I think that once this gets off the ground people could mentor other people 1 on 1.  What has been directly suggested is nice and all, but i think 1 on 1 would be better in some cases.  For example: If I play alien and you see that I suck,  have I just not gotten enough experience with alien, or do I just plain suck?

I think 1 on 1 would also encourage greater communication and understanding as the mentor gets to know what exactly the mentee needs help with.

This could be an informal thing, like in a forum:
A: I need tutoring with alien.
B: I can help. What time?
etc...

Or we could make something more complex if we get a web server or something set up.  That part isn't my say.

A recent post by tuple reminded me of what I was thinking when I started this post. (A couple minute difference from when I finished it)

Building.  Most people don't get a chance to learn how to build effectively because if they screw up, it really affects the whole team.  I personally don't know how to build except for what I have seen.  When am I ever going to start building with all these legendary builders out there.  I think tutoring on building would give many more people the confidence to start building.

P.S. I realized after a while that my post didn't seem to convey what I had to say, but just couldn't quite place it.

EDIT: I vouch for tuple.  Saw him play.  Seems good.

Well.. something I've actually intended is to end up writing a few massive comprehensive strategy guides on things like this. A noob (get in and do it decent), and a vet (get more in depth) guide for several things with the help of anyone that is willing. I'm hoping once the site is up (... ;) look here for news soon), that }MG{ will be able to do a lot of things like that and take a really active and positive role in the tremulous community.

I think it might be neat if we have scheduled times when we get a private server for particular things. Such as anyone who wants to work on building we can play a few building centric matches, and either vets could watch and try to coach, or the other team could give constructive criticisms of your defense.
Such as one round both teams are given time to try to set up the best base they can at each level and they then throw a worst case scenario at their enemy (1 side attacks and the other sits back), and they see how what they did worked.. and then they try to improve that and see if they can make it work in an actuall both sides attacking atmosphere.....
We need building experts, and mass driver experts, and admins and all kinds of people.. so if you see someone who knows something you want to learn, encourage them to join if they seem like the right kind of person.

Where are all the }MG{ members(/recruits) from actually?
And on what servers do you guys play?

I live in Belgium and i play on Napkins server, the DB@ servers (not that frequent anymore) and that Ludo server..

Been playing on the LA server the last couple days, SST too.  AKKA when I wanna get my butt kicked ;-)

newb question here.  Whats the protocol to putting }MGR{ before a name?  And yes, I can be that retentive! :-)  I would do so, but I don't want to be presumptuous.

I watched John Bristow play, he was a solid player.  I don't recall if he had high kills (I don't typically value that) but he was within the first 3, and I saw him run from arm with nothing but a rifle to defend base (which is sometimes necessary).  He went back to rearm, but I liked the team support and it was necessary at the time.  With that, I think I can vouch for his abilities and his commitment to winning as a team.

I'd like to join MG but I have no idea if anyone's seen me play

I'm a good alien, okay alien builder, okay hummie (I do rock with the shotty though), and a horrible hummie builder.

I'd be willing to teach as well as learn as much as possible.
I have a short temper on large servers so I avoid them, and have given hints and playing tips to a lot of new people out there.

I go by [NEX] Phreak in game. Quite often I can be found on the KillaZ server, or AKKA late at night whne it's half empty (I get great ping on AKKA)

Never been kicked/banned from any server with the exception of AKKA's auto bot for repairing the reactor...go figure.
Yelling at team mates since 2006!

@ Tuple
I saw bristow playing as well.. maybe the same time you did..

What do you mean by protocol?
I put some stuff at the bottom of the post the other day.... that might answer your question... if you want to be in }MG{ you can put the }MGR{ tag in front of your name. Its to let other people know to watch you, and sometimes people want to join, and post in the forum but noone has read it yet, so it lets them know in game instead of having to keep the list of people in the thread handy.

Only people that can't wear the }MGR{ tag are people who don't want to be in }MG{ and any people that were denied membership because they were a griefer or did something to lead them to be kicked out.
}MG{ tag is for you when your name turns green in the list (3 recs.. or more).. hope it doesn't clash with your rainbow name... nice colors :)

@phreak
... i think i've seen you around... but its been while, i'd want to make sure it was you.. probably run into you again soon since i'm trying to play servers where people need recs.

I'm in Georgia USA for now.. 99% of the time my net is pretty fast and I get a decent low ping most places, but sometimes (like yesterday for all of you who saw me lagging around.. i hope that doesn't become the norm) it just gets really crappy.. but geographically server-wise my ping is usually fine anywhere.

