The Computers We Use
« on: November 09, 2010, 06:48:00 am »
Ohai Community.

Out of curiosity, i want to be nosy and ask:
What sort of computer are you using (PC/MAC | Self-Built/Brand Named | Laptop/Desktop etc...)
and would you post your system specifications on here too (CPU/Mobo/RAM/HDD's/Screens? etc... | overclocked or not?)
no stone goes unturned.

I am just curious about your computing preferences, perhaps a pattern will emerge? or maybe it will be quite varied?
Don't you mind to tell me what you nickname meens, cause in my vocabulary there is only anon and a moose ???

I've been playing with a consumer PC I've had for a few years. I've gradually updated parts of it manually, and since I don't play anymore, its specs aren't classified.

     AMD Athlon 64 FX 3800 (~2.4GHz single-core)
     1 GB crucial memory
     250 GB 7200rpm HDD
     ATi Radeon 4650 x512
     22" widescreen HD monitor
     Noise-cancelling headphones

And I kicked ass on that thing. Wheeee
I've had linux and windows OS's on it. Trem always ran better under linux, once all dependencies were sorted out. I finished on windows, since, being a gamer, linux was a bad choice for that purpose.

well atm i got 3

my Main pc
CPU: Athlon 64 x2 6000+
Ram: 2GB DDR2 ram
GFX: GF9600GT
HDD: 200Gb HDD
Monitor: 17" LCD
Keyboard+Mouse:  G15 Keyboard G9 mouse
OS: slackware64 13.1

PC for my nephew i been making(hes still a lil young to use it maybe when hes 2)
CPU: Athlon 64 x2 (cant remember less then 6000)+
Ram: 2GB DDR2 ram
GFX: GF9600GT
HDD: 1Tb HDD
Monitor: 15" LCD
Keyboard+Mouse:  IBM keyboard cheap mouse
OS: slackware64 13.1

and finally my mediacenter
CPU: core 2 duo 3.0ghz
Ram: 2GB DDR3 ram
GFX: GF7600GT passive cooled
HDD: 2 x 1Tb HDD both full
Monitor: 28" LCD
Keyboard+Mouse:  IBM keyboard + capture card remote
TV Tuner: leadtek DTV2000h(Great Card)
OS: slackware64 13.1 with mythtv trunk

i have been thinking of changing the media center to an atom for lower power consumption but i don't think it will have enough power maybe an AMD but they all have ATI cards onboard and ATI and Linux don't mix(and i hear their video coding is a pile) atm im leaning towards the new "sandy bridge" chips coming out next year with onboard Intel Graphics not as low power as an atom(wich afaik is like 10TDP or something) but at 35w TDP should be ok and have enough power for a combo FE/BE mythtv setup and if needed software decoding(not sure how good VA-API is)

Both taiyo's and face's builds are pretty neat, i must say.

Those SSDs for / and swap purposes sound nice, but at the moment i'd be more inclined to just stick some more ram in for the money, I shall experiment with a cheap SATA>SD or CF adaptor at some point though :p.

Well laptops are small closed cases so it should be expected. My GeForce 7400 overheats when I play tremulous.

I find that if you elevate it with, say, a small piece of wood on either side to allow air to flow underneath, you'll prolong the time before overheating. It is inevitable, though. There's no way to properly cool a laptop.

Yeah I've been doing that and I'm also just starting to consider the fact that the area where I feel to check for heat is the heatsink so it might just be the fact that it's the heatsink. And Faes I was considering buying one of those but currently all of my money is going towards my new computer and a non crt monitor :)

How long have you had it? perhaps it might pay off to re-apply some better thermal compound on it? the thermal grease/pads that are on them straight out of the manufacturers are pretty low quality (in most cases)

I used to have this large iron stove in my previous apartment. I didn't use it for heating
but it was an awesome laptop heatsink.

Well I know it definitely needs a new fan. The current one makes a bunch of grinding noises because my little cousin put a paperclip in it while it was running and I had to go in and pull it out and it hasn't worked right since.
