Quote from: Tremacious DThe mission is clear,
I'm going over there
I'm going to pwn their base.

I flip around the corner,
cute as a grangar
And then I- oh noo! A tesla

Stay back here,
devise a plan
Dive into the barricades

Against all pr0s
Grangarise,
storm the base!
storm the base!

Grangar style,
spitspam (storm the base!)
Tesla wall,
Spit that shit (storm the base)
Spit into that mother-fucker
Now I'm spitting up
up on the reactor
I got mara-like reflexes

Against all the pr0s
Grangarise,
oh! storm the base!

Two air-vents to the base,
thats what the dretch was talkin a- Shit!

Electric Eye
Grangarise,
storm the base!
storm the base!
storm the base!

IMHO, trem needs a new release right now. Nothing hard, just collect things already done. TJW keys, menu fixes, maybe starting from a more recent backport. Apply some bugfix patches.
Do a good insteller and call that 1.1.1 official version. Update the link in the homepage and post a news entry.
This will bring in a lot of fresh air without write a single line of code.
Only ater that think about gameplay/graphic mods for a new shiny 1.2 version.

The main problem is that a lot of players feels that is dead, no new releases, no updates, bring up a consistent server is a pain and for start playing seriusly you need to install the game, download an updated client, fix config by hand... too hard for a lot of people. And a lot of people is still doing it.

I've already made an install package for new players here.  I know you want an official installer, but I don't see what the difference is.  Word of mouth is how anything becomes known (just in different forms sometimes), so I think it'd be just as effective if people who talk about Tremulous would direct new players to user-made install packages.

I don't think that's the case, or else no one would play anymore at all.  If all existing Tremulous players would get their friends to play Tremulous and keep in close contact with them, and then those new players did the same, the Tremulous community would grow, just like any other game.

ops, right i took a bit a necro thread, there is a new one somewhere else.
Btw, i know a lot of past active players that has gone away saying "call me when something new comes by. Couse the game feel a quite dead now and i'm bored".
I also think that a new player will download the client  from the tremulous.net homepage and they will never discover the client posted into the forum.

How exactly are they going to even know Tremulous exists without being told?  Advertisement is how people learn of things.  If the people advertising (regular people through word of mouth) would just point them to a special download, then it'll be just as if it was on the main site.  Also, the people that quit just because the game hasn't seen further development are very shallow because they should keep playing a game if it's fun, not if it's new and shiny.

I guess one thing what makes Tremulous less popular is the fact that Server List is 'Local' by default...

This is what I agree totally. Bugfixes & all, just no gameplay changes. There are many many players lurking without a new client and it's cool new features. This would benefit a lot.

1.2 reminds me a lot of Duke Nukem Forever.

Ehh, all trem needs to Stay Alive is a devoted playerbase. ANYONE can contribute to that. It's not perfect, but it's not like the game isn't enjoyable as it is. And if you like trem and you've got some skills that could be put to use (mapping, programming, modeling etc.) then what the heck are you waiting for? Help out a bit!

You know, I think someone needs to start spreading the word about trem and attract some new players. Start bookmarking the site on del.icio.us, reddit it, digg it, whatever.

Aren't people already doing what you've suggested?

The answer is simple: About 2 years ago there was about 700~ players online on the afternoons.

Now it's about 300-200 - Why?

1.) No updates - game gets boring.
2.) No advertisements.
3.) No tutorial mode. [Tremulous was my first fpp for example]

And the number of players is all the time getting lower.

No autodownload.
Broken sort by ping/anything.
Default set to "LAN", default not refreshing the server list.

We do have a very rudimentary "tutorial mode", but apparently some people aren't even able to read text in homoeopathic doses and fail at aquiring knowledge that way.