ALSO... if anyone who is already in mg, or is close to getting all of their recs wants to play on the ladder, say so. Some interest has already been shown.  I can set up teams for us, but while i'm working on the site etc feel free to organize yourselves if you want to try it out, and let me know.. I suggest you organize a little bit of practice/teamwork before you start challenging people though..
Unfortunately dolby gave away all of his servers already, but i'll still work on getting us our own server for practice... if anyone wants to get one for us, or set up a temp one let us know!

I want to play in the ladder!
I wanted to suggest it a long time ago, but there didn't seem to be any interest :D
But first, i'd like to play a bit around with you guys, in a league, it's going to be harder then on Pubs :)

Does anyone here know what it take to have a server?  System requirements?  Connection requirements?

Cause I have a decent connection and some extra computers lying around.  Some of them might be good enough to be a server.

I would love to join.....I am a pretty good player, and in a normal match as human I can get 20+ kills, usually in the top five. I have a little difficulty as aliens, but I am getting used to them. Ummmmm....ask anyone on the AKKA server, and they'll tell you I am not a complete asshole. I did accidently charge a lucy once for too long and blew up half the base. It was my first time with a lucy cannon. Other than that, I am a good player. In a BS and with a chaingun, I can take down three-four tyrants without dying, more if I am lucky.

I recommend JohnBristow. By the way this is POOPTURTLE. :) He is not an asshole, like he says. I was just on AKKA with him. He'd make a good clan member. :D

(This is our personal opnion)

    * Linux kernel version 2.2.9 or above, glibc-2.1
    * Pentium II 266MHz processor or above
    * 64 to 128 MB of ram (depending on what type of server load you expect)
    * 500 MB of HD space (for maps and skins, etc.)
    * Dedicated internet connection (such as Cable, DSL, or T1) both Downstream and upstream should be a decent connection

For Tremulous, i would say this times 2 since the maps are bigger and it will use a bit more load overall i think..

Well I guess the dedicated connection part is a bit of a problem.  Other than that I have a spare computer lying around that would almost fit the bill.  (450 PIII, 192 RAM, 10GB HD. About half way between the quoted and that doubled.)  But if this is just a small private server and only for specified times, I don't see why I couldn't help.  I think my connection is about 3MBits, but its a cable connection and you all know about those.

Congrats to tuple.

Miki, i've seen bill gates in the player list now and again.. its hard to know if thats you or not and last time I saw you I asked and then the map switched.. *sigh*... so you probably didn't see.. and then you were gone.
If you see me connect let me know its you, or put the MGR tag on your name.. i'll try to ask.. chances are i'll run into you again soon.

I've put up a test server that is in the server list as "}MG{ Clan"

It shows up at the very bottom of the server list for me.  The server is located in Chicago, IL.

We should consider this a load test to see how well it does.  It's running on a PII 550 with about 900MB of RAM, so I'm curious to see if it survives.

I've put a whole bunch of maps on it (which I've listed below) but just the standards are in rotation.

I've used TJW's binary, so we'll have a little extra admin contol over it.  If I see any members on, I'll add you as admins.  Also, it has 4 reserved spots, with 14 total.  I haven't messed with any of the defaults,  so build points are default, etc.  Never having been a game server admin before, please bear with me as I figure out what the hell I need to do to get this working smoothly :-D

If you hear of any new or updated maps out there, let me know and I'll put them on.

If for any reason you can't see it in your server list, it's at 66.92.134.200.

Let me know how it works!

for a semi solid server u need

512mb ram(u rly need a gb)
1500mhz
Preferably Linux for a server.

at least a 4mb Upload. you really need a 10mb for a clean connection but taht depends on how many players are there going to be?

I fear my network connection will be nowhere near sufficient, but I guess we'll see.

Hmm, 1GB of RAM?  I'm pretty close with +900MB
1500mhz, ok, now I'm a little depressed ;-P
It's on Ubuntu Linux, I expected that to be good anyways.
4MB upload?  I'm too embarassed to tell you what it really is!  Maybe time for me to upgrade my connection.  Speakeasy has a very good network though, so we'll see.

Presently has 3 users - pings between 70 and 110
load average: 0.24, 0.17, 0.10
CPU hangs around 15 with spikes to 26.

I vouch for TriggerHappy, he has lots of skills. Once he joined late in the game on ATCS, and although he couldn't do much vs the goons and tyrants, he took out all the dretches hiding in those rooms along the side of the walls. And then next game he kicked butt and got to 1st place.
