

The real reason why Linux has no problems with viruses: Its not used by stupid people (mostly).

Most people who use linux are fairly computer savvy, and don't click every "download now!" link they see.

The same is not true with windows.

I have never gotten a virus, and no one i know has either.

Those games *could* contain spyware that monitors browsing activity and serves up ads based on it(like EA did with a few games).

Meh I already have good games to play. They look alright though, even though I heard Area 51 sucked. Suffering looks alright but isn't it same as Doom3?

Yea, also try to get the (now free) game called "The Suffering". I like it, its pretty awsome so far. Its sponsored by the US Air Force (Hmm, seems Bush is spending the government's money on something useful for once XD lol, jk, or am I?) and the ads are featured inagme, not on your desktop. Heres the link to the game:
http://files.filefront.com/The+Suffering+Sponsored+by+the+US+Air+Force/;11846564;/fileinfo.html

Heres the wiki about it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Suffering_(video_game)

A little info about the game (from wikipedia):
Quote
The player controls Torque, a man who has been sent to the fictional Abbott State Penitentiary on Carnate Island, Maryland. Torque has been convicted and sentenced to death for murdering his wife and two children, although he claims to have blacked out at the time this happened and cannot remember anything. The night Torque arrives, there is a powerful earthquake, which releases an army of monsters upon the facility. Torque's cell door breaks and he is freed from his captivity. Starting with little more than a shiv, Torque traverses the prison in an attempt to escape Carnate Island alive.

Not a bad storyplot, eh? :D

Yeah, the government got smart and realized videogames have a big effect on young minds.  "Warrock" is another government sponsored shooter, but it has online multiplayer.

Talk about an unethical way to raise recruitment.  :P

lolwat?  War Rock was made by a Korean developer.  You may be thinking of America's Army which unlike WR is a halfway tolerable game.

Ack, good catch.  I was thinking of "America's Army," but had just finished playing Warrock, so it just slipped out.  Warrock is a good free shooter too, though.

Also, quote-pyramids ftw.

Can't emulate?  FWIW, I've heard it's pretty crap anyway.  Haven't bothered to try it myself because the idea of "ranking up" and slooowly "earning" my equipment makes me want to do bad things to people.

(I found "America's Army"  the same way I originally found "Tremulous"... through a list of free first-person-shooters on wikipedia, of all places.)

I heard that Combat Arms is horrible. Didn't try and nor do I wish to. Most of those Korean games annoys me (heck I'm Korean and I don't like their free games).
America's Army was all right. It's just that the training part was annoying. Even if you pass that by finishing it like a good boy or cheating like a bad boy (hehe) it's still annoying. I couldn't play because of either PunkBuster bug or because my computer is Vista...
Never tried Warrock, how is it? I heard it's not as good as it sounds...

And anyone tried those freebies yet? I ALSO heard most of those games had virus and never works.

Haven't experienced either with FSW (Symantec, current), but I haven't tried the other ones so I've no clue how those fare.

TRUFAX.  Bugs me more 'cause I have a friend who's into 'em, especially Gunz.  Bleh.

MMOFPS like Warrock, America's Army, GunZ, etc, tend to lag on older machines (I'm not saying all do though) and it gets boring after awhile, so I don't like any of em'.  :-\
