Quality testing for 1.2 sounds
« on: June 24, 2011, 03:53:41 pm »
Hi guys, as you might have noticed, we have put together all the new sounds for 1.2 already. F50 has checked out the sounds from the SVN and added the rest, meaning you can test out the new sounds on his Brindus server. I'd like to have the sounds tested for quality, since not all of them are consistent or good, so I set up a wiki at http://tremsound.wikia.com. You can locate the sounds by following the links as they appear in the pk3 file and then adding a comment on the page. There are already a few samples on the wiki. Helpful comments would be like "The sound is too soft, make it louder" or "here is a link to a sound I think is better and why." Comments like "this sound is crap" don't help at all. Since sounds can get changed or added, make sure you reference which sound you are commenting on. There are a lot of sounds on there, but the ones that get comments are the only ones possibly getting changed.

First impressions? Some of the sounds are actually better than the original (or at least refreshingly new). The granger sounds on the other hand I'm afraid pales in comparison to the old granger sounds, as well as in comparison to any sounds that aren't some guy saying 'waffle' with said waffle in his face.

^^^Isn't that the flamer sound?^^^

Also, i think the old alien sounds are fine. I'd go insane if we lose the granger. The new one is a retarded guy going oiahahaha into a crap microphone. Can the devs pls release a gpp sounds mod for the public to vote on the new sounds?

The bsuit taunt is retarded. Sounds like the first one except translated an octave lower (for those non-musicians, think of the sound difference between the first two notes in the heartbeat/main title theme of tremulous.)

The mg turret is a door slam.

The only thing i like about the new sounds is the new reactor attack1.wav sound, as the previous never played, and if you listen to it it is actually more a machinegun turret than a electric zap.

It's not a question of whether the old sounds are fine. We've been over this a million times. They can't be used due to licensing problems. We need new sounds, and we need them to not suck. Can anyone do a half-decent gurgle? (I can't, as you all know.)

ok, can you give me the tool thingy app that can code?

Hey, I'm actually fairly partial to your gurgle.

I'm not. It was worth a shot anyway, given that the replacement we had before was even worse, but still.

Most pain and death sounds for humans and aliens are either very quite or just don't have *that* feeling - for example the rant death sounds don't have that good old feeling where the rant got shot to death and it's yell of pain really showed the tyrant is dead.

Alienevolve.wav is vey nice tho, I like it, just could be a half-second longer.

All granger sounds are just plainly retarded... literally...

Basi taunt sound is too short. Grab sound is very nice tho. Jump sound is quite acceptable too. Pain and death sounds are as mentioned above.

Dragoon jump sound is more like a pain sound or something like that, however as it is also the pounce sound it's fine. The pain sounds are somewhat good. Taunt sound also gives that alien growl effect, which is good.

Dretch death and pain sounds are suprisingly very good. Taunt sound is also very good. Jump sound is also very good. I have a feeling dretch has the best sound pack from all the aliens.

Marauder death sounds sound something like a headcrab from Half-life and Alien from Aliens vs Predator series... not very good - it doesn't fit the marauder. Jump sound is fine. Pain and taunt sounds are same as death sounds.

Didn't check any footstep sound - I'm quite much done for todays reviewing.
