American McGee's Alice
« on: October 16, 2008, 10:31:31 pm »
Hey ppl, wondered if you ever heard about this game. It's called American McGee's Alice (basically just called "Alice"). I absolutely just love this game, such a wonderful, creepy game with one of those interesting storylines and scripts that draws you in, and it's based on a modified version of a modified Q3 egnine ( ::)). I'm here to give you an insight on the game, hopefully you'll be interested to get the game (*coughtorrentcough*).

*Developers and moderators stares at Hendrich disapprovingly*

What? Oh comon, don't look at me like that, this game is old and it is hard to find. You'll be lucky to get the retail version of the game, maybe you could even get it at E-bay, but still. Anyhow, heres a basic story plot from Wikipedia:

Quote
Shortly after her second adventure, Alice's house is burned down by a fire, killing her parents, and leaving her as the only survivor. Because of the guilt, she tries to commit suicide (bandages can be seen on her wrists), and becomes catatonic. She is institutionalised in Rutledge Asylum. Years later, the White Rabbit summons Alice to aid a radically altered Wonderland, now under the despotic rule of the Queen of Hearts. The Cheshire Cat in particular now looks very different from Sir John Tenniel's original illustration: he is shown here as skeletally thin and his grin looks more devious than mischievous. When he first appears in the game, Alice comments, "You've gone quite mangy, cat, but your grin's a comfort." The cat serves as Alice's constant companion throughout the game, frequently appearing to guide her.

Heres the full Wiki on the game:

Heres a Trailer for the game:

And the extended version of the opening for the game:

A music video that has some footage of the in-game fighting, I like it, if you don't like the music the Youtube user made, stfu.  ;D

Double-modified Q3, eh? I'd like to see that.

I remember that game very vividly - it was like one giant acid trip and interesting to play IMO.  For whatever reason, I never got to completing it.  I recall getting as far as the White Rabbit's encounter with the giant and then some.  I know exactly where my disc is too, and now I want to play it again when I should instead finish making a few missions in Flashpoint for Co-Op Saturday.  Jerk.

Welcome to a lot of years ago. American McGee's Alice was, together with Heavy Metal FAKK 2, the second generation of Quake games that proved 3rd person gaming can be awesome.

The first generation was Heretic II.

PS: Both Alice and FAKK make use of Ritual's UberTools, which where also used for Medal of Honour: Allied Assault.

The Fakk2 engine was a modified version of the Q3 engine. The engine used in Alice used a modified Fakk2 engine so it could mainly support characters talking, lip-syncing, in-game cut-scene style animation and a bunch of other bells and whistles. I'm pretty sure that engine still belongs to EA, so Tremulous will never get to use it.  :'(

What? Think about it, that engine is a whole lot better then using the Ogre engine or the Source crap people used to talk about in General Discussion. Besides, using that engine if all ready possible but easier for modders to create cut scenes for Tremulous.

Anyways, back to Alice. Has anyone actually finished that game? 'Cause I sure didn't. :P

Heavy Metal FAKK 2 supports lipsync, cutscenes and all the crap Alice supports too. The only difference I have spotted is the newbie 'feet' indicator that is a part of Alice's jumping system.

Even more so, the first map in Alice, Drolevel's Gas Extraction, is created by a famous mapper whose name is spelled backwards as Drolevel.

I haven't thought about that game in a while. Note to Hendrich: I've found that the History of Quake-based Games is an area of expertise Lava excels in. I was googling to see if perhaps there was a free version, and I see that they may be making it into a movie. I did not know that.

I will keep that as a mental note!  ;D Showoff, I'll show him who knows what, I'll make my own Q3 game and see how much he'll know. It'll have hookers, and drinks, and cats! You know what? Screw the cats and the drinks and the game itself! I'll just kill him instead!

Yes, the rumors stated that a Alice movie directed by Tim Burton might pop up, but recently an interview with McGee (Or whoever the hell represented the movie) said that it wasn't going to happen. So too bad... :'(

They were thinking of releasing the remake of the game with the movie. Alice was so Tim Burton's movie...

Btw, glad to have you back again! The other trolls in the forums weren't working so well...

Sorry for distracting you from your pressing discussion of this eight year old game. After this, start a thread about how great Rune was, willya?

Rune was a neat game, but waaaaaay to fucking repetitive. Come to think of it, it comes as no surprise that Rune suffers from the same disease as Prey; too little 'body' to make the game better than good.

And while we are talking about 3rd person games, Heretic II still is one of the best ever created.

Thief II: The Metal Age might be, by far, the best stealth-game ever created, I prefer that other game created using the Dark engine:

Yes, great game. I was actually considering to replay it with the SHTUP patch. Has anybody here tried this ?

Ooh, did another play-through of that not long ago after fishing through my older CDs.  I had to dick around a little to fix a glitch first, but I had a blast again afterward.  It's the only horror game I've played so far where I'm genuinely freaked out, largely because of the sounds they put together.  Very fun game.  The multiplayer co-op wasn't that bad either once my buddy figured how to properly start it.  MP games are strictly stuck on Hard so it's still challenging, especially 'cause you have to share ammo when it's already scarce.  ;D

I remember trying that myself but the game began crashing on startup afterward, and I triple-checked the instructions to no avail.  So yeah, I fail hard and can't tell you.

@gimheal: The Shock Texture Upgrade Project must be one of the most faithful retexturing projects in existence. In other words, highly recommended. The same can certainly not be said for the System Shock 2 remodelling project, which basically is dead anyhow.

@Steely Ann: http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,392.0.html

Your crash is most likely related to Direct3D not properly reporting the amount of texture memory on your videocard. This is a well-known Dark engine bug. Kolya's SS2Tool has the option to 'fix' it for you.
If you feel savvy, opening one of the .cfg files in the SS2 root (probably dark.cfg or something), searching for the string safe_texture_manager and (I don't exactly remember) either uncommenting or commenting the line it's on, should fix your problem.

How goos is Prey? I'm thinking of getting the collector's box because that game just looks plain crazy.
